Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicles Files January 30, 2005 Compiled and edited weekly by Chronicle staff writer Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, January 30, 1985 Five people were named to the Northern Wasco County PUD budget committee by the PUD board at its January meeting Tuesday night. Named to the advisory group were Donna Baldwin, subdivision No. 1; Duane Howell, subdivision No. 2; Barbara Pashek, subdivision No. 3; Hal Howard, subdivision No. 4; and Grant Mead, Dufur, subdivision No. 5. All of the other committee members are from The Dalles. Closure of the hardboard mill at Dee (Oregon) will cost the area a $2.2 million annual payroll, a representative of Champion International said today. The layoffs will begin around February 18 said Eric Beard, public affairs manager for Champions Northwest Division. The Dalles High School principal Rich Correa strongly backs a proposed plan to form a new district for small AAA schools, but D-12 Superintendent Ken Kramer is still a little wary of the plan. The Dalles is among 14 schools from the immediate Portland metro area and the Columbia Gorge that are included in the plan to form the small schools AAA league. 40 Years Ago, January 30, 1965 With high temperatures prevailing in the upper country even higher Friday night at Wicks Reservoir at 1,700 feet, than in The Dalles, melting snow in the Mill Creek Watershed was threatening to send the stream on the rampage again. City Manager C. Dean Smith said all it would take is another warm rain. As the creek continued to rise Friday, sandbagging by city crews were underway at three points: (1) Wicks Reservoir Filter Plant; (2) approaches leading to the bridge to Valle Vista Nursing Home where grade was washed out in December floods and (3) Mill Creek Trailer Court to keep the stream from overflowing low area. Only one thing is holding up early use of the six acre relocated business district for the city of Arlington (Oregon) and that is clear title to the tracts business people wish to acquire. This was the comment Friday by Mayor Les Grant, who took over duties in this troubled river front city of wheat ranchers and tourists the first of the year. 60 Years Ago, January 30, 1945 City police and firemen today were investigating the circumstances of a blaze that did more than $3,000 damage to the house and furnishing owned by Mrs. Flora Bonney, 319 E. Seventh Street this morning. Treated at The Dalles hospital for a severe arm wound and loss of blood was Poe Mixon, 28, an engineer for the Russell Towboat and Moorage company. Mixon admitted, by questioning by city police this morning, that he started the fire, then dove head first through a large front window to get out of the burning dwelling. 80 Years Ago, January 30, 1925 Wallace L. Gibson is under arrest and an unknown liquor dealer is sought today as the result of an unusual seizure last night by Sheriff Levi Chrisman, in cooperation with federal authorities. Gibson is the seventh man to be arrested by county and federal officers since January 1 on liquor charges. Five gallons of whiskey and an automobile were seized by authorities in the raid which led to Gibsons apprehension. Following the recommendation of Governor Pierce, the joint ways and means committee introduced a bill in the house today which would appropriate $1,500,000 of soldiers bonus sinking funds for the relief of eastern Oregon wheat farmers. The money would be available for loans to help to reseed wheat areas where the coming crop was destroyed by cold weather. An effort was made to pass the bill through under suspension of rules, but this was abandoned when opposition developed. 100 Years Ago, January 30, 1905 Joseph Allen closed a big land deal yesterday evening with Joseph Peters and C.W. Emerson of The Dalles. The land sold was a tract belonging to Lesley Matlock of this city, consisting of 2520 acres down in what is known as the sand country. The price was $6.50 per acre and is considered very cheap. Morrow county lands are rapidly increasing in value and the people who are buying now are making good investments HEPPNER GAZETTE Stockholders of the British Columbia Land and Oil Company held their first meeting Saturday evening and elected directors as follows: F.F. Gunning, N. Whealdon, C.W. Emerson, W.D. Richards, S.R. Brooks, E. Kurtz, F. Menefee. Officers were then elected. F.S. Gunning, president; N. Whealdon, vice president; E. Kurtz, treasurer; J.A. Douthit, secretary. Menefee and Wilson were chosen as attorneys for the company. The Dalles Chronicle January 23, 2005 page A5 Brickyards and masons were vital part of early The Dalles [The following article appeared in The Dalles Optimist on May 24, 1962, one of a series of articles by local historian Howard McNeal. McNeal was the author of a history of The Dalles, completed in 1953.] Junior High Brickyard The Junior High School brickyard, according to Hans Blaser, was located on about 14th and I streets, where the school is now located. They hauled clay from Clay Hill and many other locations to those kilns. The bricks for the little brick house in the 1300 block of 12th Street came from that brickyard. The owners and operators of that yard are not known. Roy Johnson recalled a small brickyared (sic) at 10th and Federal about 1900, but not the owners name. Max Blank Brickyard The Max Blank brickyard, according to Jacob Scherrer, was located on East 8th Street, at the head of 4th Street grade, near the old Laughlin home. As recently related in the papers, Max Blank was the contractor and builder of St. Marys Academy in 1882 for $24,000, which is now being torn down. He was the uncle of Fred Christian, well-like The Dalles plumber who always said, My uncle Max Blank built St. Marys Academy. Brick Costs Paul Weigelt, of the Weigelt Bros. Book Store, whose father Albert (1864-1941) was a pioneer bricklayer and stonemason of The Dalles for 50 years, said, When father came here in 1891, bricks sold for $50 per 1,000 or œ cent each! Father would order 10,000 bricks for a house (30X30) and they would cost only $500! Labor was only $1.50 per day and meals 15 cents. It was cheaper to build a house of bricks, in those days, than out of lumber! After 1910 came the concrete building construction period in The Dalles, which lasted about 20 years until hollow tile became popular in the 1930s. Brick and tile houses are today cheaper to construct than those of lumber! Alber (sic) Weigelt worked on every masonry building in The Dalles for nearly 40 years. Charlie Garrett Charlie Garrett, father of Mrs. George Wagenblast, was another pioneer brick mason who came to The Dalles in 1903. He worked on the construction of Hotel Dalles in 1910, which was the last building put up from bricks from local yards. The Broff Bros. John, Joe and Al were the contractors. C.M. Zell and Joe Stadelman hauled brick to the job. Mr. Garrett was forman (sic) of construction on the courthouse at 5th and Washington in 1915. He worked on the IOOF Hall in 1904 and the Elks Lodge in 1911 and many more of the leser (sic) buildings of that period. The family moved to Salem (Oregon) in 1915. We have always had great admiration for the workmanship and skill of old Civil War veterans masons who did the rip rap work on many of our street, one of the best samples being at the head of Brewery Grade. No cement was used to hold the rocks together in those walls which have stood the test of time for more than 80 years! The United Mills building is the best example of concrete construction from 1911. Since 1910, bricks for construction have all come out of Portland. Bricks now cost 7 cents each as against œ cent each in pioneer days. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicles Files Looking Back is researched and compiled each week by Elroy King January 23, 2005 20 Years Ago, January 23, 1985 Bonneville Power Administrator Peter T. Johnson will be the keynote speaker at a January 30 ceremony dedicating new equipment that upgrades Pacific Northwest-Southwest Intertie, one of the worlds longest high voltage direct-current transmission lines. The new equipment was installed last November at BPAs Celilo Converter Station in The Dalles and 846 miles south at the Los Angeles Water and Powers Sylmar Station near Los Angeles (California). Two students at The Dalles High School have been nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy. Congressman Bob Smith has announced that Craig Aird and Kevin Paschal are among his 14 nominations. 40 Years Ago, January 23, 1965 Further questioning of four youth has linked them with additional burglaries, apparently leaving only three of the recent 16 break-ins unsolved, authorities said Saturday. Brought back from Portland Friday by Sheriff Sterling Trent and City Detective Ernie Brock was the fourth boy, age 16, who was not apprehended at the time the other three were arrested. All are now in the Wasco County Jail. 60 Years Ago, January 23, 1945 Officers for the ensuing year were elected by directors of The Dalles Chamber of Commerce. Re-elected president was Vern E. Rolfe, Vice presidents are Frances Seufert and L.G. Kelly. M.M. Donnell was elected treasurer and W.S. Nelson was named manager. Installation ceremonies for the Encampment branch of the Odd Fellows were held last evening at the Odd Fellows Hall, when several car loads of members from Dufur (Oregon) were here to attend the gathering. N.A. Novak was installed as chief patriarch; C.H. Crofoot, high priest; L.J. Harvey, senior warden; R.A. Ward, junior warden; F.M. Sexton, scribe; J.W. Farlow, treasurer; F.J. Spagle, guide; George Powell, inside sentinel; Harold Earls, first watch; James A. Underhill, second watch; Clarence Gardiner, third watch; Harold Jones, fourth watch; Gus Weigalt, first guardian of the trust; and Anton Paulsen, second guardian of the trust. 80 Years Ago, January 23, 1925 H.L. and E.L. Eddins, formerly of Lewiston, Idaho, will handle the Ford agency in this district it was learned today when they acquired a lease to the building formerly occupied by the Gannett Motor company at 515 E. Second Street. The new concern has purchased all of the Ford stock on hand of the Gannett Motor company, including parts and equipment and are expected to open for business within a few days. 100 Years Ago, January 23, 1904 Detective Fitzgerald arrived from Portland last night on No. 4 to examine the men held as suspects in the train holdup. Marshal Wood took them to the train that Lewis, the Pullman car conductor, might pass judgment as to their identity. He could not identify them and from all indications the detective decided the wrong men were in custody. Stronp was therefore discharged, but his partner held under suspicion of being a deserter. BIG VALLEY GAZETTE BIEBER, LASSEN COUNTY, CAL. WEDNESDAY, JULY 6, 1904 VERDICT AGAIN SET ASIDE Judge Bellinger of the United States court at Portland has set aside the second verdict in the famous suit of Birdie McCarthy, the Michigan school teacher, who charges James Heryford, a prominent Lake County (Oregon) stockman, with tampering with her affections to the extent of a large share of his fortune, which she is now seeking to get judgement for in the court in question. In the first trial, the jury gave Miss McCarthy a verdict for $22,500. This was deemed excessive and that unless Miss McCarthy will agree to accept $6,000, he will order a new trial, or if Heryford should decline to pay the $6,000, he will allow the second verdict of $10,000 to stand.
