    1. [OREGON] The Chisolm Trail
    2. Elizabeth
    3. Hi Trail Fans, The February, 2002 Spotlight of the Month is: "Along the Chisholm Trail." http://www.texhoma.net/~glencbr/p001.html Over the past century, the Chisholm Trail, named after Jesse Chisholm, has been all but forgotten. Millions of longhorns were driven northward across the Texas and Oklahoma plains to railheads in Kansas during the period 1867-1889, but now much of the trail has been plowed up or paved over. Houses and golf courses stand on it. Some of it is still open pasture; some of it has been plowed countless times to plant wheat, cotton or other agricultural products. Plowed fields and barbed wire, triumphant over the cattlemen a century ago, remain in control of the trails' passage through the region. Now a new movement is taking place to "revive" the old Chisholm Trail, not as it once was -- a trail to take cattle to market -- but as a tourist destination. This site has history of the trail, lots of maps, information about the river crossings, historic places, and current day photos all along the trail. It is apparent that the author of the website, who was born, raised, and still lives along the trail, has deep feelings about it..."and if you face into the wind and close your eyes and listen real hard, you might be able to hear the whistles and cries of the cowboys, and the complaints of the longhorns as they continue their long walk north." Hope you take the time to look at this site. And thanks to those of you who have suggested "Spotlights." Look at the previous Spotlights at: http://www.over-land.com/spotlite.html Thanks! 1. Re: [OREGON] Levi Mellon and descendants
    2. Hello Morley....... It is possible that the e-mail, with the attachment, that you got from Gail Petersen has a virus...... Last week I got 2 e-mails with attachments from Gail and my Norton Anti-Virus software caught it. If you don't have a "Anti-Virus" program, I strongly suggest that you get one..... And check for up-dates daily......... Look at her e-mail address..... check to see if there is a "Line" before her address..... if so, then that e-mail you received, and tried to open, has a virus..... DO NOT OPEN...... Some of the "New" types of viruses are written in such away that they can appear to be genealogy related...... I do know of Gail.... she lives up here in Washington and is active in the "Heritage Quest Research Library" located in Sumner, WA...... It's been awhile since I have been there (It's a 75 mile drive from my home) Janet ----- Original Message ----- From: "morley mellen" <m.mellen@sympatico.ca> To: <OREGON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 04, 2002 9:58 AM Subject: [OREGON] Levi Mellon and descendants | Out there somewhere is a lady named Gail Edwards-Petersen. | | She was kind enough to reply to my query about Levi MELLON but: | | a) there was no message | b) I cannot even save the attachment which she sent | c) her E-mail address is not valid. 1. [OREGON] Woman Dies in Traffic Accident
    2. Pete Wasser
    3. The Dalles Chronicle January 7, 2002 A Portland woman died on Saturday afternoon when the vehicle she was riding in slid broadside into the path of a pickup on Highway 35 at Milepost 64.29. Pronounced dead at the scene was Yvette Barhishindi Mubalama, 28. Oregon State Police said she was riding in a 1984 Toyota Tercel operated by Luvumbu Ndongala Hassan, 33, also of Portland. The Toyota was northbound when it skidded out of control on a curve and into the southbound lane, where it was hit by the 1998 Ford pickup operated by Darryl Brian Barton, 31, 1218 Tucker Road, Hood River. Hassan suffered head injuries in the crash and was taken to a Portland hospital by LifeFlight helicopter. Barton and his three passengers were all uninjured. Road conditions at the time of the accident, 12:25 p.m., were wet with patches of slush. The OSP said alcohol was not a factor in the crash. OSP troopers from The Dalles investigated the accident, assisted by OSP officers from Portland and Hood River county deputies. 1. [OREGON] Looking Back: A Glimpse Through the Chronicle's Files
    2. Pete Wasser
    3. The Dalles Chronicle February 3, 2002 Looking Back is compiled weekly by Elroy King of the Chronicle staff. 20 Years Ago, February 3, 1982 The appointment of a consultant to evaluate the present education program of districts 9 and 12 is the next step for the proposed reorganization of the districts. Following a 90 minute meeting here Tuesday night with the board members from the Wasco County Educational Service District, District 9 and 12, ESD Supertindent Dr. Fred Krauss said selection of the consultant was the next major step. The meeting was in response to the filing of petitions bearing 3,000 names of people asking the ESD to conduct the reorganization study. A reduced water rate for senior citizens in The Dalles may go onto a ballot May 18. At the request of City Councilman Gary Kopperud Monday night, the council agreed to form a study committee to prepare a ballot measure. A one story house at 2109 W. Ninth Place was gutted by a fire of undetermined causes this morning, but no one was home at the time of the fire. Wasco Rural Fire District officials said they had determined the occupant was Laurie Conyers, but they had not been able to contact her by 12:15 p.m. 40 Years Ago, February 3, 1962 Three men from The Dalles will attend the radiological monitoring school at Alameda, California February 12-18. Taking the course will be Irv Reierson, sanitarian for Wasco-Sherman County public Health Department; Lt. Robert Wilson of The Dalles Fire Department, and Henry Rassi, chemist at the Harvey Aluminum Plant. Reierson will serve as head radiological officer for Wasco County while Wilson will instruct city firemen and policemen in monitoring of radioactive fallout. The Dalles made it two in a row in a wrestling program here Friday night, winning seven events to post a 31-17 victory. DHS teammates voted the best effort award to John Greene, whose match with Bruce Davies, ended in a draw. Dalles Coach Dick Yecny was without the services of a couple of his regulars last night. 60 Years Ago, February 3, 1942 All visual aids now located on roofs of buildings throughout Wasco County for the purpose of guiding aerial navigation must be removed, J. Tracy Barton, Wasco County Civil Defense coordinator, Monday told members of the defense council meeting in city hall. Street maintenance crews today began erecting new street markers in downtown intersections under the direction of city engineer Homer S. Wall. One hundred and twelve metal signs will be placed in 29 street intersections. On completion of the downtown streets the crews will install 253 markers in the residential areas. 80 Years Ago, February 3, 1922 T.V. Allen and C.B. Church of Portland have opened a store in the Condon building, 218 1/2 Third Street, for the sale of woolen good remnants bought up from the woolen mills of the states. Members of the Chenowith Grange appeared before the county court yesterday afternoon to explain why their dance hall license should not be revoked on account of alleged disorderly conduct in the hall on the night before Christmas. M. Thornton and E.G. Fitzgerald told of the orderly dances which they had always had until the occasion when a party of six young men, who were said to be partially drunk, came out from The Dalles. 100 Years Ago, February 2, 1902 Yesterday, Dr. J.A. Reuter, arrived in the city and has formed a partnership with Dr. Ferguson, both in the hospital and office work. Dr. Reuter comes with the best of recommendations and they will make a strong combination in medical circles. The doctor was a classmate of Dr. E.E. Ferguson and was graduated with him from the Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1897. 3. The Dalles Chronicle January 27, 2002 Looking back is prepared each week by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, January 27, 1982 Wasco County politics heated up Tuesday with the filing of a judge and commissioner candidate bringing up a contested general election race for judge. Bill Hulse, Dufur rancher and wheat association official, will run for judge on the Republican ticket. County Judge Rick Cantrell, also a Republican, has decided to run for the commissioner's office, which will be vacated by County Commissioner Jim Comini, a Democrat, who announced last fall he will run for judge. 40 Years Ago, January 27, 1962 The 1962 celebration of Zion Lutheran Church's 65th anniversary was one of the topics of discussion at the annual meeting of the congregation last Sunday. Zion Lutheran was organized in 1897 and the congregation has worshipped in three church buildings during it history, according to the Reverend David C. Getzendaner, pastor. 80 Years Ago, January 27, 1922 Five timorous candidates were initiated into the mysteries of Elkdom in one of the most largely attended sessions of the local lodge held this year. The neophytes, J.E. Peck, Victor Anderson, Paul Weigalt, Fred Dutton and F.E. Matthews, were not neglected to say the least, although all were up and about as usual today. An enjoyable class social was held Wednesday evening by the members of the Klan of the Baptist Sunday school at the home of Miss Helen Fisch on Chenowith Road.
