    3. "Last week's photo, below, showed the old boat landing at the foot of Union Street, with the sternwheeler Bailey Batzert pulled up to the dock. Bruce Harris and Terray Harmon had the right answer, and identified the house at the upper right as "the old Roland place." Loyal Quackenbush also knew that it had served as the Klickitat County (Washington) courthouse for eight years until the county seat was moved to Goldendale (Washington). 3. "Last week's photo above shows The Dalles Soda Works. Loyal Quackenbush says that at the time the photo was taken, 1911, it was known as the Rose Soda Works. He identifies the driver as Vic Blaser and the men in back as Bill and Charlie Borders, John Rose and Tony Paulson. Don and Marla Budd added that the name was changed to Pepsi Cola Bottling Company of The Dalles in 1978." 3. "Last week's photo, left, was a stumper for most local historians, though Flora Moynihan of Maupin (Oregon) knew that the name we erased was B.D. Fraley and that the shop was located in Maupin. We did miss one correct contributor from the previous week. Joe George wrote that Ezra Meeker returned to The Dalles later and rededicated the stone in City Park in 1919 or 1920. George writes, "I, as a boy of 4 or 5 attended the meeting at the city park. I remember the tall bony man with the white hair and chin whiskers. He was introduced by Circuit Judge Fred Wilson and Ed Kurtz, for whom Kurtz Gymnasium was named" The Dalles Chronicle March 3, 2002 Written permission to reprint History Mystery article given by The Dalles Chronicle, The Dalles, Oregon. 3. "Last week's picture, at left, was contributed by Ted Gibbs of Dufur (Oregon), who identified the structure as the Mt. Hood lookout, located at the top of the mountain. The picture was taken in 1928 or 1929. Three names are known, From left, Ron Creel, Berry Creel and Nevada Creel. Ted Davenport remembered making the climb in 1953, when just a few boards were left. Terray Harmon pointed out that every piece of lumber in the lookout had to be hauled up on the back of a climber, and the cables were intended to keep the structure standing in spite of ferocious winds. They worked for several decades before it seccumbed." The Dalles Chronicle April 28, 2002 Written permission to reprint History Mystery article given by The Dalles Chronicle, The Dalles, Oregon. 3. "It was another busy week for historical sleuths, who knew that the house pictured below, was actually The Dalles Sanitorium, located at Tenth and Union streets where Zion Lutheran Church sits today. Our thanks to John Martin and his antique shop Down Memory Lane for supplying the colorized postcard with the view. John Lundell added that it was operated by a doctor name Giezendurfer. We were also intrigued by a gentleman who guessed that it was a brothel reputedly located 'between Mosier and Hood River." Any information on such an establishment out there?" 3. "It was a booming week for History Mystery buffs. The photo at left kindled many memories, and everyone knew that the horses and men were using a seine net in conjunction with the person in the rowboat. It was a common method of catching salmon in the days of the heavy runs, along with dip nets and fish wheels. Several canneries operated in the area, most notably that of the Seuferts, near the site of The Dalles Dam. Bill Mead said that the two men with the horses were Jack and Carl Kaser, and Virginia Remington McLaughlin concurred, while Alice Morgan said the man with the white camp might be her first husband, Joe Pinell, who had a white horse named King and a sorrell." 3. "A number of folks knew the correct answer to last week's History Mystery illustration...it depicted plans for a Lewis & Clark monument that was begun in the late 1930s under the Works Projects Administration. Construction was halted by the outbreak of World War II. Basalt cornerstones (one of which carries a time capsule) were quarried at Boyd (Oregon) and the majority of the monument is constructed from sandstone taken from East Scenic Drive (The Dalles). Betty Foster added that her husband, Lafey Foster, had been an honor guard at the dedication ceremony, and Jim Comini recalls attending the cerermony as a young boy. Terray Harmon said his father worked on the monument and he brought in a 21" high model, pictured above." 3. "Last week's mystery photo, below, featured a crew doing something for a utility. The contraption was designed to hook up to power lines and run a current through the pipes to thaw them. It took pretty specialized knowledge to answer this one, and only two managed to answer correctly. One of them, Max Jahn, wrote: "The fascinating contraption, as you described it, was used to thaw frozen water pipes in The Dalles sometime in the late 20s...The gentleman on the right with his hand and arm on the barrel is my dad, Frank Jahn. He was employed by Pacific Power & Light for approximately 40 years in The Dalles as Line Superintendent...Frank Jahn died in March of 1984 at the age of 105." Linda Wilson of PUD (Northern Wasco County Public Utilities District) was able to identify the photo, which was submitted by Jake Grossmiller. His grandfather, Henry Rumsey, is the fellow on the left side of the picture." 1. [OREGON] Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicle's Files
    2. Pete Wasser
    3. The Dalles Chronicle May 5, 2002 Looking Back is compiled by Elroy King 20 Years Ago, May 5, 1982 In an unexpected move here (Antelope, Oregon) Tuesday night, Rajneesh Foundation announced its own buying and building moratorium to give mediation a chance to succeed. The announcement came from David Knapp, resource manager for the foundation, who told the council that while mediation efforts were continuing, the Rajneesh would not buy nor contract to buy more Antelope properties. United Telephone of Hood River Tuesday was awarded the contract for the installation for telephone equipment at the Northern Wasco PUD's (Public Utilities District) new office building at the corner of East Third and Court street. Acting PUD Manager Harold Haake said the contract was for the lease-puchase of the equipment at a cost of approximately $570 per month. The equipment includes a switchboard and 16 phone units in the building. The Dalles and Hood River will combine American Legion baseball programs this summer, announced George Little, last year's Legion program manager at The Dalles and one of a four man management committee for this year's team. 40 Years Ago, May 5, 1962 Mrs. Bertha Kirsch, Oregon's Mother of the Year, will leave by plane Sunday morning from Portland for New York where she will compete with her counterparts from all of the other states for National Mother of the Year honors. Mrs. Kirsch was honored in The Dalles Friday afternoon with a parade headed by the DHS (Dalles High School) Booster Girls and a reception at the local Elks Lodge, under supervision of the public relations committee of The Dalles Chamber of Commerce, headed up by co-chairman Cal P. Horn and Clair Penners. The general trend of taxes is upward but there will be a higher valuation on which to spread the burden, Assessor C. A. (Mac) Wood told the Wasco County Tax League Friday night. Wood said increases are indicated again this year in the budgets prepared by various tax levying units of government, but the only "bonafide" budget approved and in his hands is that of School District 12, The Dalles. Assessed valuation of the county may be up as much as $2 million from the present figure of about $37 million the assessor said. 60 Years Ago, May 6, 1942 Workmen today started removal of debris in the burned Horn saloon, preparatory of salvage of articles not too badly damaged by the recent fire. While definite plans have not yet been announced it is understood that the building will be reconstructed, eliminating the second story, providing priority ratings can be obtained for essential materials. 80 Years Ago, May 5, 1922 The first tournament play on the new golf course of The Dalles Country Club will open with preliminary flights in the beginners handicap. This will be the initial competitive event for the new club, and a handsome silver trophy cup is to be donated by grounds committee. C.E. Nichols, professional in charge of the course, will be on hand to receive the scores. Contract for building the Mill Creek Market Road was let this morning by the county court to the United Contracting company of Portland, for $51,472.12. The low bid of the five submitted was that of the Newport Construction Company of Newport of Hermiston (Oregon), which was $51,399.28 or only $72.74 under the United Contracting company bid. A.J. Welton, president of the United company, asserted that the bid of the Newport construction company was "unbalanced" in that the reinforced concrete to be used on the job was bid in at below cost. 100 Years Ago, May 5, 1902 In the coarse of a few days, or about Sunday, the D.P.& A.N. steamer "Shaver" will change its name to "Glenola" which is a smoother, more pleasing name for a steamboat. This name is a contraction of two names, Glen and Nolan and is given the steamer in honor of the president and vice president. J.C. Hostetler wears the swellest Williamson campaign button going. The name of Williamson is the same as the others, but the pin is set in diamonds and sapphires. While not all voters may wear the same gilt edged button they can all at least cast a gilt-edged for our congressman. The Baldwin opera house will change hands the first of next month. R.J. Gorman having leased it for the coming year. For some time Andy Sandvig has. I have just received a copy of his wifes death certificate. She died Oct 5, 1928. On the certificate it is stated she is the widow of Charles BRISCOE.
