    3. I'd also recommend it very highly to anyone who actually wants to learn something about the past and present of Orkney rather than to indulge in some sort of romanticised fantasy picture of it. https://www.orcadian.co.uk/acatalog/Orcadian_Bookshop_The_Orkney_Guidebook_159.html It's both attractive, with a multitude of Charles's excellent photographs, and informative. 3. Hi Marion, Congratulations to your dad with his upcoming birthday. I am about to decide I need to move across the water to your beautiful part of the world. That is if I would not be met with the possibility of being "tarred and feathered" by some I have rubbed the wrong way. :) The discussions here bring back fond memories of when Rootsweb hosted such discussion groups as "Stamp Collecting" and "Golf" just to mention a couple. I am so happy to discover that there is at least one discussion group where interests other than genealogy may be discussed. My ignorance of this fact led to my original response to what I saw when I was granted the honor of administering Orcadia. It will take some pretty rough verbiage for me to even consider doing anything other than just entering into the discussion. And by the way, not all Americans blame BP entirely for the tragedy in the Gulf. Our government shares part of the blame for not enforcing certain standards that seem to have been overlooked and for not being more aware of the overall situation before the explosion. I also feel that certain government agencies here could be doing more to help solve the problem rather than pointing fingers of blame. 3. Unfortunately, the folks who pay the expense of allowing us this free forum have the right to set limits as to what is acceptable and what is not. The administrator is charged with seeing that the rules are enforced. If you were to be required to pay your share of the expense of running the operation you might have an argument as to your freedom not to be censored. The folks who give us this forum can as easily take it away. Freedom is not "free" but has its costs. We pay for this freedom by agreeing to be civil to one another and follow the rules set down by the forum's provider. This is just a fact of life. 3. hmmmm. Ya know, there is a difference between you may feel is "bashing America", and being concerned about various current scientific reports out there, which highlight the distinct possibility that that mis-managed oil may well make it's way to the waters around Orkney, via the North Atlantic drift. The oil issue raised, is not an America problem, nor an American problem entirely, it just happens to be under American control and on waters in American jurisdiction, and the Democratic American President certainly seems determined to do all in his power to help, at this stage of the volatile game. Check out the online maps and charts of the NA drift, and the picture becomes crystal clear. The last such leak (1978 I think) was a Mexican management problem. It had a minimal gulf stream footprint. But this one loombs large, with the potential of a billion gallons of crude to be out there, before they get it stopped. It is already in the gulf stream, and the gulf stream eventually ends up in Orkney, is the point the scientists make. However the variables in the weather and surface winds, make predictions beyond a few days or a week, virtually meaningless. I have read numerous times, of Carribean woods washing up on Orkney beaches. Oil would I am sure, not be as welcome. I regret the manner of our getting acquainted but appreciate a forgiving spirit and look forward to a long and very interesting relationship. Best wishes, Jim
