    3. It's interesting to hear that so much work is being done on the Castle. I still find it a bit surprising that the identity of the new owners hasn't been mentioned in the local press, though maybe I've just missed it. There is a Balfour Castle website at http://www.balfourcastle.co.uk/ on which one can enter one's email address for updates. Apparently tours of the castle are to start in May, which obviously isn't very far away now. Some of the rest of the website hasn't been updated and still refers to the Zawadskis as the owners, e.g.: http://www.balfourcastle.co.uk/history.html I wonder how profitable the Castle can be as a hotel? Though the Orkney tourist season is much longer than it used to be, I’d have thought that there would still be quite a bit of the year with very little business. Norman T.

    3. The castle has applied for an alcohol license, though I don't know if that is in the name of the owner or the manager. I suppose in Orkney we are so used to knowing everything that goes on that it does seem a bit strange NOT to know the identity of the new owners. But I believe they are still South, with a manager in situ. Maybe there will be some announcements in the press once they are ready to go for opening. Or maybe they just wish to stay low profile. The hotel may buck the trend if it goes for "high end" and for conferences etc. It's a unique building in a unique location. Let's hope it becomes a success as it would be great for the island, local economy etc. But it is a money pit, no doubt about that..... If I hear any more news on the grapevine I'll pass it along.
