    1. [OREGON] October 11th, 1582
    2. Jim Schira
    3. The interesting thing about October 11th, 1582, is that it never happened. In 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII reworked the calendar, Thursday October 4th, 1582 was followed by Friday, October 15th, 1582. Not only that, but the New Year was moved from March 25th to January 1st. Most countries, including the U.S. were using the Julian calendar. Not for another 200 years, would Gregory's calendar be in general usage in the U.S. For that reason, be apprised that anytime you see a date such as 1684/85, the person was born in 1684 under the Julian Calendar, but 1685 under our new Calendar. Plus, if born under the Julian Calendar, days need to be subtracted since days were lost when converting to the Gregorian. Back in the 1700's, many people didn't put birth dates on tombstones. One reason they didn't is because no one knew what calendar to use. Tombstone inscriptions were put with the deceased's death date, and having lived so many years, months and days. That is fortunate for us, for we can subtract those things, and arrive at the TRUE DATE OF BIRTH, which probably isn't the same date as registered in the family Bibles or church records. ===== With best wishes, Jim Schira __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 1. [OREGON] THERESA SMITH DOUGHERTY
    2. I am looking for any information on Theresa Josephine Smith (married name Dougherty). She was born Sept. 8, 1885 in South Dakota She may have married in 1909. She died Feb. 19, 1975 in Multnomah County, Oregon. I would like to get a copy of the obituary if at all possible. What I am trying to find is information on her family before her marriage. I have a copy of a photo taken by Thwaites Photo in Portland with a handwritten note on the back M. Schmitt (Smith), 410 Wash St., Portland. I believe the children in this family were: Theresa Josephine, Maria (Mollie) Gertrude, Sadie, and Frank Parents may have been John Henry and Maria (Mary).. I have been unable to locate any information in the census? Does anyone have any suggestions? I really would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks. Edel

Thank you! Josephine County was created in 1856. Grants Pass was right on the border between Jackson and Josephine County until 1885, when Josephine County gained area from Jackson County and Grants Pass ended up clearly in Josephine County. I think it is definitely worthwhile checking records in both counties during your time frame, unless someone with research experience can answer the question definitively. 1. [OREGON] January 2001 Spotlight: Travel The Bozeman Trail
    2. Elizabeth
    3. Hi Trail Fans Happy New Year! This year I'm hoping to feature just sites that are specific to a certain trail or portion of a trail in the West, starting with "Travel The Bozeman Trail." http://www.bozemantrail.org/index.htm The Bozeman Trail is unique among trails in the American West, cutting through the last and best hunting grounds of the Northern Plains Indians, and led to military occupation of the region, ultimately resulting in the Indian wars on the Northern Plains. This excellent website explores the history of the Bozeman Trail which overlaid ancient Paleo-Indian and buffalo routes. It was a microcosm of the history of the West, with about every kind of people who lived in, traveled through, or settled the West represented. Included are diary accounts, military reports, and first hand thoughts about the land and place surrounding the trail, from a Crow Scout for Custer to fieldnotes from a modern day exploratory expedition. This site also serves as a guide for the modern traveler of the trail, with museums listed (from south to north) along the trail, a Bozeman Trail Corridor map, events occurring along the trail in 2002, and a gallery of photos, both historic and modern. I hope that you'll all take the opportunity to explore this website. Lots of good up-to-date information, a nicely designed site which is easy to get around. Don't forget to visit previous Spotlights at: http://www.over-land.com/spotlite.html and also I welcome e-mail suggesting a future Spotlight. Liz
