sorry, but http://www.orcadian.co.uk/reviews answers "File not found!" Is that the reason why I found a lot of adverts on the Orcadian hp but no reviews ... :-)
A couple of new books that might be of interest to list members: "Fine That - an Orkney Island Life" : Julia Welstead's account of her move from Edinburgh to set up home in Sanday. "The Shore and Roond About" : Dave Tinch shares his memories to rekindle memories for some and give younger readers a fascinating insight into living in Orkney 60 years ago. "Landscapes and Desire": An investigation into the history of Britain's 'sexually-inspired' landscapes and monuments. From Orkney's Ring of Brodgar and Maeshowe to 18th-century English pleasure gardens. Reviews for all three are at http://www.orcadian.co.uk/reviews -- Sigurd Towrie Blackhall - Kirbister - Stromness - Orkney Heritage of Orkney: www.orkneyjar.com Home: sigurd@orkneyjar.com Work: sigurd.towrie@orcadian.co.uk
Solved ! Go to www.orcadian.co.uk, then to "bookstore" then to "reviews". Flo

Hello- Recently someone wanting to know about life in Orkney asked about books to read. A friend just brought back from Papay "A Jar of Seed-Corn" by Jocelyn Rendall. The book is a 300-year social history of the farm she now works with her husband, and I can vouch that the 1st 50 pages at least are very readable, with good photos & other illustrations. My family came from Papay but I think the book is more generic than just that particular island. Hope I'm not breaking any rules by listing the price etc below . I have no connection with the author, nor as far as I know am any relation to Wm P L Thomson who wrote a lovely foreword to the book. The ISBN # is : 1 902957 164 10 pounds the price. cheers D Thompson
While trawling through old issues of Old Lore Miscellany (printed 1910'ish) I came across an intriguing eye-witness account of a fairy battle in Birsay - between dwellers of a knowe at Norton and Furse-a-kelda (Fursakeldy). Aside from the fact that this was recorded by a respected 'antiquarian' the fact the 'fairicks' in question bore guns seems to indicate that sightings of such phenomena had as much to do with world-views/fears of the time as it did with tradition/folklore.
