I read about all their beers and it's got my mouth watering already. I especially liked their list of who in Orkney has the stuff on draft. The problem I found with Orkney Brewery and Raven Ale was that no one in Orkney seemed to like Raven, and it was nearly impossible to find. They told me they sent most of it south. The Barony Hotel used to have it on draft, coming out of a wonderful raven shaped tap, but then they dropped it. A couple of visits ago I arrived and went straightaway to Orkney Brewery and bought a cask of it which we set up behind the house (Odin) and we could nip out anytime, fill a jug and enjoy. You can be sure we'll be trying several of the new ones, and the originals as well. Also, there was a link to the scallop and lobster outfit, which sounds like a rival for Orkney Sea Faire, a place we visit often when there. Scooping scallops, oysters (best in the world), cockles (unobtainable here in the states) mussels, and of course lobsters out of huge sea fed tanks a short stone's throw from the sea itself is a real joy and makes for a fine evening. Damn, but I'm getting hungry. Too bad I have to wait so long. The plan is London this August, where I'll be singing with a liturgical choral group in Westminster Abbey, and then Orkney the following summer, back in Odin if we can book it (Olive Taylor, who owns it, seems curiously unavailable at the moment.) If not there, then there are plenty of other fine places to stay. Perhaps we'll see some of you then. His brewery is in the old dairy at Swannay Farm and he brews some excellent beers. It's a dark beer , rather malty, and not too hoppy. But there is also Dark Island to try and Red MacGregor, and my favorite, Raven Ale. We can get several of those here at a place called Zeke's in Dowagiac, Michigan, where they boast about 300 beers on their extensive list. But none taste as good as when sipped before a blazing sunset over the Loch of Harray. I understand there is now a second brewery in Orkney. Can anyone tells us what they know about that?
