My eldest son wants to visit Orkney. He is a lonely planet travel book/guide affectionado, and I have used this guide in cuba, both the la habana city guide and the country wide version. They are great for their detail in things to see, where to stay, and all the do and don't lists. Their maps in the books they produce too are good and practical. It seems however that Lonely Planet haven't dedicated a book as of yet to Orkney. I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for an Orkney guide book as I would like to give one to my son and his wife to "study" before they go there. His normal travel routine is to prepare as much as possible, by simply reading the suggestions of someone who knows the subject, well in advance of the trip. I am normally less disciplined, yet I do now use the Lonely Planet issues often for reference.
That's an easy one - "The Orkney Guide Book" by Charles Tait is without a doubt the only book you'll need! I'd like to recommend Charles Tait's book - far and away the best, with superb photographs and detailed information about everything Orcadian. regards Claire
I'd also recommend it very highly to anyone who actually wants to learn something about the past and present of Orkney rather than to indulge in some sort of romanticised fantasy picture of it. https://www.orcadian.co.uk/acatalog/Orcadian_Bookshop_The_Orkney_Guidebook_159.html It's both attractive, with a multitude of Charles's excellent photographs, and informative.
