Sue, our postmistress and her mother came over for dinner yesterday (Thursday) and I'm sure she would have mentioned it. Our postoffice is literally just across the road from us and seems to have a steady flow of customers and the monks from Golgotha Monastery send out hundreds of copies of their quarterly magazine via the postoffice. -- Bruce Fletcher Stronsay, Orkney <www.stronsay.co.uk/claremont> "Do you get virgin wool from ugly sheep?"
Sadly the Post Office as a whole is a bit of an anachronism, as explained by Sian. The main hope must be that village shops will survive a bit longer by also being the post office. Just try visiting Dingwall with its 24/7 Tesco - the High Street is either already closed, for sale/rent or run down looking. Then try Alness or Ullapool or wherever without a good supermarket - just fine. And do not think Tescos will not come to Kirkwall as it will eventually. But I really hope that the little shops will still prosper. 1 knot - 1 nautical mile per hour - 6,080 feet. 1 degree of latitude = 60 nautical miles

Yes the decision won't be made (or cynic that I am - published) until that date. But we know we are a borderline case - possibly because the Post Office on Graemsay is being forced to move premices at quite some cost and so discussions have been had with the PO authorities. the Post office is having to move because currently it's in an ancient caravan which is slowly disintegrating and the post office has just changed hands and is hopefully going to be moved to a more accessible and stable location!
