Hello List My great uncle John Downes emigrated from England to Oregon in the early 1900s. I have his death certificate which states that he died in 1925 at 540 dekum Ave. Portland. His occupation was Attorney, and his wife Alice was present. He was buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. There were two daughters, Marie and Lucie. Marie became a nun, convent unknown. Any info. welcome. Good researching. Erica Perkins ericaperkins@blueyonder.co.uk

To our users: Today the Archives Division filed an amendment to the Oregon Administrative Rules that revises the fees we charge. When you review these fees, please understand that none of these increases apply to those of you who come to the Archives Building to do your research. In the past, our fees reflected our costs in supplies and equipment. Now they also include our staff costs. Because of the budget cuts the Archives has taken, we must recover some of our staff costs from the fees we charge. We determined these fees by careful study and analysis of the actual time it takes to perform the work, as well as costs in equipment, supplies and postage. Please direct your comments to me by e-mail at roy.c.turnbaugh@state.or.us or by mail at Archives Building, 800 Summer St. NE, Salem, Oregon 97310. A hearing on these rule changes has been scheduled for 10 a.m., June 19, 2002, at the Archives Building. My dad was wounded in the Korean War. We used to have newspaper clippings but they are gone. I tried the Portland, Ore. papers but nothing and I know he lived in the Tigard area, Washington Co. and wondered if anyone knows where I could write to see if they had anything. His name was Jack Cates and the injury was in Sept of 1950. thanks for any ideas linda

On the Record of Deaths - Portland for Sept. 19, 1888 it shows that a John Smith, age 31 died at Quimby House. What was Quimby House and where was it located? Thank you. Edel
My Great Uncle said there was a baby born to his parents before (him he was born May 13 1919) that died in infancy. This supposedly happened in Astoria, OR between 1916 and that time. Parents would have been Franklin Arthur Cooley and Irene Dow Cooley. Is there somewhere to check those record? Pat in WA State

I don't think this will help you with regard to your elusive grandfather, but I believe James Jefferson CALAVAN whom you name is s/o William Larkin CALAVAN b.1830/31-WhitleyCo,KY & Serilda GOIN whose lineage still uncertain. Unfortunately, I'm unable to tell you anything further on either James or his parents as they too seem to be almost as elusive as your ancestor, except that some of them were said to be in Lassen Co., CA after being in Oregon, and your message is first time that I've seen any death info on James & have no idea whether he or his brother Frank married or had children. Hope someone else on the OR List can provide something more helpful. Thanks so much for all the replies to my question about Hugo. I thought it must be near Grant's Pass as this is where I have him on a census. I have him dying there in 1905 but I have not been able to find him on the Oregon Death Index. I expect maybe a wrong spelling of his name. Maybe some of you have heard of Garret Crockett from Josephine County. Thanks again. Lorelee
Hi Lorelee. Yes, there is a Hugo just north of Grants Pass, in Josephine County. Hope this helps! Cheryl
I am looking for a Portland newspaper headline article in about 1935. It is about a robbery of a local restaurant in which my great uncle shot the robber while he was driving away. I don't know the name of the restaurant. My great uncle and aunt were Ralph and Louise LEDUC. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to find this newspaper, or the article. Or if someone could locate it that would be wonderful too! Thank you, Sharon
in Josephine County, used to have own postal office but not now. Other name - Gravel Pit north of Grants Pass, just west of freeway.
