> Does the 1851 Census, not [tell] us WHEN a family emmigrated to this Country? No, date of immigration is not one of the questions asked, nor is it on the 1861 census. But if the family has a few kids and they came from somewhere else, check the kids' birthplaces. This will at least give you a timespan when the immigration occurred. I also notice, after a lot of transcribing, that if a family usually has a child every two years, there will be a larger gap at the immigration period. /cheers Pat -----Original Message----- From: ontario-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ontario-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Bonnie Cole Sent: 17 July 2007 19:22 To: ONTARIO LIST Subject: [ONTARIO] 1851 Census Hello: Does the 1851 Census, not us WHEN a family emmigrated to this Country? Hi; The place in question is VALORA, which was about 42 miles from Sioux Lookout. See http://www.railvids.com/Valora/valora.htm for more. It was about 125 miles east of Kenora, which was renamed from KEewatin, NOrman and RAt Portage in the early 1900s, not c. 1945. The Manitoba border DOES NOT split Kenora. Contacting the Sioux Lookout library at http://www.slpl.on.ca/ may help. Bill. Listers: I've just spent three days in Lanark Cty doing research and have come up on the 1861 census a child not known of. For the "John Shean" family (should be Shane sometimes transcribed as Shaw) of Ramsey Twp. there is a "W.P. age 12 male". I'm hoping he's died within the time of registrations - he's not on the 1871 census with the family although maybe somewhere else. I ran out of time to check further. If someone could check for me, it would be much appreciated. Thank you. Catherine
Jackie and Bonnie The 1851 census on Ancestry is from the original microfilm of the census pages. It has the actual images, pulled in from the LAC server. There is also an index, which LAC does not have. To find out what questions were asked on the 1851 census see http://allcensusrecords.com/canada/1851census.shtml Scroll down to QUESTIONS ON 1851 PERSONAL CENSUS It does not include a question about immigration. 1842 does and so do others. There is only one. Ancestry has an index to the 1851/1852 census, linked to images of the actual pages. The index includes name, gender, age, birthplace & location. The questions on the full census can be found here http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/1851/001005-130.01-e.html#f . Immigration year is not one of them. Automated Genealogy is at the very early stages of a free index. Hi Bonnie: Although you have Charles Arthur McQuarrie born in 1885, the CEF site states that he was born 23 May 1892. I looked up his birth registration in Ancestry.ca and found the following: Ontario, Canada Births, 1869-1907 - Registration No. 010484 about Charles Arthur McQuarrie Name: Charles Arthur McQuarrie Date of Birth: 23 May 1888 Gender: Male Birth County: Grey (Feversham, Div of Osprey) Father's name: John Laughlan McQuarrie Mother's name: Marian Dand Roll Number: MS929_87 ............ Children of John Laughlan McQuarrie & Marian Dand, (in case you don't have this): William Harvey McQuarrie 18 Jun 1880 Male Grey - John McQuarrie & Marion Dand Sarah Estella McQuarrie 29 Aug 1882 Female Grey - John McQuarrie & Marian Dand John James McQuarrie 30 May 1885 Male Grey - John Laughlan McQuarrie & Marian David Charles Arthur McQuarrie 23 May 1888 Male Grey - John Laughlan McQuarrie & Marian Dand Thomas McQuarrie 26 Mar 1891 Male Grey - John L McQuarrie & Marion Dand .......... Ontario, Canada Marriages, 1857-1922 about Sarah E McQuarrie Name: Sarah E McQuarrie Birth Place: Tp Osprey Age: 16 Father Name: John McQuarrie Mother Name: Marion McQuarrie Estimated birth year: abt 1882 Spouse Name: Richard Redpath Spouse's Age: 27 Spouse Birth Place: Tp Melancthon Spouse Father Name: Thomas Redpath Spouse Mother Name : Annie Redpath Marriage Date: 22 Jun 1898 Marriage Place: Simcoe Marriage County: Simcoe Family History Library Microfilm: MS932_97 Source: Indexed by: Ancestry.com ......... So if Charles Arthur McQ died in 1943 he would have been about 55 years old and likely still working. As he joined the CEF in SK, then that is where he would have been returned to when his tour was finished. There isn't anything but bush and lakes in the neighbourhood of Sioux Lookout, so hard to know what kind of work he was doing. Perhaps he was a cook at a logging camp and perhaps also his CEF paper might help to find what kind of duty he had in WWI. Hello: Does the 1851 Census, not us WHEN a family emmigrated to this Country? Thanks, Bonnie
Bonnie, if you go to http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/cef/001042-100.01-e.html you will find an index for soldiers of the first world war. I located this one which you may already have. Names: MCQUARRIE , CHARLES ARTHUR Regimental number: 1051426 Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 7190 - 27 DOB 23/05/1892 They show the first few pages of his attestation papers. If you check on the site it will tell you how you can order his full set of papers. I suggest this as when I received the copies for one of my relatives, it had his date of death written across it. He too had been buried by the DVA (Department of Veteran Affairs). This was cheaper than ordering a certificate. When he enlisted Nov 15 1916 he lived in Saskatoon Sask as a painter and his next of kin was James McQuarrie, brother in South Saskatoon. I do not know if this helps any. Hi Bonnie Have you tried Newspapers? Newspaper Obits can be a good source. Perhaps some of these Sites listed will give you some help: http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/general/sub.cfm?source=links It is too bad you do not have an exact DOD as that would help you a great deal in locating an Obit or other information. If you knew where he was living at the time he entered the Service perhaps that Township or County kept a record of local Veterans. Good Luck Pat

This was the compulsory registration of all persons, 16 years of age or older, in the period from 1940 to 1946. Hi Bonnie, I think I would direct some attention to Kenora. Originally the name of the town was Rat Portage and the boundary between Manitoba and Ontario runs almost through the town. The distance between Kenora and Sioux Lookout is 145 miles. The distance between Sioux Lookout and Winnipeg is 275 miles. Some sites that may be useful: Ancestor Seekers of Kenora (Genealogy) Ann McMunn > e mail: rlgray@voyageur.ca http://www.kenora.net/manitoba/links.htm http://www.siouxlookout.ca/detail.php?id=12&tb=departments The Canadian Government is/was keeping a record of WWI vets, whether or not they required medical assistance or disability pensions. You might try writing to the Department of Veterans Affairs in Ottawa re your search. However, that business of the 93 years re Privacy may fall into the picture. Good luck with this one Bonnie. Doreen PS - There is currently a Vellore in Ontario, but it is in Vaughan Township of York county - not anywhere near Sioux. ======== >From: Trunthsams@aol.com >Reply-To: ontario@rootsweb.com >To: ontario@rootsweb.com >Subject: [ONTARIO] How to find an obit after 1945 >Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2007 22:54:59 EDT > >I am off on an eastern Ontario quest, but I just saw Ancestors in the Attic >when I was in Canada and it brought to mind one huge brick wall. > >I know that Charles Arthur McQuarrie was alive in 1943 and living in >Vellore, >ON. The "Sioux" is more likely "The Soo" Sault St Marie " a much larger city as opposed to Sioux Lookout. A popular "vacation spot" for workers in the north.
