    1. [ONTARIO] Mourant - Huelin marriage follow up
    2. Brian Gilchrist
    3. Hello Marcia and fellow listers: Greetings from Toronto, Canada: Since I am recovering from yet another bout of sickness ... I thought I would play around with this one. Just to let you know a little more about the marriage you seek. D.O' in her response was maybe not quiet complete. If I had to hazard a guess, and I have been known to be wrong before, and will be wrong in the future - I imagine that she only checked the on-line index to Marriages for the Province of Ontario via Ancestry.ca That on-line Index (currently) ends at 1922. The marriage you need took place after 35 year old Florence Huelin arrived at the Port of St. John, New Brunswick in 1923, noting that Edward Mourant arrived in the Port of Quebec in 1921 at the age of 29. So the marriage you need is not on-line (yet), but the years you need to have searched are available. The records of marriages for the Province of Ontario are available on microfilm at The Archives of Ontario, and through the LDS Family Centres up to and including 1925. So, if you can get SKS to do an RANGOK (Some Kind Soul to do a Random Act of Genealogical Kindness, and yes there is such an organization) to check the index and the actual registration microfilms I bet you in a couple of days you will have the transcript of the marriage you need - having checked 1923, 1924, and 1925. Please remember that they could have also been married in 1927 before returning to the Channel Islands. In which case you will have to wait until those records become available if you do not want to pay the fee for the registration from the Registrar General's office. Have you also consulted the books by the late [Marion? Turk?] on the Channel Islanders to Canada? Finally there are two Mourant siblings that also got married here in Ontario, both of whom are from The Channel Islands. Edith May Mourant, who says she was born in Guernsey marries in a Toronto suburb in 1922, and her brother Thomas George Mourant who says he was born in Georgetown, Jersey - marries in 1921 in London, Ontario. They are children of George Thomas Mourant and Florence Grey (Domall?, Dumall?). It would be a laugh if Edward was another sibling????? Is Florence Huelin your aunt? Keep us posted, and please let me know personally. Cheers! J. Brian Gilchrist A Canadian Genealogist since 1966 ... 41 years and counting! gilchrists@idirect.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marcia Huelin" <marcia_huelin@bigpond.com> To: <ONTARIO@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, August 24, 2007 10:02 PM Subject: [ONTARIO] Toronto Marriage > Could anyone please do a lookup for a marriage in Toronto > 1923 - 1925 > Edward John Gideon Mourant > Florence Melanie Huelin > Both were from Jersey,Channel Islands > 1st child born 13.7.1926 Jersey > 2nd child born 7.9.1928 Jersey > Parents listed as being married Toronto on birth reg.of first child. I also have 2 John Browns I am trying to pin down. :( However, I would like to know whether CHISTIAN and MARY JANE DAVIDS (Davis) are found in the 1861 census. They bought and registered a property in February 1861 on Raglan Street, Waterdown, Wentworth. Thanks to this very active and helpful list................................ 3. Lorine At first I thought it might be the facility that became Thistletown Regional Centre for Children & Adolescents but that was the Queen Mary Hospital for Children and it open 3 June 1913. The Queen Mary Hospital for Tuberculous Children was devoted to the treatment of children with the disease I think what you are looking for is the Victoria Industrial School for Boys opened on May 16, 1887 in the town of Mimico, headed by Superintendent W.J. Hendrie. The school (essentially a juvenile reformatory) emphasized child rescue, reform through character development, moral and academic education, and vocational training. It is now the Mimico Correctional Centre. In 1887 the Government finally approved the Toronto Asylum on Queen Street using part of the "model farm" property at Mimico. The following year 10 patients were sent to live there and practice agriculture. In 1889 they moved into the first "cottage" in what for years has been the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimico_Correctional_Centre Also in 1887 the Government allowed the Victoria Industrial School for bad boys to be located on the "model farm" property to the west of Royal York Road. It had a number of buildings but closed in 1934. In 1918 a branch of the Guelph Reformatory was established on the "model farm". Its facility included a brick and tile factory using shale dug up in an adjacent field. Etobicoke had some gambling dens in the 1930s and 40s and the proprietors when caught were "sent to the brick yards of Mimico" http://www.etobicokehistorical.com/Stories/Sam_Smith/body_sam_smith.html At the AO Victoria <http://ao.minisisinc.com/scripts/mwimain.dll/144/ARCH_DESC_FACT/FACTSDESC/R EFD%2BRG%2B8%2B51%2B6?SESSIONSEARCH> Industrial School - Record of Offenses and Punishments (Sub-Series RG 8-51-6) This microfilm consists of a register of offenses and punishments for the boys at the Victoria Industrial School. 3. Hi Lorine also found this article "Smoking was another problem turn-of-the-century child savers like Kelso and institutional officials like Chester Ferrier, the longest serving superintendent of the Victoria Industrial School, linked to boys' deviant character. A careful study of the boys under his charge led Ferrier to believe that tobacco use was overrepresented among delinquent boys. According to the Superintendent, 60 per cent of the inmates of the Victoria Industrial School were smokers.54 Ferrier objected to the use of tobacco by boys since he was convinced it had detrimental effects for what he called their "moral power." Tobacco use was, in his words, "destroying, and making criminals of more of this class of boys than the saloons. It weakens the moral power of the boy, so that the cigarette fiend readily yields to temptation." 3. Hi Virginia - Alice sent you info on John Davis in Haldimand county from 1851 Census. If that is the right john Davis then you should go to www.familysearch.org to review the 1881 Canada Census. Jane Davis shows there as a 72 year old widow living with son George. Other family members from the list that Alice posted are in the 1881 Census for Haldimand County but with Ontario birth locations which would indicate an earlier arrival for John Davis in Canada.
