    3. Hi Tuck The local GP practice also dispenses medication. There was concern at the loss of income for the practice if a pharmacy opened up in Dounby, thereby potentially making the Dounby health centre GP practice less viable. The GP practice gets paid by the NHS for acting as a dispensary - quite usual in island or remote location practices. Various other local issues involved too I think. Also local concern as to whether a pharmacy alone would be viable - well it would sell other things like toiletries, over-the-counter medicines, and maybe some household goods too but if IT then closed after a couple of years and the Dounby surgery wasn't able (or there) to take over prescription dispensation again then folk WOULD be left with going to Kirkwall or Stromness. I think the local feeling was - if it ain't broke don't fix it. Sian Tuck wrote: > All, > > I'm very confused here. 3. All, Thanks for the explanation. The piece of the puzzle I did not know was the dispensing surgery, and it's potential loss to competition from a pharmacy. Well explained. I guess the proposers of the pharmacy thought the same way, but their assumptions proved wrong -- as they would have discovered a lot earlier if they had elected to attend the public meeting in the Dounby Centre a year ago. 1. [ORCADIA] ON THE SUBJECT OF SKULLSPLITTER BEER...
    2. stephen davie
    3. HI ORKNEY BUFFS: SO, AFTER A LONG PERIOD OF HIBERNATION, THE OLD SITE POPPED BACK TO LIFE. Much chatter it seems, on the old undying subject of beer, brought to our attention by the ever vigilant Bruce Flecther, the eyes and ears of all things Stronsay Papacita. Very interesting, as indeed so many of the beverages in Orkney are just top drawer. How bout that St. Magnus presentation of a nice old single from Highland Park? I wanted a bottle but it is "sold out!' Alas, I decided to take our local provincial booze pushers (government agencies here) to task, as a result of reading that one of our American friends can acquire the little 8.5% brain tonic, in rural Michigan. Another cited New York state as an active vendor of the controversial label. I recall drinking one of these in the dockside pub at Rousay, and thinking how nice it would be with a good stiff stick of cheddar, or maybe some pickled sweet red peppers and a cracker. The sympathetic receptionist at the special order department here at LCBO Ontario, has agreed to order some for me, and she will call next week to confirm the price. What I am wondering, is what the shelf life is of that brew. If it is something that will last six months without growing a beard or going "off", then I'd be tempted to sorta "stock up." Old Thorfin Skullbasher appears on our family tree, as a grandpa some generations of papa Kolbein's wife, who was Earl Paul Thorfin's granddaughter (possible great granddaughter...hmm). The controversy that irrupted between the free enterprise brewery, and the mindless bureaucrats in the Scottish government who seemed to disavow the point that Skullbasher was a person, not a descriptive noun to describe a beer with 8.5% alcohol. I felt that if that name stripping had gone ahead, that there was grounds for a legal suit from people who can claim family kinship with Skullbasher. So, when I tried to discuss this with my two sons, one of them said.."Dad, if you really want to discuss this....buy a case, and we will sit down with you and discuss it in detail!" Well, the joke will be on them! Question is ....what type of cheese. hmmm Well, so long amigos. I returned from Cuba a few weeks back on business, but hopefully will return there sometime in April, to resume my study of the mango, the tango, and the art of sunbathing on a deserted beach. Yours Aye: Stephen Davie

    3. Hi Tuck, I own a former pub that is now run as a members club. It's the Mistra in Evie. We always have one local ale on usually either Northern Light or Raven. Occasionally one of the others or even something of Rob Hill's. Each member can sign in two guests so pop in and ring the bell if you are passing. The bar is only open on Tuesday, Friday & Saturday evenings. 3. Mike, Thanks for the information. I look forward to quaffing some Raven next visit - if I can find it. It seems they sell precious little of it in Orkney but ship all of it south. A couple of visits ago I bought a keg of Raven for our stay at Odin, set it up outside in the back, and we all enjoyed beer whenever we wanted it. Heck of a deal. I also remember the Barony Hotel used to have Raven in a slick looking bar pump which looked like the bird, and it was wonderful. But you just can't seem to get it much anymore. Here in the hinterlands of middle America, we have a small town called Dowgiac, Michigan, and they have a bar called Zeke's which has about 300 kinds of beer (bottles and cans, of course) including Dark Island, Red MacGregor, and Skull Splitter, so I can get a taste of Orkney rather near my house. But I know of no other place in the states with Orkney beer. That's not saying there isn't any, just that I know of no other.
