Hi everyone Does anyone know about a Boys Home in Etobicoke? It's in the 1911 census but I can't find a name for the home, just a list of staff and inmates. The head is Chester Ferrier if that is any help. I googled for it but found nothing. Hi Lorine, I took a look at the census and beneath Chester is a Mable Sharpe attendant and it says Mimico School. Perhaps it was associated with or connected to the Mimico Hospital. Hi Lorine also found this article "Smoking was another problem turn-of-the-century child savers like Kelso and institutional officials like Chester Ferrier, the longest serving superintendent of the Victoria Industrial School, linked to boys' deviant character. A careful study of the boys under his charge led Ferrier to believe that tobacco use was overrepresented among delinquent boys. According to the Superintendent, 60 per cent of the inmates of the Victoria Industrial School were smokers.54 Ferrier objected to the use of tobacco by boys since he was convinced it had detrimental effects for what he called their "moral power." Tobacco use was, in his words, "destroying, and making criminals of more of this class of boys than the saloons. It weakens the moral power of the boy, so that the cigarette fiend readily yields to temptation." I could not load or view the .pdf files that came up in searches for Chester (I guess my dialup is just too archaic!) but knowing that the school was called Victoria Industrial School is exactly what I needed My interest is in a 12 year old who was there in 1911 - John Earl Follick aka Vollick. Hopefully I can find more on the school now that I have the name Thank you!
