Hi OR Listers, I recently received a copy of a photograph of my grandfather, Guy Earl Ingersoll and three coworkers. The four men are in uniforms and are on a bowling team for their company, the Williams Heating Company. The men are: George Keller, Dean Brodgear, Gilbert Brodgear, J. Gregg and G.E, or "Tex" Ingersoll. Does anyone know anything about this business or the other men in the photo? We are not sure the photo was taken in OR, but think Guy was in OR about this time. It is a great picture. It was recently pulled out of an attic in Maine by one of Guy's very elderly relatives. Guy's family is from Maine and he returned there in the early 1950s, dying in 1957. The Dalles Chronicle, June 2, 2002 A number of guessers had an easy time with last week's mystery photo (above) recognizing it as the legendary Umatilla House near the Columbia (river), visited in the late 1800's by such notables as Ulysses S. Grant. Among the correct guessers were Vera Haney, Bruce Harris, Steve Wray, Pat Arthur, Doug Reid, Kathy Shebley, Lena Wilcox and Terray Harmon, who said he had one of the Umatilla House's barstools in his living room. Sherry Waddington was able to up the ante, mentioning she bought the former house of Joseph G. Wilson in 1979, with a bannister, bride's mirror and deck chairs from the fabled hostelry. The Dalles Chronicle, June 2, 2002 Looking Back is assembled weekly from the files of The Chronicle by Elroy King and Elly Marx. 20 Years Ago, June 2, 1982 A 30-day residency requirement in order to vote in Oregon conflicts with the U.S. Constitution and the Antelope (Oregon) disincorporation election of April stands. Wasco County Circuit Court Judge John Jelderks Tuesday afternoon said that the U.S. Supreme Court in 1972 had laid the foundation for this ruling when it threw out residency requirements in a Tennessee case. A group of Wasco County residents have chartered a Citizens Posse Comitatus and a spokesman said their efforts will be to assure constitutional rights of individuals are protected. Spokesman LaMont Jones of The Dalles noted the posse draws its power from the federal constitution, that the local group would fight its battle over rights through the courts and would help individuals see their rights are protected. Mark Steinberg was the overall men's division winner and Traci KaHoe the women's division champion of the Lyle (Washington) Pioneer Day's 7.2 mile road race held Sunday. 60 Years Ago, June 2, 1942 What to do in an air raid: 1.) In any air raid or backlut, take cover immediately. If you are away from home, get off the street. If you are at home, take immediate blackout precautions. 2.) Don't use the telephone. Remember those persons who have been trained to protect you. Your personal calls have got to wait until the all-clear signal. 3.) If you are caught in the open, lay on your stomach. 4.) If incendiary bombs fall, play a course spray of water on them. Put out the fires started by the incendiaries first, then devote your attention to the bomb. 5.) Remember obey your air raid warden and other members of the United States citizens defense corps, they are trying to help you. 6.) Above all, keep cool, stay home, put out lights, take shelter, lie down, stay away from windows. You can help. (This has been approved by the civilian protection division of the United States office of civilian defense.) 80 Years Ago, June 2, 1922 Veteran's suicide effort unsuccessful: Strychnine did not work fast enough yesterday afternoon, when Tom Bonner, about 30, attempted to commit suicide in a room in a Bank hotel, with the result that after a thorough pumping out at The Dalles hospital, he is today but slightly the worse for wear. Mis-step on stairs: Mrs. George Marsh, 115 West Third street, suffered a fracture of the right leg above her hankle yesterday when she made a mis-step while going down the stairs at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Foley on Fourth street. She was taken to the local hospital. 100 Years Ago, June 2, 1902 Election at The Dalles: While The Dalles decided by its vote yesterday that Chamberlain was its choice for governor, so it seems did the greater part of the state, for it is conceded now that his plurality will be about 1000, although at last reports Furnish was forging ahead and a dispatch from Multnomah (county) said in twenty four precints the democratic nominee was but 1 ahead; there were, however, ten precincts to hear from. Hello, My 2nd great grandfather, James Cummins, and his third wife had five daughters while living in Calaveras County, CA. His wife, Polly Ann, also had one son from a previous marriage. James deserted Polly Ann and the children in 1867 and moved to Kansas. Polly Ann divorced James and married John Dean a few years later. She then left John and moved to Oregon in 1875 or 1876. Her five daughters and son went with her. Genealogy societies in Douglas and Lane counties have done research for me and provided marriage licenses, death certificates and obits for most of these family members, but I still need more information on one of the daughters, Louisa. Louisa Cummins married in 1881 in Douglas County. According to the marriage license, she married a John Dowell or John McDowell (both names appear on the marriage license and affidavit). I have not been able to find any other information about Louisa. The 1900 census says that Polly Ann had five living children and I know that Louisa's four sisters and her brother all lived well beyond 1900. Therefore I must assume that Louisa died before 1900. The Oregon State Archives has no record of her death and no death certificate was supplied by the genealogical societies that did the research for me. She and her husband may have moved to another county. I have not been able to find any information on a John Dowell or John McDowell that is helpful. Not being that familiar with Oregon research, I am wondering whether anyone can suggest a way to find any to uncover any other information about Louisa (Cummins) Dowell (or McDowell). I would like to know when and where she died and whether she had any children before her death. Thank you for any help you can provide. Ken Tessendorff San Carlos, CA

Sharon: If you have access to the birth records, can you take a look at the surname Thuemler (can also be spelled thumler, thuemmler) Usually only one or two names come up with that surname, but I do have a lot of thuemmlers in Oregon. So rule out Bernard, Evan, Christina, Donald, Dorothy, Wayne, and Ruth. The remaining would be relatives that are unfamiliar to me and those are the ones I am interested in.... May 26, 2002 Looking Back is assembled each week from the files of The Chronicle by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, May 26, 1982 A group called Irate Ratepayers plan to incorporate here and is focusing its attention on rates and operations of the Northern Wasco County's People's Utility District. Eight members raised questions Tuesday night at the PUD meeting. Lee Lathrop, speaking for the group, said that articles of incorporation would be filed shortly. Two city employee groups have voted to accept a wage freeze and a third was still considering that proposal this morning, just minutes before the budget committee was to meet and make a final decision on submitting a levy to voters on the June 29 ballot. City manager Del Cesar said the unions representing firemen city employees had voted by noon to go along with the wage freeze, but the union representing policemen had voted "no". 40 Years Ago, May 26, 1962 A four member board Tuesday night will recount the ballots from the May 7 three district school consolidation election. Wally Kruger and Mrs. Artis Edling from the Chenowith district, William R. Salisbury from Rowena (Oregon) and Earle Molesworth from Mosier (Oregon) will make the re-tally. The recount, ordered by the rural school board on instructions from Secretary of State Howell Appling Jr. after the filing of a request by Everett F. Holcomb of Mosier, was considered a possible preliminary to filing of a petition of contest in circuit court. 60 Years Ago, May 26, 1942 The Dalles much discussed and long-serious grade crossing problem located west of the local tank farms, seemed well on its way toward a solution here today with the announcement of the Public Utility Commissioner Ormand R. Bean at Salem (Oregon) that the Union Pacific Railroad had been ordered to close the crossing and to install a new one 850 feet west of the present one. Explaining that the existing crossing is dangerous and that 52 tasoline trucks are operated over it daily, Bean is quoted by the Associated Press as saying that the new crossing would have much better visibility. Wasco County this morning received formal approval from the War Production Board, Washington, D.C. for the purchase of a county fire truck, it was announced today by Judge J.B. Kirk, who said that arrangements already have been made for the purchase and that the truck will be acquired immediately. 80 Years Ago, May 26, 1922 The second verdict of not guilty to be brought in by a mixed jury at the present term of the Wasco County circuit court last night freed Mrs. Florence Morton Little on a charge of manufacturing intoxicating liquor. The trial was comparatively short, starting yesterday morning and going to the jury at 4:30 o'clock in the afternoon. A verdict was brought in at 9::30 in the evening. Four candidates, Earl Franz and Fred Thomsen of Hood River (Oregon), and Fred Kolt and W.G. Anderson, were initiated into The Dalles lodge No. 303, B.P.O.E. (Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks) last night. Dr. Ben L. Norden of Portland, district deputy exalted ruler of the lodge, was in attendance at last night's meeting. 100 Years Ago, May 26, 1902 It is not surprising that the friends of Mrs. Sarah Horton were surprised to see her on the streets of The Dalles yesterday when but a few days since The Chronicle announced her death. The friend who asked us to mention her demise while regretting the error very much, was happily surprised to find her mistake. Saturday N. Harris disposed of his dry-good store to the Buyers Association and the business will be under the management of Lowit and Wolfe. The former was recently with Bloomingdale of New York and Mr. Wolfe is a brother of Wolfe of the firm Lippman and Wolfe, Portland.
