    1. [<orcadia>] "Banking in Orkney"
    2. These are great. I've never found that BBC page before! Thank you. Be sure and go on after the Banking videos, there's some more Orkney down below. It mentions making "Orkney Tweed." I don't recall hearing of this before. Is it still made? Anyone know of any place on line with pictures or other information? Karen

    2. Welcome Bruce. I think you'll enjoy the "off and on" conversations -- of course I'm referring to there sometimes being a lot of mail and at other times a long silence, I wasn't meaning "off" or "on" the subject, which, of course is Orkney, and we never get off topic.....well, we try to not do so. (We really do try). We'll love to hear of your adventures in moving to the place we all love. Happy New Year to you and all the rest out there. Karen English Memphis, Tennessee

    3. I don't mind the site having an extended Christmas vacation. Maybe people are all in that two week phase where you actually try to exercise and work harder the first of January, as a result of some single maltl-induced unachievable New Years resolution. At any rate, I was interested to know how Victor the vole was doing, but apparently grumpy goes to ground for the winter, to conserve food and peat and energy, and wakes up hungry in the spring, sortof like a groundhog. Well, I'm off for the day into the biting cold. Nice "discussing". ... Stephen On Friday, January 9, 2004, at 05:47 AM, Tirabasso wrote: > It's a cool -12 here on the Northcoast of Ohio. 2. Sigurd Towrie
    3. As part of an EU project to develop cultural tourism by using the Icelandic Sagas there is going to be a meeting in Orkney from 22nd to 27th January 2004. Delegates from Shetland, Faroes, Iceland, Greenland, Canada, Norway and Sweden will gather to discuss their projects and to see some of the Norse sites in Orkney. Orkney Heritage, the local authority department which runs the Orkney Islands Council owned museums, will act as hosts. Part of Orkney Heritage's project is the development of an Orkneyinga Saga Trail linking places that appear in Orkney's Orkneyinga Saga. Walkerhouse (or Waakerhoose, to give it the correct Orcadian pronunciation) is in Evie - the main farm in the Woodwick area of Evie. The name is thought to derive from the waulkmill (a mill for 'waulking' or fulling cloth) that once stood in the area. The name is also found in Birsay, and indirectly Orphir (Waulkmill Bay). -- Sigurd Towrie Blackhall - Kirbister - Stromness - Orkney Heritage of Orkney: www.orkneyjar.com Home: sigurd@orkneyjar.com Work: sigurd.towrie@orcadian.co.uk

    1. [<orcadia>] MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM CANADA
    2. stephen davie
    3. AND SO........ TO MY NEW AND CHERISHED FRIENDS ON THIS WONDERFUL WEBSITE, ON THIS MAGIC EVENING AT THIS MYSTICAL TIME OF YEAR, A WARM AND SINCERE MERRY XMAS. I HAVE REALLY THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THE DISCUSSIONS AND THE DIALOGUE WITH MY NEW FACELESS BUT VALUED FRIENDS, ALL BOUND TOGETHER BY CRIMSON BLOOD THAT FLOWED IN THE VEINS OF OUR FOREFATHERS LIVING IN THOSE SPECIAL LITTLE NORTHERN ISLANDS, STILL FROZEN SOMEWHAT IN TIME, AND ISOLATED FROM SO MUCH OF WHAT IS WRONG WITH SO MUCH OF OUR SHRIVELING WORLD. THEY ARE OUR NOT- SO -COMMON DENOMINATOR AND BOND. TO OUR GRACIOUS AND PATIENT HOST, SIG, A BORWICK TO BOOT, I'LL DRINK A TOAST OF THAT GOLDEN ORKNEY DEW TO HONOUR YOUR GOOD DEEDS AND HEALTH. TO THE FAITHFUL SEALS THAT HAVE GUARDED WITH DIGNITY AND GRACE THOSE PRECIOUS FROZEN COASTS, KEEP WELL PERPETUALLY. TO VICTOR THE UNLUCKY VOLE, LIVING IN CONSTANT FEAR OF THE WRATH OF GRUMPY, BURROW DEEP LITTLE FRIEND, TILL SPRING BREEZES ALLOW YOU TO ROAM FREELY IN THE GREAT ORKNEY OUTDOORS. AND AS I BELIEVE IN MY AGING HEART THAT CHRISTMAS WAS WHEN LOVE WAS TRULY BORN, I HOPE THAT IT WILL BE WITH YOU THROUGHOUT ALL THE NEW YEAR, ACCOMPANIED BY GOOD HEALTH AND TRUE HAPPINESS. GOODNIGHT TO ALL, AND THANKYOU: STEPHEN
