Ancestry has opened up it's World War 1 Draft Registration records for visitors of Access Genealogy for free. This will cover a 14 day period between July 4 - July 17 2005. The only thing required to view the records is an email address and your name. No credit card required! This is not a 14 day trial of all of their material. It is strictly limited to their World War 1 Draft Registration images. http://www.accessgenealogy.com/ In 1917 and 1918, approximately 24 million men living in the United States completed a World War I draft registration card. These registration cards represent approximately 98% of the men under the age of 46. The total U.S. population in 1917-1918 was about 100 million individuals. In other words, close to 25% of the total population is represented in these records. The WWI draft registration cards database can be an extremely useful resource because it covers a significant portion of the U.S. male population in the early twentieth-century. If you had family in the United States during WWI, you are likely to find at least one relative's information within this large collection. In addition, these cards contain more than just names and dates; they contain significant genealogical information such as birthplace, citizenship status, and information on the individual's nearest relative. In general, the registration cards included the following information Full name Home address Date and place of birth Age, race, and country of citizenship Occupation and employer Physical description (hair and eye color, height, disabilities) Additional information such as address of nearest relative, dependent relatives, marital status, father's birthplace, or previous exemption from service Signature. http://www.accessgenealogy.com/ Direct url: http://www.accessgenealogy.com/military/ww1/draft.htm Please feel free to pass this information on to others!! The project is a viable one, lots of people like to post their efforts on the great web. How ever some of the topics seems to be off Oregon and just to this site and the how to's of it. I think it is a fine line on the topic of Oregon graves and how to use a website. Might be better to have full instructions on the site in great detail so people are not confused and spare the list that part of the topics. I know about how to put pictures on sites, maybe resizing or the pic tag could be critical, but it don't have to be. I post my pictures in a larger size, but use a pixel display so they look like thumbnails, but right clicking and saving gets you a bigger picture worth viewing and a faster web page transfer with out sacrificing the size of the pic. PS David, it is not up to you to tell my members what to delete thanks. Nikki, Don't like something that is genealogy you consider to be a waste of YOUR time? Use delete button on your keyboard. And there have been FEW of Oregon messages. Got reply from programmer... No tiff's are not accepted. PHP does not have any tools for converting tiff photos. The GPP can accept jpeg, gif and png. All get converted to jpeg's for storage though because it works the best for these types of photos. Tiff files will have to be converted prior to upload. In addition tiff files are usually huge so it would benefit the crontributor to convert it anyway. The upload file size would probably be reduced to about 1/10th of the original size. --- So, the TIFFs have to be converted to jpeg (jpg), gif or png before you can upload. The best software I've found to handle this is ScanSoft's PaperPort. David Samuelsen

If you see she said she was trying to get photo TO THE SITE, that is not downloading, that is uploading. Downloading = incoming to the home computer Uploading = sending out to the site from the computer David Samuelsen Dan M wrote: > It was assumed she was mentioning > * downloading* from the site , > I did not see * uploading mentioned* > > > Dan M > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "W David Samuelsen" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Friday, July 01, 2005 12:14 AM > Subject: Re: [OREGON] Downloading pix > > > >>she is not trying to do that, she is trying to upload to the >>oregongravestones.org site. Am awaiting reply from programmer concerning any format other than JPG... However, any size you try to upload will automatically be resized to 450x pixel width / x450 pixel height, whichever is greater no matter what. So it is best you crop your photos before you upload, to get rid of all the excess around the gravemarker because readability is very important. The how to use this graves site is not necessarily Oregon-L topics. Thanks Dan Matney

Hi Karla, I don't know if you are sending your photos in TIFF or JPG, but photos done in TIFF take longer than JPG. I have waited sometimes half an hour for a single photo in TIFF. The good side is that you don't have to sit at the computer while you're waiting. You can turn your back to the computer and do other work during the wait. Generally, TIFF turns out a clearer picture than JPG. she is not trying to do that, she is trying to upload to the oregongravestones.org site. I laid out the steps to do that. The photos in oregongravestones.org site arent even more than 50kb and should not take long to save to one's own computer (less than 30 seconds at the best). You can't download to the site. You have to UPload. submit a photo "browse", this will check your computer where you keep your images of photos. select the photo submit the next round is editing if necessary. submit select county select correct cemetery click if you don't want anyone to contact you by email click if you don't want to be bothered with notification that photo is uploaded and assigned ID number enter information in appropriate boxes (first box for surname, middle for given names, last box for maiden surnames) click submit David Samuelsen Karlena wrote: > At 02:05 PM 6/30/2005, you wrote: > Hi, > > I have been attempting to download some photos to this website.
