James Alexander Michie, b. 1 Apr 1883 in Aberdeen, Scotland, emigrated to Ontario in 1906. He appears in the 1911 census in Hamilton, Ontario. On 28 Aug 1914 he married Mary Drennan Riddell, a 31 year old spinster from Greenock, Scotland. They were married in Wentworth. His 1916 Attestation Papers for the 173rd Battalion Highlanders CEF show him living with Mary at 73 Shaw Street, Hamilton. There is a headstone in the East Flamborough Veterans Cemetery with the name James A. Michie, but no dates. I have written to the Veterans Administration in Ontario, but received no reply. Can anyone suggest what I can do next to find what happened to James and Mary after 1916?

You could check Phone books and City Directories to hunt for their names. Have you tried land records? Once you find out where they lived, you can check abstract indexes to deeds to see if they owned the property, and if so, when they sold or transferred it. See http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/ont/land.shtml for help with Ontario land records What about the 1946 Registration File? They may be in there, depending when they died. See http://naturalizationrecords.com/ and choose CANADA then read about this census substitute. You mention his attestation papers, but did you send for the complete file or did you just view the online images which are for ONE page, front and back? If you didn't get the full file, you should. It can have hundreds of pages (or a few, you never know what will be in it) and sometimes has the former soldier's date of death recorded at a later date. See http://www.rootsweb.com/~canmil/ and choose FIND YOUR MILITARY ANCESTOR from the links provided, to get back to the online CEF database These are just a few ideas for you Lorine -- Lorine McGinnis Schulze * Olive Tree Genealogy (Ships Passenger Lists) http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ * Naturalization Records http://naturalizationrecords.com/ * Images of Ships Lists http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/ otg@csolve.net or olivetreegenealogy@gmail.com
Hi from ancestry there is a James Michie age 20 crossing the border from Toronto going to Boston Mass to visit a Jas McGarry. James was from Scotland and arrived in Montreal Jun 25 1904 aboard the "Manitoba" At the http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/passenger/001045-100.01-e.php input the above and he is on page 11 of 15. The only other thing I can suggest is checking directories for various years. Jackie Coy Harmon wrote: >James Alexander Michie, b. 1 Apr 1883 in Aberdeen, Scotland, emigrated to Ontario in 1906.
