    1. Re: [OREGON] WWI draft registration
    2. Kevin Fraley
    3. Lilly, Boundary County, Idaho is on the Canadian border, 300 miles or more by road from La Grande. This would not have been a casual trip, and certainly not a day trip. There have never been any sorts of governmental connections between the two areas. Your g-grandfather must have either been temporarily working or residing in that area of extreme northern Idaho or northeastern Washington, or perhaps he was on an extended visit to relatives in that area. Good luck, Kevin Fraley ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lilly" <malik@scs-net.org> To: <OREGON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 08, 2002 12:51 AM Subject: [OREGON] WWI draft registration > In doing a search at rootsweb for the name of my Greatgrandfather, William Edgar Leach, one record that came up was his WWI draft registration record. It clearly was him, as the name and birth date were the exact same as our Family Bible. It did not state were he was born, due to the fact that those waiting to register on the LAST day required by law didn't have to state that. > What concerned me is WHY did he go to Boundary County, Idaho to register that day? I know that he lived in La Grande, Oregon at that time. The record states that you don't have to neccessarily live in Boundary County to have registered there that day, but that there is some "tie" to Boundary County, Idaho. WHAT is that TIE? Was Boundary County, ID the county seat for La Grande (Union Co.) at some previous point, and that is the reason? I appreciate any comments, or advice. 3. Harney under Grant County and Malheur under Baker County. A word of caution - nearly all settlements in both counties are "lost". Only Camp Harney in Harney County and Jordan Valley in Malheur County. As for the communities along the Idaho border, they are either mis-counted as part of Idaho or are "lost". The transcribed census for both counties are online http://www.rootsweb.com/~orbaker/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~orgrant/ David David Samuelsen, who transcribed both counties. 1. [OREGON] BROWER family of Oregon
    2. Lilly
    3. To Dan M. Concerning your mention of Brower family ties. I believe that ALL early BROWER settlers to Oregon are my relatives. The first Brower came to La Grande, Union Co., OR in 1881 on a wagon train from Corydon, IA. That was Emma Brower, married to John E. Wright. However, that was just the start. After she arrived safely, she sent word to her Mother in Corydon to come out and join them. Her mother was Nancy W. Brower who was the widow of Dr. Jeremiah Brower, the Wayne Co. Judge in Corydon, but he had died 1875. So widow Nancy, with son Jeremiah Brower Jr. and 13 other Brower descendants took the Oregon Trail and reunited with Emma in La Grande. Unless you descend from a "new" Brower, and not from that early settlement, then most likely your roots go back to either Dr. Brower himself, or one of his brother's who also sent children in the first "WAVE" of Brower's to settle at La Grande. The Union Co. Website has a nice bio online about H.A. Hansen, and his wife was Sarah Brower, and this gives the whole story also. Nancy W. Brower died in 1901 in La Grande. Lilly.

    3. 1 since the list HAS a list manager , you all should make your complaints to me only. this spares list time, a members feelings, and offers me a chance to help my list <G> the char set here is ** charset="windows-1256" ** 2 no you should not unsubscribe 3 I downloaded the char set, it did not hurt me at all 4 I thought we were genealogists and historians , it seems to me then we need to roll with culture some what so we can learn, it dont mean we delete or run off every thing, or every one that is different or does things different, we welcome them with open happy e-mails . 5 if some one has a problem on down loading a char set, just choose cancel, you should get the biggest part if not all of the message any way ! Sorry to see this happen. I hope we can make * Lilly* feel welcome here. However, some one told me once that they got a message whenever I wrote, that said did they want to download some program in order to read Arabic. This is because I live in Syria, and though I only write in English, because it is the only language I know, my computor program can be switched to Arabic if you choose to do so. My Computor program in Windows and has Arabic Enhancement, though I have never used it. However, you do not have to download anything to read my messages. I would like to hear from the list if they think I should unsubscribe because of these 2 complaints. I don't want to cause any trouble, but I am descended from settlers in Oregon since 1880 and I need this list for research. I have recieved a lot of very interesting information. 1. [OREGON] The Santa Fe Trail: March Spotlight
    2. Elizabeth
    3. Hi Trail Fans The March, 2002 Spotlight of the Month is The Santa Fe Trail: The Great Trail of Commerce http://www.stjohnks.net/santafetrail/ The authors of this website claim: "Within this website you will find information on the Santa Fe Trail as it makes it way through the west half of the State of Kansas." That is an understatement! On the almost 500 pages of this site you'll find information about explorers of the area from Coronado, Jedediah Smith, Zebulon Pike and Josiah Gregg, to the government expeditions led by Sibley, Emory, Whipple and St. George Cooke, to the early entrepreneurs along the Santa Fe Trail such as Becknell, Bent, and Magoffin. GPS locations are given for the military forts along the trail, the river crossings, and various markers placed along the trail, including those of the DAR. The sites of Indian treaties are discussed along with present day museums and current archeological digs. Later activity on the trail, from the stage route of the Butterfield Overland Dispatch and the Smoky Hill Route to the laying of the rails for the Union Pacific RR, is all found here. The authors go into great detail about how to follow the trail today by automobile. There are numerous present day and historical photos and sketches. The entire site is well documented, with numerous pages of "footnotes" and bibliographies, and new information continues to be added, so visit it often. There is no part of the Santa Fe Trail through Kansas left untouched! This little bit of information about this website on the Santa Fe Trail only touches the surface! There's also a good "search engine" to use for the site. Hope you enjoy the March Spotlight! Don't forget to visit the previous Spotlights at: http://www.over-land.com/spotlites.html Also don't forget that I'm always taking suggestions for future "Spotlights" Let me know about your favorite trail site! Thanks Liz

    2. Pete Wasser
    3. The Dalles Chronicle March 3, 2002 Looking back in prepared weekly by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, March 3, 1982 Monday was the first day on the job as commander of Oregon State Police in The Dalles for Lieutenant Russell Thiess. He was transferred from the Arlington (Oregon) office, where he has been since 1978. 40 Years Ago, March 3, 1962 Approximately 250 firemen from all parts of the state had registered by midforenoon in Arlington (Oregon) for the fire school, the instruction for which will be provided by the burning of a number of buildings that must be cleared in connection with the relocation project. First building to be set ablaze was the Methodist church parsonage, near the church building that was erected in 1878 and itself tabbed for destruction by fire. {Relocation made necessary by back waters of The Dalles Dam}. Dan P. McLoughlin of The Dalles has filed his candidacy for the new district judge position to be created in Wasco County. McLoughlin, a resident here for many years, filed his candidacy in Salem (Oregon). Earlier, local attorney Vern Burda, filed for the judgeship. 60 Years Ago, March 3, 1942 Appointment of J.B. Kirk and J.B. Hemanek, respectively as vice commanders of the Wasco County civil defense council were effected yesterday afternoon at the regular semimonthly meeting of the organization, held in the city council chambers at the city hall. Selected by Commander Norval H. Martin, Judge Kirk will have supervision of all Wasco County territory outside The Dalles proper while Hermanek was selected to supervise activities inside The Dalles. Arrested by city police yesterday were Millard R. Minor, 23, and Shelby H. Merritt, 23, both of whom are charged with being deserters from the United States army at Fort Lewis, Washington. The youths are being held in the city jail pending their return to the encampment. 80 Years Ago, March 3, 1922 One of the oldest clothing businesses in The Dalles has finally passed from the family of J.P. McInerny. Announcement was made today that Joseph McInerny had sold his store at 203 Second Street to Simon and Benjamin Cohen and they have taken possession immediately. Until about a year ago, J.P. McInerny operated his business, and upon his retirement it was taken in hand by his son. Robert A. Twiss was elected last night to the position of exalted ruler of The Dalles Lodge No. 303 B.P.O.E., succeeded retiring Exalted Ruler Roy F. Taylor. Other officers elected were R.C. Bradshaw, esteemed leading knight; Dr. Thompson Coberth, esteemed loyal knight; Simon Cohen, esteemed lecturing knight; W.L. Crichton, secretary; H.W. Scherrer, treasurer; John Will, trustee, three years; George Fitzgerald, tiler; Roy F. Taylor, delegate to grand lodge, Atlantic City; H.C. Kuck, alternate. 100 Years Ago, March 3, 1902 It was the intention of the Methodist of this city to close revival services last night and Evangelist Martin expected to leave tonight for Spokane (Washington); but such an intense interest was manifested at the meeting yesterday that it seemed impossible to call a halt and they will continue through Wednesday at least. The church wa crowded at both services yesterday, and a large number of seekers made their wasy to the altar and some professed conversion. F.G. Oster, formerly of Pendleton (Oregon), is in this city representing a new insurance order, the Royal Highlanders. He will organize a lodge at The Dalles and then also will establish one in Pendleton.
