    3. History Mystery Photo The Dalles Chronicle March 20, 2005 (Text Only) A lot of people recognized last week’s picture as The Dalles first Cherry Queen, Helen Spickerman Elton, and her court, Betty Martin and Lillian Phare. The 1940 Cherry Queen pageant was a one-time phenomenon. Plans for an annual event were interrupted by World War II, and a Cherry Princess did not become an annual event until the 1970’s. Bill Elton was kind enough to provide the information and photos. “I know her well,” he said. “I’ve been married to her for 62 years.” The event was a production of the long-defunct Breakfast Club that was once a strong civic voice in The Dalles. Cathy Elton wrote: “The mystery queen is my mother-in-law, Helen Spickerman-Elton and she is still a queen to our family.” Holli Elton added: “Her majesty, historically speaking, is my beautiful grandmother, Helen Marie (Spickerman) Elton.” Written permission to reprint given by The Dalles Chronicle, The Dalles, Oregon Copied and submitted by Earline Wasser Member of Columbia Gorge Genealogical Society c/o The Dalles/Wasco County Public Library 722 Court Street The Dalles, Oregon 97058 http://community.gorge.net/genealogy [Note: new website address] Browse http://historysavers.com/orwasco/ recently updated information regarding Wasco County - Links are at the bottom of page The Dalles Chronicle http://www.thedalleschronicle.com/ http://searches.rootsweb.com/ "Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds you plant." 3. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through the Chronicle’s Files The Dalles Chronicle March 20, 2005 Researched and compiled each week by Elroy King of The Chronicle’s news staff. 20 Years Ago, March 20, 1985 Two former The Dalles high school baseball players are playing big roles on this year’s University of Portland team which has jumped out to a 6-0 record. Larry Melton, a senior, is 3-0 on the mound for the Pilots. Mark Beaton, a sophomore, is the starting first baseman for the Pilots. So far he is hitting .533 (8 for 15) with three doubles and three runs batted in. 40 Years Ago, March 20, 1965 Wasco County soon will build a wooden bridge over Fifteenmile Creek near Petersburg School to plug a road gap until the longer permanent span, now in the planning stage, is completed. Work can begin as soon as the county gets right of way easements, said County Engineer C.D. (Cotton) Light. The trestle type bridge will have part of a washed out upstream bridge for one of its sections. A graduate engineer from the San Francisco Bay [California] area will arrive April 1 to take over the duties as Hood River County’s first county manager, announced Commission Chairman Percy Bucklin. Alex E. Almerants is the city manager of Mill Valley [California], holding that position since 1948 in the San Francisco bay area on the mainland. The formal opening of the golf season for women at The Dalles Country Club this past week was marked by the end of the Winter Ladder tourney. Mrs. Richard Hazelton won the trophy and Mrs. Joe Hillis finished in second with Mrs. R.R. Beasley coming in third. 60 Years Ago, March 20, 1945 The last benefit card party of the season in the series sponsored by the women of the Harmony Club of the Cherry Park Grange was held Saturday evening at the country home of Mr. and Mrs. Mel Runyan on Upper Three Mile. 80 Years Ago, March 20, 1925 Malcolm Adelbert Moody, 70 years old, member of Congress from Oregon 1898 to 1904, and for many years prominently identified with the development of The Dalles and Wasco county, died at 11:30 o’clock last night at the Good Samaritan hospital in Portland. Mr. Moody has been ailing in health for the last several years, but was not stricken with the illness that resulted in his death until several weeks ago. He has been very low at the Portland hospital for more than a week. William Armstrong, accused by Ira Cramblet of being the man who fired a shot at him early last Monday morning, was to have a hearing in the justice court before Henry Meredith this afternoon. Witnesses for both sides were sought this morning. Cramblet was wounded in the chest by a bullet allegedly to have been fired from Armstrong’s home. 100 Years Ago, March 20, 1905 Another Dalles church is to lose its minister soon. Reverend William Brenner of the Lutheran Church, having accepted a call to a church in South Bend, Indiana, and is preparing to leave shortly after Easter. He tells us his intention is to take a special course in the Lutheran seminary in Chicago (Illinois) in connection with his regular work. A new pastor will be appointed to the church here. 3. The Union Democrat Sonora, Tuolumne Co., CA Saturday, 7 Oct 1854 [WARNING: This issue contains graphic material, not suitable for reading by children] **INDIAN OUTRAGE -- The following letter, published in the Oregonian (Portland, O.T.), gives a detailed account of the late massacre of immigrants in the vicinity of Fort Boise, by the Shoshonees, or Snake Indians. The writer, John F. NOBLE, was on his return, by the overland route, from a visit to the Atlantic States: On the morning of the 22nd of August last, a party of 18 men left Fort Boise, for the purpose of rescuing 3 ladies and a number of children, who were supposed to be in the hand of a party of “Winnass” Indians, (one of the small tribes of Snakes, who live on Boise river), who attacked Mr. Alexander WARD’s train, from Missouri, on the 26th of August, about 25 miles above Fort Boise, on the south side of Boise river. This party, on arriving at the place where the first attack was made, found the bodies of Alexander WARD, and Robert, his oldest son, Samuel Mulligan, Charles ADAMS, William BABCOCK and a German whose name is unknown. Following the trail, for about 300 yards, the body of young AMON was found -- a lad of 17 years of age. He was 1 of 7 who came to the rescue, on the day of the attack, with William YANTIS. This young man fought with great valor, pursuing the Indians to the bushes, where he was killed. About 100 yards farther on, the body of Miss WARD was found, having been shot through the head with a musket-ball. Her body was much bruised, her hand showing signs of a desperate fight in resisting off the fiendish attempts of the [illeg] violate her youthful person. The marks of [illeg] were plainly indented upon her left cheek; [illeg] a hot piece of iron had been thrust into her person, doubtless whist alive, as a punishment for her resistance. About 50 yards farther on, in the brush, 3 wagons were burned. The trail was followed up, and in about 600 yards the body of Mrs. WHITE was found, stripped of her clothing, and scalped. Her head was beaten in by clubs, and also a musket-ball had passed through her head. Her person showed signs of the most brutal violence. In about 30 yards farther, upon the north bank of the river, their place of encampment was discovered. It consisted of 16 lodges, made of willow bushes. Here the bodies of Mrs. WARD and 3 children were found. Mrs. WARD was lying in the encampment, in front of the fire. Her body had been robbed of all its covering, and was much cut and scarred by bruises. Her face had a deep wound, inflicted by a tomahawk, which probably caused her death. The children were lying upon the fire, in front of her, having evidently been burned alive, as a portion of the hair still remained upon their heads, showing they had been held by the hair until they were burned to death, in front of their mother, and she doubtless was compelled to witness the horrid barbarity. She was soon to give birth to another child, which rendered the sight still more shocking. Several parts of limbs were picked up at some distance from the fire, having been dragged away by the wolves, or the Indian dogs; for several had been left in camp by them. Two of the witnesses at the trial against Snyder, a full-blooded Indian named William ACUSTA, and a quarter-breed named Frank DAMPLER, are now locked up in jail on the charge of perjury, alleged to have been committed during the trial. They swore that on the streets of Ashland, Oregon, on July 12, 1903, while standing talking to Snyder, Potter, the man whom Snyder killed, passed by, and that Snyder pointed to him and said "There goes the man I am after, and I will get him yet." Snyder says he has positive proof that he was not in Ashland on that date and he swore to a charge of perjury against them. Potter was a friend of the Indians. They will be vigorously prosecuted. 1. Indian Attack Upon Emigrants The Union Democrat Sept. 1854
    2. Earline Wasser
    3. The Union Democrat Sonora, Tuolumne Co., CA Saturday, 16 Sept 1854 LETTER FROM OREGON -- The Pacific Mail Steamship Company's steamer Columbia, Capt. DALL, arrived at San Francisco on the 11th inst., from Portland and intermediate ports. We extract from the papers received the following intelligence: *INDIAN ATTACK UPON EMIGRANTS -- The Portland Standard learns, by express from Fort Boise, the particulars of a horrible massacre by the Indians. They are as follows: On the 25th of August, about daylight, as an emigrant train of 4 wagons were passing along, some 15 miles on the east side of Fort Boise, a force of about 60 Indians attacked them. The men of the party were so appalled at the attack, that, although they (the men) were armed, they made but a feeble resistance, and the whole of them, 8 in number, were shot down; a boy was also shot down and left for dead. The Indians then seized the women, 4 in number, and some children, number not known, together with the wagons and stock and made their retreat from the road. After they had departed, the boy, who was only wounded, came to himself and made his escape. John F. NOBLE, a man well known in Oregon, was in a train behind, and in coming up found the boy, and hastened on to Humason's Camp, about 15 miles this side the fort, and from there Mr. FRUIT, a brother of James H. FRUIT, came through to the Dalles as messenger, with a request from the Indian Agent, THOMPSON, for troops. Major HALLER started yesterday with his command, about 30 men, from the Dalles, to the scene of the action. Nathan OLNEY, the member elect from Wasco, is mustering a volunteer force to follow the regulars. A requisition is also made for troops from Vancouver, and the company of artillery stationed there, numbering about 70 men, will go up on the Belle tomorrow. Rumors are current at the Dalles that the attacking party are the Blackfeet and Snake Indians combined. Mr. FRUIT states that on his way from Humason's Camp, he passed about 400 emigrant wagons, on their way to the Dalles.
