Is the Taylor City Cemetery on line? Bonnie
Ken Tessendorff sent a query in mid-December, with a list of names he was interested in, including Louisa J. Carlton, who died in 1910 in Jackson County. I tried to email him directly but my message was returned. I'm sending this in case he's on the list with a different email address, or in case someone on the list knows how to reach him. Here's some info for him, (sorry it's two months later). Ken, I saw your query back in December. I didn't have time to look, then, but recently was at the Rogue Valley Genealogical Society in Phoenix, Oregon, (near Medford) so I looked for Louisa J. Carlton and I found her burial. According to the Rogue Valley Genealogical Society Cemetery Index she was born 30 April 1886, died 7 Nov. 1910, and is buried in the Nichols Family Plot. I looked in the published book of Jackson County, Oregon, Cemeteries, vol. 1, and found out that there were two Carltons buried in the Nichols Family Plot. Unfortunately there is a discrepancy in the information about the second Carlton: Carlton, Murty age 3 year, 0 months, 29 days The book says he died 17 Sep 1882 The Cemetery Index says he died 17 Nov. 1910. Also in the Nichols Family Plot are 8 Nichols, 1 Rader, and 1 Severance. The cemetery is on private property east of Eagle Point. It may be possible to obtain permission from the owner (the St. Laurent Land and Cattle Co.) to go on the private land. If that is possible, would you be interested in having me take digital photographs of the gravestones (if there are any), and send them to you as jpg's? Also, are you interested in additional information I might be able to find about Louisa Carlton? I'm not related -- I just have access to local genealogical information, and I like to help people who are distant. Anne Billeter billeter@entwood.com Medford, Oregon

Hi, I'm looking for information on my Great-Grand Uncle Norval Eugene Romspert who probably went by the name Eugene. Uncle Eugene was estranged from his family so nothing was known until about two months ago when I found that he got married to Lillie Harding on September 8, 1908 in Multnomah County Oregon. No more information was found on Lillie Harding Romspert. He was recently found in 1920 Census living with his wife Hattie, her father, Thomas W. Corder, and two daughters: Hattie B Spencer and Elma Spencer. Thomas W Corder was born in England and about 59 in 1920 Hattie Romspert was born in Oregon. I believe in 1892. She died Jan 15, 1975 in Clackamas Co Oregon. Hattie B Spencer was born Feb 10, 1911 in Oregon. According to Eugene's obit in 1966 she was Hattie Comella of Los Angeles. Hattie died in 1980 in Oregon. Elma R. Spencer was born July 15, 1913 in Oregon. Again in Eugene's obit she was Irma Wundelich of Portland. I think was the Erma Rocena Wunderlich who died Jan 17, 1992 in Multnomah County. Norval Eugene Romspert was born June 17, 1874 in Maryland. Acording to his obit he came to Oregon about 1894. He died July 26, 1964 in Newberg, Oregon. The Romspert family lived at 350 Oregon Street Portland in 1920. Any help locating information on my Uncle and his family in Oregon would be welcomed. -- Carolyn Pharr, Texas

Seeking information on Johann Christian Fredrick GISCH (born 7/4/1879 Clark County WI, died 8/1932 somewhere in OR). He married Mattie and they had two sons: Forrest and Arno. Also searching for Johann's brother, Ernest Henry Wilhelm GISCH (born 7/16/1881 Clark County WI, died 5/20/1905 somewhere in OR). Their sister Minnie GISCH also moved west, married Hank ANDREWS and supposedly lived in Centralia WA. I'd appreciate any leads. Thanks.

The Dalles Chronicle February 13, 2002 Floyd, age 98, and Gertrude Woodrum, 102, are approaching 72 years of marriage together. Nancy Lemons photo Wasco (Oregon) couple tied the knot June 26, 1930 By Nancy Lemons, of The Chronicle When Gertrude Weishaar accepted an invitation to go fishing, she didn't know it would lead to a 72-year relationship. Floyd, age 98, and Gertrude Woodrum, 102, now live in Wasco and say they love each other the same as they did when they were young sweethearts back in the 1930s. "He was handsome at that time. He still is to me," said Gertrude, as she smiles and turns to look at Floyd who is sitting in his recliner. The couple met in Knoxville, Iowa, where Gertrude lived at a boarding house, owned by her mother's friend. She moved into the boarding house following her mother's death. One day a group of seven construction workers, one of them being Floyd, came to ask about renting a room. Gertrude had to move out of her room to make room for the men. Floyd has described Gertrude in her earlier days as having hair as black as raven feathers and being so skinny you could hear her bones squeak when she walked. His friends told him he didn't have a chance at getting a date with Gertrude. But, Floyd had confidence and a plan - talk to her. Floyd says Gertrude was "quiet and didn't have much to say," but he got her to talking and found she had never been fishing. So, he invited her to go with him. "I cut her an 'ol willow pole, and she was a fisherman." said Floyd. "We went fishing and she caught me," he added, retelling the punch line to one of his favorite memories. From then on, Floyd says, "We were so close, you couldn't separate us." Three months after they met, Floyd started making plans. He told his boss the next time it rained he needed to get off work from his construction job to get married. That night, Floyd says the rain just poured down. The next day, his boss gave him $50 and told him to go get married. In all the excitement, the two young lovers forgot to check the gas tank before heading off to Kansas City, Missouri. They ran out of gas. Luckily, says Floyd, some people came to help and they were on their journey again to "happily ever after." Their plans included a church ceremony, but when the couple found out everything could be taken care of at the courthouse, they opted for that. It was a spur of the moment thing," explained Floyd. That was June 26, 1930 and the couple is now approaching 72 years together. "We've had a wonderful life and that's no maybe. I mean it when I say that," said Gertrude. The couple has enjoyed years of camping, hiking, playing cards, and , of course, fishing. They both love the outdoors, says their only son Mel. (The Woodrums have five grandchildren [two preceded them in death], 12 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren). In the early 40s, the Woodrums moved to the Pacific Northwest. People were needed to run the boilers at Hanford Nuclear Reservation, and Floyd was one of the first hired, he says. And, for a time, Floyd built trailerhouses, but sold that business after World War II. In 1969, they moved to Wasco, where they continue to live together. They may not get around as much anymore, but they still like spending time together. These days, instead of fishing, you can find them watching their favorite games shows - "Jeopardy", "Wheel of Fortune" and others. Joan Parrett, a caregiver to the Woodrums, says she has never seen two people who love each other so much. "They always go to bed at the same time. They kiss each other good night...There is no selfishness between them. They are always watching out for each other." said Parrett. When asked how they have managed to stay together for so long, Gertrude says, "We love each other." Floyd says Gertrude is "easy to get along with and she doesn't give you any trouble" - a comment that drew laughs from all in the room. But, Gertrude took no offense; she knew what he meant. "He was just a sweetheart. Always a loving guy", she said. An invitation to their 70th wedding anniversary celebration reads: "It is truly a test of love when 70 years come and go and two people wake each morning as though it were the first." Parrett says she can't think of any better words to describe the loving relationship she sees in the Woodrums. Written permission to reprint article given by The Dalles Chronicle, The Dalles, Oregon. Hi Sherri, Last summer I drove down to the University in Eugene, ORE. They have copies of all newspapers for all counties of ORE going back to the early days on microfilm. You can look up in the card catelogue to check which newspapers would have information for which areas . I found an obit for Oliver Perry Beagle in several papers from several different counties. I knew the date of his death in Roseburg, ORE in 1927(Old Soldier's home). He had family in Medford area, and Josephine Co. I found several different obits in those counties by searching throught the rolls of film for about a week after his death date in those newspapers. I don't think they do look-ups but perhaps you could hire someone to go look for you. That's how I found my information. Hope that helps. Karen B.
