Orkney & Shetland, by Wolfgang Schlick. Publisher: Dumont Reiseverlag; (May 1, 2000) ISBN: 3770148428 Since I haven't got my copy yet, I hesitate to say what it's about. I'm sure Wolfgang could better do that, and I'd hate to give the wrong impression because of some assumption I'd made without facts, but, having made that disclaimer, I think it's a guide to the Northern Isles in German. I only found copies available on Amazon Germany (www.Amazon.de) where I experience the fund of trying to order in another language, and hoped I hadn't just bought the whole company. I found used copies from two sellers who then tried to correspond with me in German. Like everything to do with Orkney, it turned in to an adventure. Their is a review, which I also hesitate to quote, since I'm not entirely such what it says, but since there are four stars at the top, I assume it's complimentary, so for anyone who can understand, I include the comments here. Guess I should not be so lazy, and try and translate it. Wolfgang, please speak up and correct anything I (or the reviewer) have gotten wrong. Karen
Thanks Karen. Perhaps this book will deserve an english translation.. Hello Karen, hello Stephen! Actually there were/are two books: Orkney & Shetland - Landscape and Culture of the North (now out of stock, but you might have a good chance to find a copy, if you comb through the second hand bookshops in Heidelberg . :-) ) This one shows more detailed background information about nature and history and culture of both Orkney and Shetland (with a lot of photographs by Charles Tait, Gunnie Moberg and others); it provides some basic tourist information only. and Orkney & Shetland - (A Travellers Pocket Guide) That's the one quotet by Karen more or less focussing on the "musts" for a normal German speaking Tourist (now nearly out of stock). The review is ok - it says too much about history, archaeology and culture, a bit more about nature would have been nice, and some of the pics are too small. That's correct. I was sitting over my last corrections when the Heart of Neolithic Orkney was designated as World Heritage Site - so we kicked off some general information, threw some stuff over board like one section about "Diving the German Fleet in Scapa"), reduced pics in number and size to win more space for actual information and added a lot of details concerning HNO to various chapters . the whole stuff was then printed just 2 month before the high season started in 2000 . :-) To get an impression - look at: http://northernisles.schottlandportal.de and click on Orkney . but the site is due to be redesigned . and will probably reopened as part of the new site www.schottlandportal.de I have under construction tigether with some German / German-Scottish / Scottish-German and Scottish friends ... :-) Wolfgang

According to BabelFish this translates to "With 240 sides only over the Orkney and Shetland islands this travel guide offers more than most larger its kind, which only "nebenbei" the islands; (in the context of Scotland) discuss. The Author exhibits detailed knowledge of the islands and their inhabitants, which "Kleingedruckten" themselves v.a. in; show, in which the most important localspecific travel references are given. Egg in its descriptions sets emphasis on culture history; personally the sections over nature and landscape, climate and ecology somewhat too meagerly failed me. Also those relatively few, partly photos quite small turned out reduce something the very positive impression of the book. But it is also no book of pictures, but a travel guide."
