Looking from two photos, one from Finstown and one from east of Grimbister, it seems there is a little point of land sticking out into the Bay directly at Holm of Grimbister. I suppose it is in that vicinity. What type of camera do you use? Is it a telephoto digital type? Sigurd, have you used the Fuji "disposable" digitals? I'm in a quandary about what to take to Scotland. Last time I took a regular SLR, too heavy. Now I usually take disposable cameras traveling, my digital is too bulky. I would like to say again how much I enjoy the pictures you and Fiona have shared. They are beautiful and I do so look forward to May when I get out there again. I was looking through some of the past messages on HBC. I just love in info.It does my heart good to know how well the Orkadians worked with the Native Peoples then. I have no direct connections to anyone in Orkney. My greatgrand father is from Scotland and a mixture of Shawnee/ cherokee blood in amongst the European is all I can say. Still it showshow weel real, honest down to earth people can work together when allowed. I would most sincerely appreciate your dad's response. I guess our old Jim Davie would have been know to your Dad. I have a photo of Jim in his house at finstown taken in about 1974. Interesting, and thank you. How far would the "brig' be from Hilda Seators farm (Grimbister Cheese)? I just learned that there is a bridge (my informant calls it a Brig) south of Grimbister, called the Davie Brig. I am interested in knowing if anyone has the history of this "brig" and if there would be a photo of the "brig" and also a photo of the sign identifying the "brig". Alternatively, would anybody be able to give me a heading towards the information? By the way, those pictures were great. In this digitized world we can share so much with a click and a flick. The snow scenes are beautiful. Thank you who have shared them. It makes me think of the winters in Iowa when I was a child. I thought maybe my memories were childhood fantasies and it was never really that pretty, but I think snow really can be as magical as I remember. I know, there are problems too, but to never have that season would not make a better world. In Memphis we have below freezing temperatures, but rarely "real" snow. If there is a little, the white blanket soon turns to gray mush. More often we get sleet and ice which are not fun anywhere. Those who have a winter wonderland, please enjoy it a bit for me. Thanks also Jan and Ann for the tip on "The Yellow in the Broom." My copy has just arrived and I can tell I will enjoy it. Karen
I was just looking at the snow pictures of Orkney, they are beautiful pictures. I love pictures of winter it is my favourite season, and it precedes spring! My family lived in Stromness. It's nearly 20 years since we lived up there but some of the photo's make it seem like yesterday, absolutely loved the place!.
Tremendous potos - many thanks - how deep was the snow? Is the peedie lad in the photos your son? By any chance does he have red hair? Is that a whistle pinned to his jacket? I insist that my wife, Donna hang her whistle around her neck when we roam about the Colorado Mountains, too , and I also carry one at those times. Excellent idea. Jim D
