Dan, I don't think that it has lost its fervor. In fact, I think I have made posts that inadvertently went to the individual instead of the group. I am researching Oregon almost everyday! My latest question is on the Bancroft Lists. Where can I find these? I just found out about them and found an index, but was really hoping to see the information that is included in its entirety. Can anyone help with this? Ali
Vicki: Thanks for the tidbit of information. I'll see what I can locate - it is often this sort of 'tip' that finds things for me. I have found the name spelled so many different ways it is almost unreal - at one time in history it did start with a K. And I find these people in the most unusual places. I live in Oklahoma and for the most part the ancestors were in WA, OR, CA, TX, AZ, NM, UT, ID,NV, IA, MO, AR, KS (tons of them in OR). But low and behold I found the wife and daughter of one buried in the SE part of OK just this past month. She had remarried (4 times) and somehow managed to get to OK circa 1900 - we didn't have railroads in that part of the country until the early 1920s. Again, my appreciation. Liz, Everytime I've seen your posts concerning your Casner/Carsner/Carsoner family I am reminded of a woman from my childhood. I finally decided to mention her to you 'just in case' it could eventually lead you to more information. I grew up in Roseburg, Douglas County, OR in the 1950's. My mother had made friends with an elderly woman who lived up on the corner. I don't know whether she was new to the area or not. But, everyone knew everyone in the little neighborhood. And, the lady was new to me, so it was possible that she just moved there maybe as a widow or to be closer to her family or 'downsizing from a farm', who knows? This neighborhood itself goes back to the early railroad days, and is now on the historical registry. Anyway, the little elderly lady's name was (my pronunciation) "Mrs. Kesner". When I say, 'my pronunciation', I mean I had no way of knowing how her name was spelled, that's just what I was told to call her. So... could be a lead for you. 1950's - Douglas County, OR ... she looked to be maybe in her 70's or 80's to me. Not sure what that would translate outside of a child's eyes. LOL! Sorry I can't be of more help. Blessings! Hello Listers, I have a data base of 47,500 individuals of Scottish descent, some of whom eventually settled in Oregon beginning about 1880. Most first emigrated to Nova Scotia about 1828, then to Ontario about 1851, then to the western provinces and states about 1880. In the past two years I have found MacIntosh descendants in Coos Bay/North Bend, MacLeod and Hunter in The Dalles, Urquhart in The Dalles and Moro, MacColl in Portland. Morrison, MacKenzie, MacAulay, Anderson, Arnold, MacColl, MacQuarrie, Sutherland, and Urquhart in Washington. I would be happy to help anyone researching these names or other Scottish surnames. Maybe rather than just do people, we could do History of certain Oregon Interesting places. I was reading an article at the State library about a town called Matney and Matney flats, Matney post office etc, I want to learn more about places that used to exhist also. Up the Santiam towards Detroit there used to be some places, like Niagra and some others, My dad and family worked a sawmill up there in the 1800's sometime. I just wonder who all could provide some ( Oregon * stories ? I have Matney - Rogers - Cooper - Penrose - Mainly doing Matney, the rest seem to follow, My Dads first marriage was to Silvia Weesley of Scio, our family moved around in those days, Brownsville, Kings Valley, well you know the circuit , people just moved all over the place <G> Dan Matney ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elizabeth Freeman" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, July 11, 2005 8:22 AM Subject: Re: [OREGON] Interesting > Dan: > > Well, sleeping would very well describe many of them. Dan: Well, sleeping would very well describe many of them. Perhaps many people are like me and they have come up to a brick wall so big they haven't figured out to get beyond it. well, I won't be wearing old pioneer clothes since I ain't got none. :-) Just old clothes. If you need a ride or something to the picnic, let me know. I don't remember how far away you are, but I have nothing else scheduled for Sunday and it doesn't start until 1. I too would like to meet others on the list since I am new to all the lists. suzanne in Newberg -----Original Message----- From: Dan M [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, July 10, 2005 11:04 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [OREGON] Interesting Hmm, I was wanting to go to that picnic, but if we got to wear old pioneer cloths, well I am lost on that since all I have is work cloths. Yes I would like to go and meet the people behind the mail l;-) I am worse than that on the computer, I have spent whole days, but now since I have to use my time trying to meet bills, I have just mornings and late evenings. Hi Dan, I can't speak for anyone but me but we've been prepping for a visit from Dennis and spending a lot of time on the Ancestry WWI lists gaining what I can get while I can get it. After things settle down I'll be looking for some more Worthington's and the elusive Margaret Worthington Duda. Dan I'm not sure about everyone else, but I have gardening to do. I've found that if I start with the research, the next thing I know its 4 hours later and my chores are not done. I still watch the lists and am planning on attending the SDOP picnic next weekend. suzanne in Newberg. -----Original Message----- From: Dan M [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, July 10, 2005 9:29 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [OREGON] Interesting We have all these lists on RW and I am either owner/manager or member of a great many lists, seems they are all just sleeping mostly. Her obit could of been either in the Redmond Spokesman or The Bend Bulliton
I sent email regarding death of Agatha Bateham. I found her obit so do not need help.
The SS Death Index shows Agatha Bateham died 10 Nov 2004. Her last residence was in Redmond, Deschutes, OR and her last benefit was in Columbia City, Columbia, OR. Can any one help me with where she died? Also, what newspapers might be available for obits in that place? Thanks much from new subscriber. Ginny Toney Houston, TX
Would like to communicate with anyone who might be researching/descendant from the Casner/Carsner/Carsoner line that made their way into Oregon in 1852 arriving there in October (Linn County). The mother took a DLC and raised the six under age children. The grown sons traveled all over the place. One went to BC and Washington and settled in WA. Another roved all over OR, UT, and elsewhere before migrating to AZ along with four others in 1875. Those that remained in the OR spelled the name Carsner; those that went on to AZ spelled the name Casner; and those that were in CA spelled the name Carsoner yet they were all from a family of 11 brothers and 1 sister. The mother, Jincy Jane Fields Casner, sold off the DLC after all the children were grown and goes to AZ in 1875 where she dies in 1884. Still have a few gaps in my information and have to believe there is someone out there who has the answers.
I am wondering if anyone has researched the pioneer KLINGER family near Canby, in Clackamas County. Just wondering which Old Country they came from, and which town. Also, if anyone is interested in seeing the digital images of postcards of the Pea Cannery in Athena, Or., and of Vining Peas in Umitilla County, then let me know, I've just scanned a few in and can forward the images on. Have a great day everyone! Gwen in Boring
Someone on Umatilla Co Anc Boards asked about "proving up' a homestead claim. Her ancestor did not prove up. I posted following with couple of modifications. The Act, which became law on Jan. 1, 1863, allowed anyone to file for a quarter-section of free land (160 acres). The land was yours at the end of five years if you had built a house on it, dug a well, broken (plowed) 10 acres, fenced a specified amount, and actually lived there. Additionally, one could claim a quarter-section of land by "timber culture" (commonly called a "tree claim"). This required that you plant and successfully cultivate 10 acres of timber. Above is a quote from article by Richard Pence. My families had homesteads in Morrow and Sherman Counties in addition to Umatilla Co. I have been on those lands and doubt all claims got water if they had to dig a well, In all cases at least one of the homesteads had a water source,.and some would be difficult to plow 10 acres. not sure how closely the government watched. From stories I have heard, the important things were to live there, have some sort of home and some fence. My families proved up. but they had multiple claimants living next to each other which helped. 160 acres is not enough land to survive in much of Umatilla Co,.
I have been thinking about the Oregon-L ALL Oregon projects should be a topic of this list. Cemetery projects. This also means coaching on how to upload them. More than one person can benifit from those instructions. Any one who does any type of Oregon History;Cemetery; Pioneer; Park or other project is welcome to open topics. Since this is the Main Oregon list We need to have the topics open to all forms of Oregon Items. Any thing like Oregon projects eg Pioneer projects, History, books. Old towns , trails, pioneers and who they were. What ever is Interesting about Oregon, lets open up and fill the list with it. If there is any one here who dont want a lot of Oregon mail ? Then please do not complain as we try to wake things up. I hope every one agrees about my desision. Dan M
Yes, Ancestry does have these records on-line and they are rather interesting, but there are still a few states not yet available, see below. Coming soon: Iowa Louisiana New Jersey Kansas Minnesota Oregon Kentucky Missouri Puerto Rico Gloria Lester >>^. .^<<
