    1. [ONTARIO] Searching the 1940 census on April 2, 2012
    2. Karin 'Casey' Corbeil
    3. I've noticed several people question how they can search the 1940 census when it becomes available on April 2. It will not be indexed probably for several months but if want to try and find someone there is a way. Over the last few days I finished putting together the following - suggestions on how to search....FREE...once it is available on April 2, 2012. You don't need to use Ancestry.com. These images will come from the National Archives. You will need at the very least a street name, better yet, a complete address, whether it be from the 1930 census, a directory, or an address closer to the 1940 date such as from World War 2 draft registrations of 1942. Or if you know the ED from the 1930 census you can go here to get the corresponding ED for the 1940 census. http://stevemorse.org/census/unified.html Once you have the address you want to search, go here: http://stevemorse.org/census/ (Steve Morse has produced many handy tools when it comes to census searching....thank you Steve and Joel Weintraub! You can also go through his tutorial at http://stevemorse.org/census/quiz.php) From the drop down lists choose the state and then the city. Then select the street. (Unfortunately I don't think all cities will be available here but currently those with a population of 25,000 or more will be. If your city isn't listed you can still find the ED by going here to see a map of the ED districts http://stevemorse.org/census/xml1940edmaps.html.) If more than one Enumeration District shows, go to the bottom where it says "View present day map" and put in the street number and click on your choice of Google maps, Yahoo or Mapquest. Note the nearest cross streets. Go back to the "street" drop down box and enter each cross street until you have only one Enumeration District showing. It will say in red "The ED you want is....". Right next to it will be "View microfilm". Click on that. This will take you to the National Archive's free access to the 1940 census and the full roll for that census area will be scrollable. Once the census is released on April 2, I will try it and post any changes to these instructions. In the meantime, you can already get prepared by making a list of the addresses that you want to search. Only 33 days to go! Karin Corbeil P.S. As someone else mentioned Kimberly Powell has also put up similar instructions here: http://genealogy.about.com/b/2012/02/28/how-to-find-granddad-in-the-1940-u-s-census.htm And another page with lots of info is Joel Weintraub's https://sites.google.com/site/census1940/ On 2/29/2012 3:00 AM, ontario-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > From: Ellen Murray<ellen.murray@sympatico.ca> > Subject: [ONTARIO] 1940 Census - Karin Corbeil > To:<ontario@rootsweb.com> > Message-ID:<BLU0-SMTP35C1E4CCE56C8822A27BEEF16F0@phx.gbl> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" > > Karin, am also interested in what you have to say about searching the 1940 Census > > Ellen
