It's by the Ross Island Bridge, and address in the telephone book. It purports to be the largest private library on the west coast. If you like what you see (when you get there), they also have websites. If you don't see what you want, be sure to ask, because they have a lot of back rooms they store things in. ===== With best wishes, Jim Schira __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. May 1, 2002 To our users: The state budget crisis has resulted in substantial cuts to the budget of the State Archives. After careful examination of our alternatives, I have decided that we will try to maintain our services to you by increasing our fees. We are working on a revised fee schedule and we will adopt it as an Oregon Administrative Rule. As soon as the Rule is filed, I will post it on the State Archives web site http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/ for your information and comment. Our target date for the fee increase to go into effect is July 1, 2002. I regret that these measures are necessary. The Archives staff is rightly proud of the service it provides to all of you. Many of you have been kind enough to send us your compliments on the quality of these services. With your understanding and support, I am hopeful that we will be able to continue this tradition. 3. My sons' great grandfather (on his father's side of the family) is John Mills. I don't know his birthdate or birthplace. He lived in Vancouver, Wa. I have it written that he married Agnes Seese in Vancouver, Wa. Their child is Audrey who is my ex-husband's mother. She was born about 1930 in Vancouver, Wa. and I think she has 1 or 2 sisters. John Mills' father is John (that's what I wrote) and Audrey did not have any information on him. If you want more info. about these people I am willing to call Audrey in Goldendale, Wa. to see if she knows more. Its pretty sketchy, I know. Maybe she knows someone in her family who would know more. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lilly" <malik@scs-net.org> To: <OREGON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 02, 2002 9:06 AM Subject: [OREGON] John Quincy Mills born about 1860 MO. > > I am looking for John Quincy Mills born about 1860 in Missouri. 3. This is really a long shot..my ex mother-in-law who now lives in Goldendale Wa., told me her maiden name was Mills and that she was born in Vancouver, Wa area. Audrey is not that old (about 70). I never did write down their names, but I will search a bit for that. She never mentioned anything about her family coming from Oregon and I don't think she ever traced her family line. I can find her phone number and call. I'm not sure she has e-mail. Vancouver is right across the Columbia River from Portland, Oregon. That is where I live now. I know there are a lot of Mills families around. 3. I have just completed indexing the above book and will be placing it on the ORWASCO-L@rootsweb.com website. The book was written by the Friends of the Maupin Library in 1986 and contains reminisces of members of the community. The book is available from the Maupin Library, SWCLibrary@centurytel.net. I do not know the area and its history personally so please do not contact me. I've copied the names as they appear on each page. Spellings differ from one article to another and I leave it to your research to learn if they are speaking of the same individual. Earline Wasser

    1. [OREGON] Oregon's Historic Trails: May Spotlight
    2. Elizabeth
    3. Hi all The May Spotlight features Oregon's Historic Trails. http://www.endoftheoregontrail.org/oregontrails/index.html Oregon's history is deeply tied to its trails. The routes followed by American explorers stretched across the Oregon Country a full 50 years before the Oregon Trail migrations of the mid-1800s. In 1998, the Oregon Trails Coordinating Council issued a report inventorying sixteen historic trails recognized to exist within Oregon's borders. The story behind each of these trails, from the early Indian paths, to the later wagon roads, is explained. A relief map with the trail superimposed accompanies each explanation. Also included is a section which lists known interpretive resources along each trail and suggests driving directions which approximate the routes of the historic trails. What is perhaps the most valuable for further research is a detailed bibliography for each of the trails. This information is being hosted by the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center which can be accessed at: http://www.endoftheoregontrail.org/index.html Please visit the previous months' Spotlights at: http://www.over-land.com/spotlite.html Many thanks to those of you who continue to recommend a Spotlight! 1. [OREGON] Nevita and Katana Vollmer Deaths
    2. Pete Wasser
    3. The Dalles Chronicle April 19, 2002 Woman, Child Killed in Crash When Car Goes Into Willamette Photo caption: Tow truck driver Vann Beckner of Albany (Oregon) left, adjusts the tow chains on a Jaguar pulled from the Willamette River, as Benton County Sheriff Corporal Richard Riffle, left, checks a purse recovered from the car and an unidentified Benton Sheriff's deputy walks behind, near Albany. ALBANY (AP) - An albany woman and her young daughter were killed Thursday when their Jaguar plunged into the Willamette River. Police said the Jaguar and another car were speeding toward Albany when the Jaguar veered off the road and into the river around 8:45 a.m. The body of 6-year-old Katana Vollmer was discovered in the light blue Jaguar after it was pulled from the river, said Benton County District Attorney Scott Heiser. Deputies and divers were unaware the girl was in the car until it was pulled from the river, Heiser said. The girl's mother, Nevita Volmer, 36, died two hours later at Albany General Hospita. Autopsies were scheduled for Friday. A witness said Vollmer's Jaguar was following a white Toyota at speeds of 80 to 90 mph. The vehicles were about 2 1/2 miles from the Oregon 20 intersection. According to Heiser, a witness said the cars were cutting a corner when they apparently noticed an oncoming vehicle and tried to swing back into the southbound lane. Both drivers overcorrected and the vehicles began fishtailing, according to the witness. The driver of the Toyota regained control of his car and continued south. The Jaguar went off the road, tore through the underbrush and plunged into the Willamette. Police said the white car is registered to Dennis Sarriugarte, a Salem (Oregon) attorney. Sarriugarte was alone in his car and traveling to Albany for an arbitration hearing, said longtime friend Steve Gorham, a Salem lawyer. He was unaware of the crash until he left the hearing and saw police gathered around his car, Gorham said. Police recovered the Toyota and are examing it for evidence. The accident is under investigation, Heiser said. Written permission to reprint article given by The Dalles Chronicle, The Dalles, Oregon. Copied and submitted by Earline Wasser.

    1. [OREGON] CUMMINS in Oregon
    2. Kenneth Tessendorff
    3. Hello, I have recently discovered that the five daughters of James Cummins and Polly Ann Man moved from California to Oregon in 1876. All the girls were married in Oregon. On the marriage certificate of Sarah F. Cummins and L. M. Archambeau (14 Jul 1878, Douglas County, Oregon), it says that the marriage took place at the home of Wm. R. Cummins. I am not aware that the girls had any relatives named Cummins in Oregon and wonder whether this Wm. R. Cummins is a relative. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might know anything about a Wm. R. Cummins that lived in Douglas County, Oregon in 1878. On the marriage certificate for Martha Cummins and William Anderson (27 Nov 1900, Douglas County, OR), Blanche Cummins was a witness. I don't know who Blanche Cummins was and would be interested in any information about her. Thank you for your help. Ken Tessendorff San Carlos, CA
