I found the following initials after the groom's name in a 1860 Ontario marriage - M.R.C.S.L.A.K.C. - the first initial could have been an "H". This was shown after the groom's name much like M.D. (Medical Doctor) or J.P. (Justice of the Peace) would be designated. Anyone know what this means? I've tried searching it on the web and have come up with nothing. Family name was GORING and there is a UK Goring family who were Baronets - does it have any connection to a title? Thanks. Steve Marshall
The Royal College of Surgeons of England uses the designation M.R.C.S. It was in existence well before 1860. Perhaps your groom had some connection? Hi Steve MRCS stands for Member of the Royal College of Surgeons, which fits with medical doctor. LAKC might stand for a university or other teaching institution, possibly "London and King's College"--both of which have medical faculties. I wonder if some of the full stops or periods are actually commas. Today we would arrange this as MRCS(LAKC), with or without the full stops depending on standard usage. There weren't that many British universities to choose from in 1860. Then again, KC on its own also stands for King's Counsel. . . . /cheers Pat -----Original Message----- From: ontario-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ontario-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Steve Marshall Sent: Saturday, January 05, 2008 2:05 PM To: ontario@rootsweb.com Subject: [ONTARIO] M.R.C.S.L.A.K.C. - what does it stand for?
