Walkerhouse (or Waakerhoose, to give it the correct Orcadian pronunciation) is in Evie - the main farm in the Woodwick area of Evie. The name is thought to derive from the waulkmill (a mill for 'waulking' or fulling cloth) that once stood in the area. The name is also found in Birsay, and indirectly Orphir (Waulkmill Bay). -- Sigurd Towrie Blackhall - Kirbister - Stromness - Orkney Heritage of Orkney: www.orkneyjar.com Home: sigurd@orkneyjar.com Work: sigurd.towrie@orcadian.co.uk
