Here in Maryland, there is a Scottish pub called the Royal Mile which serves Dark Island and Skill Splitter. They have Scottish sessions one Sunday each month. Pretty good. --- On Wed, 3/10/10, Tuck <tuck12@comcast.net> wrote: From: Tuck <tuck12@comcast.net> Subject: Re: [ORCADIA] Swannay Brewery wins awards in National Beercompetition To: "Mike Williams" <mike@mistra.co.uk>, orcadia@rootsweb.com Date: Wednesday, March 10, 2010, 9:36 AM Mike, Thanks for the information. I look forward to quaffing some Raven next visit - if I can find it. It seems they sell precious little of it in Orkney but ship all of it south. A couple of visits ago I bought a keg of Raven for our stay at Odin, set it up outside in the back, and we all enjoyed beer whenever we wanted it. Heck of a deal. I also remember the Barony Hotel used to have Raven in a slick looking bar pump which looked like the bird, and it was wonderful. But you just can't seem to get it much anymore. Here in the hinterlands of middle America, we have a small town called Dowgiac, Michigan, and they have a bar called Zeke's which has about 300 kinds of beer (bottles and cans, of course) including Dark Island, Red MacGregor, and Skull Splitter, so I can get a taste of Orkney rather near my house. But I know of no other place in the states with Orkney beer. That's not saying there isn't any, just that I know of no other. The Brewery in Swanney is actually called The Highland Brewing Company Ltd (http://www.highlandbrewingcompany.co.uk/index.shtml). It is owned and run by Rob Hill who used to be the brewer at The Orkney Brewery. I watched the videos from Jayster95 on YouTube, and the part to watch with Orkney [decent lot of footage compared to the other stops] is Season 13, episode 4, part 4. If you watch Part 3, it shows the challenge in the beginning at the very southermost island in England, racing a letter posted to the Royal Mail to a house in Birsay. Episode 4 takes you into Scotland and has more scenery and you see the ferry at John O' Groats. The challenge is ended by about 7 minutes, 45 seconds into the almost 10 minute section. The conclusion was if you want to get a letter from the south of England to the Orkney Islands by the fastest method, buy a stamp...it will arrive before noon the next day even with a racecar as a challenger. I didn't hear how much time they lost by...but it couldn't have been by much. Thanks to Victoria for posting about Jayster95'[s videos and to Karen for her first notice. I really enjoyed this race, as I don't have the channels to watch this on TV...wish my computer could have run it smoothly without all the stops but it was great to see Orkney in the sunshine !!! Anyone know when they actually had this race ? Meg Greenwood --------------------------------------
YOu can also find it on youtube...
