I will be in Toronto next week with a free day to search for two burials and I need some advice about where to look for them My great3grandparents John RUMBLE (bp. 1781) and his wife Mary CLARK (bp.1782) were buried probably in Toronto or York Township, less likely in south-east corner of Vaughan Township. 1. Mary died sometime between 1836 and the 1851 census. 2. In 1851, John age given as 73 yrs, was living with one of his sons on a rented farm near Maple. John is not in 1861 census. *The couple parish assisted to emigrate with seven children, some of whom were married with children, arrived Toronto June 20, 1836 * The family was Primitive Methodist. * They lived first in York Township. A son "resident of York Twp" was married 1837 St. James Cathedral. A daughter "resident of York Twp" was married June 1842 by T.H.M. Barlett St James Cathedral. At least one son was still living York Township in 1850. * Some of John and Mary's family was in Vaughan Twp by 1841 * infant grandson died Sept 1837 buried in Potter's Field. (have been unable to connect the other RUMBLE buried Potters Field to my family) It was more than twenty years before there was another death in this family with the exception of Mary and John. I have checked all on-line sources and have been through the old transcriptions of Ontario cemeteries at Library and Archives Canada. I plan to look the old burials for St. James Cathedral. Where would I find them? Have you other suggestions about where I should look, please? Bonnie
Hi Bonnie I'm wondering whether the following notes based on the 1851 Vaughan Twp census will help you. This household is the one I think you are speaking of. It is one of those households split into two by the way the pages were numbered. Robert Rumble and his father John were not living as far west as you might have expected. With the marital status of John Rumble sr given as "married" I would presume he had not been long widowed in 1851. Vaughan Div 1, folio 69, line 47ff and folio 53, lines 1-5, not found 1861 except for Elias RUMBLE, Robert, 45, farmer, Conc'n 3, lot 15, Methodist, b England & Hannah, 44, b England Mary Ann, 23, b England William, 21, labourer, b England (m 30 Aug 1853 to Ellen BONE of Vaughan) Henry, 14, labourer, b England Edward, 11, labourer, b England Elias, 9, labourer, b Canada (in 1861 age 16, labourer, living with James BOAN & family, p 30, line 3) Hariot, 7, b Canada Mathew, 5, b Canada Margaret Jane, 2, b Canada * John, 73, "working for the above", "married" but wife not present There are 3 other Rumble families in Vaughan: those of Thomas & Emma (Div 4, p 32, line 19ff), William & Mary Ann (Div 2, page 23, line 8ff), & John & Mary (Div 2, page 24, line 13ff -- p 48, line 39ff in 1861) Good luck /cheers Pat Jeffs -----Original Message----- From: ontario-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ontario-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Bonnie Sent: 26 July 2007 14:05 To: ontario@rootsweb.com Subject: [ONTARIO] burials Toronto and York County pre-1861 I will be in Toronto next week with a free day to search for two burials and I need some advice about where to look for them My great3grandparents John RUMBLE (bp. 1781) and his wife Mary CLARK (bp.1782) were buried probably in Toronto or York Township, less likely in south-east corner of Vaughan Township. 1.
