Further thoughts to to what Glen said, a) if the date of birth of December 11, 1849 for the (seemingly) yougest child - Martha (as recorded on her death Registration in 1926) can be validated, then that gives a window of death for Stephen between March 1849 (pissibly month of conception) and December 1850. b) Since Stephen left "minor" children, the should be a Guardianship allpication in the Surrgate / Probate Court records - which application shoul give the exact date of death .... c) If there was any property, you might want to check to wee what type of land transfers exist in the Land Registry Office records ... Cheers! J. Brian Gilchrist.
Yes, I'm OK with the Census dates, I just thought if I could determine when the information for the Directory (not Census) was collected, I might get a more accurate death date estimation. I appears he died between the two 'events' - Directory and Census. Thanks for the responses! Natalie

I'm researching Stephen Sellers b. England, living in Pickering Twp., up until the 1852 Census which shows his wife, Sarah (nee Morley) Sellers as widowed. I was thinking if I could figure out how far in advance names where collected for the Historical Directory, it might give me a better handle on his death date. Hi, You don't mention names - Surnames in Capital Letters on the Subject Line - catch attention - may make your research faster - easier - There may be persons researching the same family or may be able to offer the information from sources they have at hand. Hi, In the more current Directories - early 1900's - the information was taken for the directory the year before it was published. This would keep them as current as possible.
