    1. Re: [OREGON] my Oregon names
    2. Pete Wasser
    3. History of the Columbia River Valley From The Dalles to the Sea, Vol III, The S. J. Clarke Publishing Company, 1928, page 252 Thomas Bilyeu In the field of mechanical engineering, one of the best known men in the country is Thomas bilyeu, of Portland, who has won a high reputation and has become known nationally for his inventions, which have received distinctive recognition in the scientific world. Mr Bilyeu was born in Linn County, Oregon, in 1879, and is a son of Peter and Melinda (DeVaney) Bilyeu. The paternal grandfather, George Bilyeu, who was a native of Missouri, came to Oregon in the middle '40s and located at what is now known as Bilyeu Den, on Thomas creek above Scio, where he found plenty of wild game and an abundance of good water. There he took up a donation claim, as did several of his brothers, their aggregate holdings amounting to several square miles. They prospered and reared large families, so that at a later period there were several hundred voters of this family in Linn county. Peter Bilyeu was born and reared in Linn county and thereafter devoted his attention to farming until the failure of a bank at Albany so seriously crippled him financially that he left Linn county and, with his three sons, drove with a team to Idaho. His wife's death occurred at about that time. Thomas Bilyeu was ambitious for an education, having received only a public school training, and expressed to his father a desire to attend the Oregon State College. In thorough sympathy with his son's ambition, the father drove back to Corvallis and Thomas entered college, while the father went to work with his team to meet their expenses. He had the assistance of his sons, all of whom became students in the college, which they attended during the winter months, while in summer they worked in the neighborhood, receiving one dollar for a day's work of ten hours. They were compelled to live on a scanty diet, while their clothes were worn as long as they would hold together. When Tomas Bilyeu graduated from the Oregon State College, he delivered the class oration, wearing a suit that cost six dollars. After leaving college he worked at various occupations, about one year and managed to save eighty-four dollars. With this he bought a scalper's railroad ticket to New York, traveling all the way in a day coach, and when he landed at Ithaca, New York, he bought an umbrella for ninety cents. He tendered the merchant a twenty-dollar gold piece and received in change nineteen one-dollar bills and a dime. He entered Cornell University, where he worked his way through for one year, and then returned to Corvallis (Oregon) and for the next two years was a member of the faculty of his alma mater, teaching mechanical engineering. In 1906 Mr. Bilyeu came to Portland and opened an office as a mechanical engineer, and in 1909 he became a registered patent attorney. He has practiced these two professions here continuously since and has enjoyed a large and remunerative clientele. From 1908 to 1915 Mr. Bilyeu engaged extensively in construction work as a contractor and during this period was regarded as one of the foremost contractors in Oregon. He built part of the Oregon Trunk Railroad, and was one of the contractors on the Broadway bridge. Mr. Bilyeu's inventive genius has led him into advanced fields of experiment and among his achievements along this line is an international money machine, the operations of which are remarkable, for it counts all kinds of money rapidly and accurately, makes out payrolls and does similar sork, replacing the time and labor of a number of persons. The patents for this are now owned by the Remington Arms Company. The first model of this machine cost ninety-four thousand dollars, which gives some indication of its intricacy and size. Mr. Bilyeu has also invented the "Bilyeu check writer" and a machine for writing shorthand. In 1917 Mr. Bilyeu received the John Scott medal for distinguished work as an inventor on the recommendation of the committee on science of the Franklin Institute of Pennsylvania, the bronze medal being presented by the board of trustees of the city of Philadelphia, and he also received at that time a life membership in Franklin Institute. When the United States became involved int the World war Mr. Bilyeu established the Astoria Marine Iron Works and built seventeen wooden ships for the government, in this way contributing directly to the success of the war. In March, 1908, Mr. Bilyeu was united in marriage to Miss Josephine Schulmerich of Hillsboro, Oregon, a daughter of Conrad Schulmerich, and they are the parents of three children, namely: Eloise, who is attending the Oregon State College; Marion, who is in St. Helen's Hall; and Virginia, who is in Ainsworth School. Politically Mr. Bilyeu gives his support to the r epublican party and has maintained a good citizen's interest in public affairs, though he has never sought public office. He is a member of the University Club of Portland and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and holds an Oregon state license as a mechanical engineer. He has led a busy and useful life, fruitful in its results, and has well merited the high place which he holds in public esteem, while throughout his home community his spendid personal qualities and his cordial and affable manner have won for him the respect of all who know him. 1. [OREGON] GISCH on 1910 Oregon census
    2. On the Albany Public Library website, I found that they have the 1910 federal census for Linn Co. Oregon (call # Gen 795.35LINN). Could someone in that area help me out and go to the library to look up my GISCH family? John C. GISCH and Martha B. GISCH probably lived near Albany, as they are buried in Riverside Cemetery. In 1910, John would have been about 31 and Martha would have been about 29. I'm really hoping to find that they had 2 sons (Forrest and Arno). Any other info would be a bonus. Thanks in advance! 1. [OREGON] Seeking GISCH in Oregon
    2. Many thanks to this list and especially to Jacqueline, Pat, Mabel and Peggy. The John Gisch who was "found" (and his wife, Martha) are indeed the ones I've been looking for! I am so excited to finally "find" them! Of course, now I have even more questions! Can someone guide me to a current map of Oregon that would show me where Linn and Yamhill Counties are located. What are the major towns or cities in that area? Is there any way to find out a name/location of the cemetery where John and Martha GISCH (or GISH) are buried. If there is an active church still associated with the cemetery, I'd like an address to which I could write for more info. Also, thanks for the info on requesting an Oregon death certificate...I will do that, hoping to find info on children of John GISCH. Would anyone have a suggestion on how to find an obit for John GISCH? What towns or cities were there in Linn County that had a newspaper in 1932, from which I might find an obit for him? Now that you've helped me find John and Martha, I'd like to find their children and/or grandchildren. In fact, if I could find a living descendent, I have photos of the parents of John GISCH (Karoline nee AWE and Fredrick Christian GISCH) that I'd be glad to share, as well as extensive genealogy on my AWE line. I am so excited to have discovered this wonderful list. Many thanks again for all your assistance! Carol AWE

    2. Pete Wasser
    3. The Dalles Chronicle February 17, 2002 Compiled weekly by Elroy King 20 Years Ago, February 17, 1982 A 75 cent per month in residential sewer rates plus a corresponding increase in other rates effective March 1 was approved by The Dalles City Council Tuesday night. City Engineer Rod McKee presented a report that historically the gap between income and expenses had been closing and present conditions projected during the year would produce a $90,000 deficit by July 31, 1983. The present flat rate is $4.05 per month and would be $4.80 per month beginning March 1. 40 Years Ago, February 17, 1962 Michael V. McLucas, son of Mr. and Mrs. D.L. McLucas of Maupin (Oregon), was awarded a scholarship at the University of Oregon by the Independent Order of Oddfellows. He is a senior majoring in recreational management at the University. Klickitat (Washington), the Klickitat County B League champion, won the district tournament Friday night with a 40-33 win over Trout Lake (Washington) in the championship game played at Goldendale (Washington). Rangy Chris Neill, who sparked the Klickitat win Thursday night over Glenwood (Washington), broke the game wide open Friday with Trout Lake, scoring 30 points. 60 Years Ago, February 17, 1942 Mayor Norval H. Martin Monday was named commander of defense forces in Wasco County defense council by council members meeting at city hall. Martin, who will have charge of all emergency activity in the event of invasion or bombing later will name his assistants. Air raid wardens, auxiliary firemen and police reserves, fire watchers, aircraft warning observers, rescue and relief crews will come under his jurisdiction. Word was received here today that Miss Elizabeth Wilson, daughter of Judge and Mrs. Fred W. Wilson of this city, has been appointed as one of the air raid wardens at Whitman College. Miss Wilson has charge of her section in the women's dormitory. The Misses Selma Gram, Tonchita Munson, Mr. and Mrs. Morey Katz, Mr. and Mrs. William Weidekind, Mrs. and Mrs. Chet Arthur, Ben Cook, Al Pizzolato and Leonard Hilton were at Bend and Redmond Sunday on a bowling trip. 80 Years Ago, February 17, 1922 The crest of the epidemic of grippe has apparently been passed in The Dalles and Wasco county, all available sources of information indicated today. Dr. Fred Thompson, city health officer, this afternoon said that the number of cases of grippe being treated by physicians is on the decline. Thirteen bottles of moonshine whiskey carried in a suitcase, last night proved the undoing of James Williams, who was arrested by Patrolmen Lambert and Jermann upon a charge of having intoxicating liquor in his possesion. Williams said that he had just come in on the boat from Portland, and that he had the liquor for his own use. He was taking it with him to eastern Oregon, where he was going to work, for use as an occasional invigorant, he told Chief of Police Heater. C.C. Aitchison for the last five months instructor of physics and chemistry at the local high school, has received an appointment to the position of assistant government chemist at Washington, D.C., and has resigned his position in The Dalles today, City Superintendent of Schools R.L. Kirk announced today. 100 Years Ago, February 17, 1902 Friday evening of last week, Mt. 3. Hi Anne, I really appreciate your taking the time to look up the information on Louisa Carlton. Unfortunately, she is not the person I thought she was. I was led to believe that she was Louisa Cummins, born in California about 1860 but this information does not seem to be correct. I guess there is no reason to pursue this person any further. I am in the process of trying to get more information on Louisa Cummins so I might be able to determine what happened to her. I have located her mother and four sisters who all moved to Oregon in 1876, but have been unable to find anything on Louisa yet. I now believe that she may have died before 1900, but don't know where the death may have taken place. I suspect it may have been in Douglas County. I also don't yet know whether she ever married. You also helped me a few years ago when I had another question regarding a family in the Jackson county area. I really appreciate all the help you have provided.
