    3. I didn't find them in the Oregon Death Index, which is available online at Ancestry.com, of which I am a member. (Their database goes through 1998.) But I did find Ruth Kuenzi on the Social Security Death Index: ss # 539-26-0234 b. 27 Feb 1900 d. August 1979 last benefit: Seattle, King County, WA 98107 Hope this helps. 1. [OREGON] My Casner Family
    2. Elizabeth Freeman
    3. This will probably will be one of my last posts during 2001. My CASNER family made it's way to Linn Co., OR in 1852 where many of them married before migrating to other places. Most of them 'struck it rich' in the mines in CA and returned to OR. In 1875 about half of them migrated to other places. Jincy Jane (Fields) Casner was the mother of all these children. Her husband, Henry Casner, died in 1847 in IA leaving her with all these children. In 1852 she migrates to Linn Co., OR where she obtains a donation land claim. She dies in 1884 in AZ. (1) John L. Casner (b1822); his wife dies in 1852 on the OR trail leaving him with two infant sons; he dies circa 1900 in TX. (2) Frank Casner (b1823) dies in CA circa 1898 in Kern Co., CA; little is known of him. (3) Benjamin Casner (b1824); he is mentioned in information out of IA and is on one census in OR; still searching for where he dies. (4) William 'Bill' Casner (b1825) never marries; may have been an outlaw in IA and NE; strikes it rich in the CA mines; takes a herf of sheep to TX where he is murdered in 1877 in west TX (5) Ebenezer Casner (b1827) is identified in information out of IA where he was in trouble with the army and the law; still searching for what became of him. (6) Jonas 'James' Carsner (b1827) died 1864 Linn Co., OR; marries in Polk Co., IA; migrates to OR in 1862; dies in OR in 1864. (7) David Casner (b1832) mines in Butte County in 1860; last record found of him there. (8) Andrew Jackson Carsner (b1836) marries in OR; has 13 children; dies in 1890 OR/WA; left many descendants. (9) Daniel 'Dan' Casner (b1837) his life is much the same as that of William 'Bill' Casner; is murdered in west TX in 1877. (10) Moses Casner (b1837) migrates to AZ in 1875 from OR; also struck it rich in the mines in CA; was a miser; married twice; dies in early 1900s in AZ. (11) Nancy Jane Casner (b1839) married Harvey Fields; she died in OR; descendants remain in OR to this date. (12) James 'Jim' A. Casner/Carsner (b1839) marries twice in OR; have yet to find where he dies; have found no children for him. (13) Henry Casner (b1840) is on 1860 census in Linn Co., OR living in the home of his mother; unknown what became of him. (14) Riley Casner (b1843)marries twice; first wife dies; he migrates to AZ in 1875 taking his mother with him; he died in 1900s in AZ; left many descendants. Those that remained in OR for the most part spelled the name CARSNER. Those that migrated on to elsewhere retained the spelling Casner. Would like to hear from other Casner descendants/researchers who could shed some light on anyone in this very large family. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

    3. 21 Years Ago, December 23, 1981 The world's largest wind turbine genearator has produced its first electricity, Bonnevill Power Administrator Sterling Munro announced Monday night. Munro said the windmill at the Goodnoe Hills site near Goldendale (Washington) was activated at 8:30 p.m. and continued to operate for 11 minutes. He said right now the windmill is producing only a small fraction of what it is capable of because it is being tested to ensure everything is working properly. He said the tests would continue for about 60 days. Noble Harold Woolsey, representing Al Kader Temple, installed new officers for 1981 for the Mid-Columbia Shrine club during a Ladies night dinner at the Shamrock Cafe on December 12. Installed were Dr. Wally Wolf, president; Jack Pifher, first vice president; John Frizzell, second vice president; George Specht, secretary, and Bob Wagenblast, treasurer. (Chronicle Editor note: The file for the last quarter of 1981 has turned up missing, so the year differs on segment of Looking Back.) 40 Years Ago, December 23, 1961 The Celilo Bowmen, local archery club, elected new officers this week and announced plans for development of an indoor range for the winter season. The new president is Bob Loftin. Other officers are Marvin Zade, vice president; Ruth Loftin, secretary; Marge Franklin, treasurer; Mearl Miles and Darrel Franklin, one-year and two-year handicap officers, respectively; Marilyn Young and Ray Ralph, board members; Merle Davis and Jack Geer, publicity; and Harold Franklin, field captain. Details for the plans for the indoor range will be announced later. A reception honoring the Reverend James M. Brown and Mrs. Brown will be held the evening of December 28 at Gateway Presbyterian Church. Reverend Brown and his family will be leaving The Dalles in January to accept a call to the First Presbyterian Church in Portland. 60 Years Ago, December 23, 1941 "With the possible exception of Klamath County, it is my opinion that Wasco County has one of Oregon's best defense organizations now in existence east of the Cascades," T. Tracy Barton, county coordinator, told members of this section's defense council at a regular meeting held yesterday in city hall. Barton recently attended a state wide meeting of county defense coordinators at Salem (Oregon). 100 Years Ago, December 23, 1901. Harry J. Dunn, of Goldendale (Washington), this morning concluded a bargain with C.J. Stubling for his retail store and fixtures, the conditions of the sale being that Mr. Dunn will take possession sometime between the first of January and the first of February. After Mr. Dunn takes possession, Mr. Stubling will devote his entire attention to the wholesale business. The voting at the Catholic fair for the most popular young lady resulted in a victory for Miss Annie O'Brien. The voters also declared that Mr. J.A. McArthur was the most popular elk, that the Elks were the most popular fraternal order and that Mr. J.S. Fish owned the best horse on the footstool, or words to that effect. The voters decided that Senator Williamson was the most popular man in Wasco County and the vote gave him a handsome crayon, which the senator generously presented to the gentleman whose vote was next to his. 1. [OREGON] Secret Santa of The Dalles Reveals Identity
    2. Pete Wasser
    3. I hope some of you will indulge me and read this. It is a pre-obituary. Jim Ellett Hopes Gifts Will Carry On The Dalles Chronicle (AP) December 20, 2001 A man who has spent decades playing secret Santa to low income children here is finally going public in the hope of finding others to carry on his work after he dies. This year, Santa's helpers have chosen about 800 gifts that will go to more than 600 children. The Santa who pays the bill - often reaching $15,000 to $20,000 a year - keeps out of the limelight and those who help him have guarded his identity. Those helpers think it's now time people know who the secret Santa is, because this may be his last Christmas. Jim Ellett is dying from a progressive lung disease. In Ellet's style of giving, the young beneficiaries never know their Christmas presents are different. Ellett, 68, grew up in poverty and hated the public giveaways that made him feel ashamed of being poor. His father supported his mother and their five children on a slim disability check for mustard gas injuries suffered in World War I. "We were never hungry, and we had a lot of love," Ellett said. He remembers Christmas charity he got as a kid: hand-me-down toys and an orange, presented in a packed auditorium. "It was so humilitating," he said. "I don't think it was right to rub your nose in it. They never meant it that way, but that's the way it worked out." He and his wife, Loretta, quietly began their giving tradition three decades ago, using profits from Ellett Construction Co., to create a gift exchange in which givers and recipients would feel no shame. The Elletts' started helping parents of limited means buy new items for their children. First, it was clothing gift certificates. Then toys, relayed through the Salvation Army. Helen Madsen, a friend of Ellett's and a member of the Salvation Army board, has followed the progress of the gift-giving program since the late 1970s. She estimates the combined value of gift purchases over the years easily could exceed $400,000. "Truthfully, we couldn't have done as much for the children without his help," she said. "We were able to give them three real nice gifts, plus stocking stuffers." On Saturday the Salvation Army will set up a makeshift store at a local shopping center. Parents may come in and select toys. "We give them to the parents and say, "You go home and wrap it and say it's from whomever," said Capt. Sabrina Tumey of the Salvation Army. Ellett is visibly embarrassed when it comes to talking about the details. To him, the project isn't about public praise. It's about creating stronger bonds between children and their parents. "The kids have to think better of their parents when they think the parents got the gifts for them," Ellett said. "It gives them pride, and it gives the parents pride." Ellett's grandchildren help select the gifts. The shopping teaches the children that people should give without expecting a pat on the back, he says. "I think the good Lord meant for you to help other people," he said. "Mayber it hasn't helped as much as I think, but I think it's helped a lot of kids through some tough times." Merry Christmas All!
