    3. Karen: Your picture of Stromness harbor is uploaded..Great shot..and the colors came out very pretty. Stephen??? You got any of that island you live one? Just as a casual observation over the years, nobody thinks anyone is interested in seeing pictures of the ordinary every day stuff they see around them...and in fact that is what folks from other areas usually are Most interested in. Being an Orkney group,,,those of us lost out here in the outer darkness are interested in almost anything on, in, or under the isles.... Just to keep it an even exchange,,,I can post all the pictures you guys might want of hot dry freeways and ugly tall buildings. You have no idea of her reasons, unless she told you. (It could have been because of the onerous 35+ emails that have crowded into the List over just the past few days ... this can be a bit overwhelming to cull through, and some people just don't have the time to do this kind of constant email deleting.) I might note, too, that the Orkney Communities web site, and The Orcadian and the Orkney Library sites, have great photo sections. There are many places to "view Orkney" on-line, from afar. And I share lots of images with friends via private emailing. - Lisa

    3. I agree with Norman. An "Orcadia Group Photo Album" could very quickly balloon out of even your capable hands, Royce. Especially since: (1) the pix might have to be sent to Royce's email address (if you want this culling headache, have at it!), (2) Many of us would never visit the album, since the reason why we hope for a RootsWeb ORCADIA-list is to (hope to) learn about Orcadian lore, history, stories, music and etc. The effort on your part, Royce -- well, I would not envy you the time it will take you. What really is the purpose of such an photo album? I recognize the social networking aspect, but we can all get to know each other through our own PMs (private mail), and send pix that way. I'm not sure connecting it to the ORCADIA RootsWeb mailing list makes sense. Especially since cacti were never a thing I associated with Orkney? :) Lisa {> on 9/14/07 10:27 AM <} Norman Tulloch wrote -- Royce, I must admit that I have reservations about the Orcadia Group Photo Album. While I'd welcome a photo album concerned with things Orcadian, I think that most of the things that you mention in the list above are quite irrelevant to the remit of the Orcadia list. 1. [ORCADIA] Intrigued with Graemsay?
    2. stephen davie
    3. After reading Sian's postings, and surfing a bit of Graemsay, it seems that the lifestyle there is another succulent slice of unspoiled Orkney. One site suggested a population of 22 souls. Thus if someone there was to deliver triplets, it will amount to an unprecedented population boom. That Dec. ferry video online is a prize to be sure. I think they should charge double on those thrashing days on the basis of the experience...somewhat like a triple length midway ride at a fall fair I was wondering if someone could point me to some online photos that might be airphoto shots of the island, or scenery shots. I remember seeing a big hilly island west of hoy, and another one which was once privately owned. Hard to get a good photo fix, albeit I looked at the map. Nothing like a photo to set it right in the mind. Sian's description of the winter ferry arrangements and the fact that people often stay there for a month at a time, is interesting stuff. That attitude bodes well for a hikers b and b/retreat there. "Stop the Clock...Listen to Nature Sing...Visit Graemsay." Great to be able to hear from ya online Sian. You are a good ambassador for your fair Graemsay isle as Bruce is for Stronsay. Twould be a dream to live a quiet life there... feed the birds, raise a few grouse and highland cattle, and perhaps have a part time job such as being the designated temperature recorder, or the fellow who empties the rain meter and records the fall. Maybe keep a few hens and a noisy rooster too. When they get on your nerves...eat em! Then get new ones in the spring. cheers...stephen

    3. Hi Sian Yes we would be delighted if the Graemsay sites link to OTG. We would also be very pleased if other islands or local sites wish to link to our site because the whole idea is to allow prospective visitors, visitors while they are here and local folk to find out about members' services throughout Orkney. The site is very much aimed at spreading visitors more widely. We are planning our own links section, but this is for the future as we are still developing the existing parts. I have not found the original GMB quotation yet, but I am sure I have it. regards Charles PS I spoke to the master of the Hamnavoe after the trip with the photos and he said it was fine, they did not slow down and the ship was handling very well. If you want a comparison of vessels try some of the newer calmac things like "Isle of Lewis" on a rough day. I suspect that Bruce would be eating his words pretty quickly about the quality of the vessel. Or maybe getting concerned about the rattles, creaks, thumps and bangs. And anyway the NorthLink food is much better.
