The men were given a grilling at the police station, and stoutly maintained their innocence and ignorance of the crime. They were still being held at a late hour this afternoon, although the police do not believe they have the right persons. The decorators and painters have largely completed their work at the auditorium (Civic Audiorium, The Dalles) and aside from a few unfinished details the Robert Paysee construction company is ready to turn the building over to the city. It's really in the middle of nowhere. Okay, get yourself a decent county map. The cem is north of Meridian ROAD, along whiskey creek. I can get you the metes and bounds (latitude and longitude) if it would make anything easier. The cemetery was transcribed several years ago. At that time it was described as being an abandoned cem in very poor condition. Less than 30 graves, about 20% not marked. Last burial was 1890. I got info, but probably not what you want. You sound like you're a seasoned researcher, so I'll tell you what I've found, and you can put it together. Edward Middlebrook appears on the 1910 soundex for Wheeler County (a long way from Baker City). Ed does NOT appear on the 1920 soundex. And, Ed is not on the Oregon Death Index for 1903 -- 1920. I don't have access to the divorce registers before 1960, so cannot check that. Frankly, I think the reason you can't find anything more about him in Oregon is that he moved out of Oregon. I'd see if he went back to Idaho or Iowa. As a "genealogist" you should already know that. Why don't you volunteer to do lookups, that way the greatest home for the books is right where they're at. In doing a search at rootsweb for the name of my Greatgrandfather, William Edgar Leach, one record that came up was his WWI draft registration record. It clearly was him, as the name and birth date were the exact same as our Family Bible. It did not state were he was born, due to the fact that those waiting to register on the LAST day required by law didn't have to state that. What concerned me is WHY did he go to Boundary County, Idaho to register that day? I know that he lived in La Grande, Oregon at that time. The record states that you don't have to neccessarily live in Boundary County to have registered there that day, but that there is some "tie" to Boundary County, Idaho. WHAT is that TIE? Was Boundary County, ID the county seat for La Grande (Union Co.) at some previous point, and that is the reason? I appreciate any comments, or advice. Lillian Kathleen Martin.
