Michigan has some marriage records on line. Check the State of Michigan website and look for vital records somewhere on it. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Dee's Genealogy Sent: Tuesday, April 06, 2010 3:29 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [ONTARIO] Help with what ever is available . . . Hi Listers, I'm at a loss. Been doing genealogy for 20 years, but I'm drawing blanks on what to do with my Fountain/LaFountain older generation. I would love some ideas/suggestions on where to go next and maybe how to clarify what I have. I'm researching Jacob Fountain -until 1900- who then becomes Jacob LaFountain and his wife, Louisa/Louise Hill. I've found him on 1870 census in Marine City, St. Clair, Michigan born about 1845;1880 census in Bay City, Bay, Michigan born about 1842;1900 census in Bay County, Michigan shows him born Sept 1847; 1910 census in Bay county, Michigan shows him born about 1852; 1920 census in Bay City, Bay, Michigan and born about 1845. Jacob died 23 February 1924 at the age of 71 years - which would make him born in Sept 1847 - although he was age 75 in 1920 . . . <G> All census records show Jacob born in French Canada and his parents born in French Canada. 1900 census states that he came to USA in 1868 and he married in 1868. HOWEVER - the birth record of their son William born in 1876 in Marine City, Michigan states that Jacob was born in Lindsey, Canada and Louise in Three Rivers, Canada. Three Rivers is Quebec, BUT Lindsey is in Victoria County. I did find an IGI Family Group Record in Lindsey with Joseph as the father and Elizabeth as the mother and Jacob as one of 6 children and born in 1844. Found a VERY POOR QUALITY census record for Lindsey area with a Jacob, and many other Fountains, but nothing to tie him to a Joseph. 1900 census shows that Jacob and Louisa came to the USA in 1880 and became citizens in 1882. BUT, - Jacob's certificate of intention is dated 8 May 1897. Most records show Louisa born in French Canada in: 1870 - age 18 b. 1852; 1880 - age 27 b. 1853; 1900 - age 48 b. June 1851; 1910 - age 58 b. 1852/51; 1920 age 64 - b. 1856. Louise died 20 November 1927 in Bay City, Bay, Michigan at age 68 years, 5 months, 2 days which would make her born 18 June 1859. I'm going with the birth date of June 1851 for her and born in French Canada. Maybe Three Rivers, but I've checked as much as I know how to check and found no record of her birth. Her parents names are David Hill and Mary unknown and she had a brother, James b. abt. 1857 and an adopted sister named Matilda Woods born abt 1872 in Michigan. ***Other recently found relatives show James born in New York, USA!!!*** OH YES!!! 1870 census shows a farm laborer in the Jacob and Louisa home by the name of Alexander Woods and HE was born in New York. And on the 1880 census David and Mary Hill and Matilda Woods b. abt 1872 - adopted - live just a few houses away. And James and his wife Angelina live with them. I won't get into Jacob and Louisa's 15 children and only 4 living as of the 1900 census. Or the duplicate names used and sets of twins and deaths of the babies!!! They named 4 babies Mary before they got one who lived. It must have been so heartbreaking for them! I'm guessing they married in Marine City, Michigan but the Jacob I find isn't married to A Louisa. BUT - my memory says that it might have been a Hill. Could she have changed her given name? No parents names on the record. I'm asking for suggestions for where to go next, and what my priorities should be, in order to find Jacob and Louisa in Canada. Your ideas would be GREATLY appreciated.
