All lists need moderators to protect the equanimous (I've never seen that word as an adjective, but it's the word I want) majority of participants. I've been on one unmoderated list serve and one moderated on: both for alumnae of my college. The second, moderated, list exists because ONE PERSON on the original list instigated a witch hunt on a couple of the others, pursuing and chastising them for (imagined) nasty things, making the recipients' lives miserable, as well as the rest of us who were unable to persuade her that she was over the top. The instigator was, and still is, of unsound mind, although a quite intelligent professional person. Her persistent nastiness has made the unmoderated list a quiet backwater... Anne in s.e.
