It is called tintype or ferrotype. Tin plate - those were for licence plates on vehicles. Just as today digital cameras are the thing to have but regular cameras do something that digital doesn't.... negatives that last for years and years. I would imagine that some photographers may still use it from time to time in order to teach or to get a special effect.
