I have an Aunt and Uncle who were cremated and their ashes are in an urn in a space at Riverview Abbey. It is a big place, they have several floors of mausoleum, a crematorium, and a funeral home all in one place. I live in Keizer, Oregon near Salem, Or. If you don't hear from anyone that lives in the Portland area, let me know, and the next time I am in that area, I will see what I would find out for you. This appeared in The Dalles Chronicle, September 30, 2001. It is a paid advertisemnet. Meet Geneva McNicholl, our oldest resident and the oldest Oregonian. At 111 years old, Geneva McNicholl may be the oldest Oregonian alive. Geneva was born in Lafayette (Oregon) near McMinneville on December 10, 1889. She can remeber times before the automobile, refrigeration, and the world war (World War I). In 1929, Geneva, her son Bob Rogers and her second husband built a store in Washington, on the Little White Salmon River. Geneva retired from the store in 1966 at the age of 76, handing down the business to her son. She continued to garden and cook meals until the age of 104. After a decline in her health, Geneva moved to a care home and then she joined us here at Columbia Basin Care Center (The Dalles). That was seven years ago. The Dalles Chronicle November 11, 2001 21 Years Ago, November 11, 1980 Wendy McDermid, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don McDermid of Wasco (Oregon), has recently been pledged into the Theta Mu Chapter of Delta Delta Delta at Oregon State University. (Chronicle Editor note: The file for the last quarter of 1981 has turned up missing, so the year differs on segment of Looking Back.) 40 Years Ago, November 11, 1961 Placing of a wreath on the placid Columbia (River) at the Port Dock climaxed Veterans Day observances here this morning. At the conclusion of a ceremony on the dock, Charles McCubbin of American Legion Post 19, The Dalles, tossed the wreath from the east end of the dock. The ceremony followed a long procession through downtown streets with bands, marching units, veterans groups and others giving The Dalles its first Veterans Parade in many years. A capacity crowd attend The Dalles Art Club art auction held her last night at Civic Auditorium. Forty works were auctioned by Frank Coombs, auctioneer, and also sold were lower priced pictures which were not auctioned. Phil Tyler of Hood River (Oregon) donated a picture to the club for the auction. A picture by Roscoe Sexton brought the highest price, selling at a figure slightly over $21. 60 Years Ago, November 11, 1941 Jack Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Leland Brown of this city, has been selected to play in the University of Oregon rally band, according to word received in this office from John Stehm, assistant professor in the university school of music and director of bands. Stopping at the port of The Dalles oil docks to take on gasoline, three Portland yachts arrived at 9 a.m. this morning on a cruise to Pasco, Washington. The boats are the Relax, L.R. Hussa, owner and skipper; Evening Star, Milton Henderson, owner and skipper; and Patricia, Commodore Vernon Cartwright, owner and skipper. 100 years Ago, November 11, 1901 Last Friday one of the wagons loaded with part of the armature for the power plant of the Wasco Milling Company, en route to the White River falls, upset in Long Hollow, about 15 miles from The Dalles. The massive machine, which weighs about 9000 pounds, slid down an embankment of about 30 feet and was injured to some extent by having some of the castings broken; not so seriously, however, but what it can be used and the accident will not delay the company in furnishing light and power at the appointed time. The W.C.T.U. will hold a temperance meeting at the Christian church on Wednesday evening at 7:30. The Reverend Walton Skipworth will deliver an address and a paper will be presented by a member of the local union. They hope to have a good lively singing and a big crowd of the friends of social and moral improvement. Just as I gave up, I got the information I needed. Thank you so much Anne. This will go in the mail Tuesday morning. I've found Oregon to be one of the more helpful states, and am sure glad most of the ancestors were from that beautiful state. Shirley Patterson
Thanks to all who responded to my query about the cost of obtaining a marriage certificate from Jackson County. I did check with the Oregon Archives first. They've given me a fantastic amount of help in the past, but I received a reply from them that I would have to contact Jackson County for the copy of this certificate. I guess I'll have to write to Jackson County. I was hoping to speed things up a little bit. I've been working on Charles Hollingsworth for 2 years without much luck. Thanks again everyone. Shirley HOLLINGSWORTH, PALMER, KIMBALL, BRADBURY, LITHERLAND, ABREY.
If the marriage or death certificate are within the legal years for Oregon, they are much cheaper through the Oregon Archives.
