They came because of the free/cheap land and he wanted to "be his own man" and I guess the only way he could do that was to get out from under Papa's thumb - fathers were often known to be very harsh in those days. Her son brought her to NY to make application for the pension. Living across the border didn't seem to matter then - the pension was for "service" during the RW, not for living on US soil.     2. Okay, Sher. THAT'S my question. How could a US citizen get free/cheap Canadian land if they fought on the US side of the RW? I'm going to have to do some more reading on this.
