Hello Fiona, According to the book "Wilson's Marriage Notices, the marriage of "Lemon Smith " and Mary Campbell was reported in the Christian Guardian ( the Methodist newspaper) on June 5 1839 "on 25th April, Lemon Smith and Mary Campbell, both of Tiny, (Rev J Scott). On Ancestry , the image of this marriage return in the Home district register is now available. I'll send it to you off list. The marriage took place in Orillia and the minister Jonathan Scott wrote the return when he was in Niagara in 1840 . I think I see the family in Toronto in the 1861 census you referred to . They are also there in 1871 census. Mary is running a boarding house. But Harriet is still with them, age 31, milliner and Ellen is with them? There can't be 2 families with a son named Leman the right age in Toronto at the same time? You can get the image through Automated genealogy. 1871 census Name: Mary Smith Gender: Female Age: 49 Birth Year: abt 1822 Birth Place: Scotland Marital Status: Widowed Religion: W Methodist Origin: Scotland (Scotish) Province: Ontario District: Toronto West District Number: 46 Division: 02 Subdistrict: St Patricks Ward Subdistrict Number: b Household Members: Name Age Mary Smith 49 Harriott Smith 31 Mary Anne Smith 27 Lemen Smith 25 Ellen Smith 23 Margret Smith 21 Mary Smith appears in the Toronto Directories in the Digital Collection at the Toronto Public Library. She is mentioned from about 1866 to 1874. The first couple years say she is the widow of Leman. 1874 says wid L. Lemon appears in the directories starting about 1866 He was a porter with the GWR (Great Western Railway) Then I odn't see either in the census, or any vital statistics on Ancestry. They vanish. It is hard getting outgoing records from Canada. You might get more information on Robert Braik leaving Canada through his military records. Thanks so much for the information that I have received so far. Re the 1871 census, this is where is starts to get a bit spooky...Harriet and Ellen were married on the same day in 1864 (York, Toronto) and by the time of the England 1871 census Harriet was in England with her husband Robert Braik. So, in theory she shouldn't really appear on the 1871 Ontario census..... I've followed Ellen a bit - her married name was Baker and she appears with her husband in later census records in Wisconsin (I think).
