The Dalles Chronicle, May 12, 2002 Looking Back is prepared each week by Elroy King Jeff Kienlen pitched the victory and hit a double as Coca Cola (team) defeated Martin Marietta 10-1 Tuesday in a Western Little League major division game. Skip Koprowski had a pair of singles and Scott Carty a double to support Coke's effort. Martin Marietta had only two hits in the game. The Atlanta Braves Tuesday purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Ken Dayley from Richmond of the International League. Dayley, who pitched at The Dalles High School and the University of Portland had a 4-2 record and a 3.11 earned run average with Richmond when he was called up. Choral awards for The Dalles High School's vocal music department were made during the spring concert Tuesday night at the high school auditorium. Pat Wiese won the Arion Foundation Award, which is given annually by the Cascade Singers. Jim Buzan made the presentation. The two winners of the National School Choral Awards were Sander Smith and DuAnne Henkle. 40 Years Ago, May 12, 1962 Reserved space on the special train that will leave The Dalles for the World's Fair city of Seattle (Washington) in June is "filling fairly rapidly" according to A.O. (Buzz) DeFrate, assistant manager of The Dalles Chamber of Commerce. The air conditioned trains compartments will serve as the fair visitor's residences during the two days in Seattle while the car's are berthed at Seattle's Union Station. Seattle buses leave from the station to the monorail core center or go to the fairgrounds. No meals are provided. 80 Years Ago, May 12, 1922 A steel and concrete bridge, absolutely fireproof, of the Luten arch type of construction, was yesterday afternoon selected by directors and stockholders of The Dalles-Oregon-Washington Toll Bridge company from three sets of preliminary plans under consideration for the span across the Columbia River near Seufert's. President George A. Sears of the Union Bridge company, presented three sets of plans drawn by engineers of his company from surveys made on the ground. The type of bridge selected will cost about $365,350 according to the engineers estimate, Sears said. The Union Bridge company will next go ahead with selection of the exact site. This is my gift to all of you for Mothers Day. My poetry has been published in 44 states (so far) and in the UK and Canada. This is one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy it. Sarah MY ANCESTOR GRAND MOTHER I search for you yet do not even know your name I press on praying my efforts will prove fruitful the records do not list you or the other women who have lived and loved and laughed, gave birth, and died, the records perpetrate the myth that you were never here but I stand whole and bare my soul and vow to find you as I live I search for you in old records, in churches, at the Embassy, in small dimly lit rooms in the back of obscure libraries and archives and pour over barely readable handwritten ledgers with magnifying glass and flashlight I live on mainly toast these days there isn't time for meals or much sleep feeling as I always do, on the very brink of discovery Perhaps THIS will be the day I find the one seemingly insignificant clue, which will lead me to you although I did not find you listed in the Census Records I am not deterred, you may turn up yet, on an Immigration or Naturalization list somewhere perhaps, or maybe tucked away inside some bank of vital statistics, long forgotten like so many others, your name having become lost over the long years Your name could be lying even now amidst the millions of documents stored and locked away safeguarded in the bowels of a giant warehouse all stopped up from apathetic crowds who have long ceased their visits your precious name, lying just inside a myriad of records packed in tight, packed in to stay never guessing I would come @Sarah Elizabeth Rose

I would like to know if there are any records in the Oregon State Archives that would give me information on the purchase or sale of a Farm. According to the 1900 census for Oregon, Ireland Pct, Hiram Palmer owned a farm. Question 28 of the Census is "number of Farm Schedule", the number 80 is entered here. What is the significance of this, can I lookup information based on this. My second question relates to the location of Precincts. Where would Ireland Pct be and is there a recourse for locating it. Thank You very Much. John Palmer Michigan
How about trying these same questions with the Oregon State Reference staff. They are very good at their jobs and if they find something will send it to for pennies a copy. Very inexpensive compared to other sources. Details at the site below: http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/reference.html --- John & Mary Palmer <mipalmers@comcast.net> wrote: > I would like to know if there are any records in the Oregon State > Archives > that would give me information on the purchase or sale of a Farm. > > According to the 1900 census for Oregon, Ireland Pct, Hiram Palmer owned > a > farm.
