The microliths were found incorporated into a Bronze Age barrow on top of the mound known as Longhowe. Looking at the geophysics studies of the mound, it looked as if there were signs of "settlement activity" (not structures) further down, which may be related. A more detailed geophys scan will take place over the next few weeks, but the site will have to wait till next year for excavation. 3. I've been hearing tell that microliths, presumably from the mesolithic period, had been found at Mine Howe just recently. There's a small piece in The Scotsman this morning: http://news.scotsman.com/scotland.cfm?id=1018502004 Although I'm a bit confused by the speculation on "mesolithic houses". I suspect there would be a much bigger news story if there was real evidence for mesolithic structures. Am I being too pessimistic, or is it just speculation, or is there some journalistic confusion there? "is this the cliffs of Yesnaby ..." than turning right to Hoy and disappearing somewhere over Scapa Bay and the Pentland Firth ... If not considered of being of general interest, please reply off list to Wolfgang.Schlick@schottlandportal.de ... thx Wolfgang

I guess this 62 year old better start working on getting fit. I am a librarian, not an athlete! Aside from flying over them (did that once), I can't think of a better way of seeing Orkney than on foot. Or over a pint.... Anne

    3. Recieved excellent recommendations for a chap called Hans-Juergen Marter 2 weeks ago. He is a German living in Shetland since 10 years or so and runs there together with his partner the Shetland-News-Agency. He offers walking tours for individuals and small groups in Shetland and Orkney and the Highlands. Recommendations came both from German and British folks who did 5 days Orkney and a week in the Highlands. Just to be prepared: They were young folks (mid 20ies) but highlighted the fact, that you have to be fit, if you are walking with him. :-) He is actually out in the Highlands for 10 days or so. No idea about his rates and conditions. If interested, try to contact him under hans@shetland-news.co.uk .

    3. Fiona - I've been following this mad interest in Orkney also ! Nice to see such an outpouring. Fuels me to go back, but I have to hold myself in check ! Even if airline tickets are free, B&Bs can break the bank. Still....I bet I could find a small room for a week somewhere near the Library ? Still can't shake the thought of a winter visit - seeing the Merry Dancers would certainly make my year ! Well, haven't read your book yet......it ended up in Gil's suitcase. He found it when he got to his second destination in China. Figures he picked it up with his papers on the top of the bed. He returns tomorrow, so I'll be reading it when he leaves for his NEXT trip - on Monday, Aug 16. He'll be gone for a week, this time in the US - he will be driving with a fishing-buddy to visit his parents in Wyoming. Just outside their back door, its only a few feet to a trout stream. Gil needs some R&R, he's considering retiring ! They've offered him a marvellous retirement package....if he takes it, we'll be doing nicely, but it may interfere with my planned winter Orkney trip......we'll work on that. His face is slowly recovering, speech on his call home today was totally normal and he can now raise his left eyebrow. Amazing what gets us excited.... Enjoy your trip ! I'm still on cloud 9 from my week in Kirkwall. Meg ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
