    3. I DO hope the tax was only 5 cents for a photo over 50 cents. Quoting from your page: An act of Congress passed on June 30, 1864 added a new tax on all "photographs, ambrotypes, daguerreotypes or any other sun-pictures" to be paid for by attaching a revenue stamp on the back of the photograph. The tax was set at 2c for a photograph "with a retail value of not over 25c, 3c for a photo costing over 25c but not over 50c; 55c for photos costing over 50c but not over a dollar; and for each additional dollar or fraction of a dollar, another 5c. -- Glen Johnson Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wmjohnson1832 -----Original Message----- From: ontario-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ontario-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Olive Tree Genealogy Sent: July 2, 2007 9:15 AM To: ontario@rootsweb.com Cc: upper-canada@rootsweb.com Subject: [ONTARIO] Dating Early Photos to find ancestors Hello everyone A new Genealogy Section is now online on Olive Tree Genealogy. 3. Thanks for being a great proof-reader and catching my typo! You're absolutely right, the tax on a photo over 50c was 5c :-) Lorine On 2 Jul 2007 at 11:50, Glen Johnson wrote: > I DO hope the tax was only 5 cents for a photo over 50 cents.
