Hi Bonnie: On this page, scroll down to Land Records: http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/common/collections.htm#land Click on How to Use the Ontario Land Record Index [ca. 1780-1920] [HTML, PDF] and in that document is this paragraph: Patent -transfers ownership of a parcel of Crown land to a private individual or organization. To see whether an individual or organization acquired ownership of a parcel of land, check the Indexes to Land Patents in Series RG 53-55 (arranged by township, 1793-1852) and RG 53-56 (arranged by surname, 1826-1967). Copies of the patents must be obtained from the Ministry of Natural Resources, Lands and Natural Heritage Branch, Crown Land Registry, 300 Water Street, P.O. Box 7000, Peterborough, ON, K9J You may want to read the entire info page in case there is more info on obtaining same. Also, when you're done, go back to the Land Records heading and click on the other heading: From Grant to Patent: A Guide to Early Land Settlement Records, [ca. 1790 to ca. 1850] [HTML, PDF] I've never done this myself, just found the info on the Archives of Ontario website. Yes I heard that also. My mother, who is 81 yrs, was looking forward to finally being able to know who her birth parents were. Good evening everyone: I have just heard on the CTV National News, and have now confirmed from other sources, that the recent legislation in Ontario which allowed disclosure of information to both birth parents and birth children (which only came into effect this past Monday September 17th) has today Wednesday September 19, 2007 - been struck down by an Ontario Superior Court Judge down as being in violation of privacy legislation under The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Prominent Canadian Civil Rights Lawyer Clayton Ruby argued that privacy is an individual right and no government can decide what information can be released. While this is disappointing at first read, we should be aware and take heart that the way the decision is written could be a god-send to us all in the long run - for if the government is no longer able to "decide what can be released" one can also infer that the entire file must be made available. However, this is speculation on my part and may require new Regulations or even new Legislation to be passed. As this is Ontario legislation and the decision was from an Ontario Superior Court Judge, I am not sure if "Leave to Appeal" can be made to the Ontario Supreme Court, The Federal Court of Appeal or even The Supreme Court. Can any Ontario lawyers who read this and have an interest in the topic shed any light onto the next possible steps for gaining access to these vitally important records for so many people? It must be remembered that Canadian Privacy Laws are (in theory) counter-balanced by the Access to Information laws. As Society moves towards the use of DNA as "proof of being" for so many things, think of all the adopted citizens of this country who should also have a the same "rights" as those not involved in adoption - that being the "right to know". Respectfully submitted for your information. J. Brian Gilchrist, Box 74503, 270 The Kingsway Etobicoke, ON M9A 5E2 gilchrists@idirect.com 1966 - 2007: 41 years of research and educating genealogists
Hello Bill: To answer your question - is another question: what is it that you want? To find info on William Holmes, or to find info on his regiment? There is a William Lynn Holmes listed with the CEF whose next of kin was Mrs. Bessie Holmes of 159 East Avenue N. Hamilton, ON. His birthdate was 29 April 1899 and his occupation at the time of enlistment (May 1917) was a student. Hi List, The following is an excerpt from an email by a friend of mine. She's trying to find her ancestor, George Colburn Herron who was born either in 1844, in Albany NY, or as HE claimed, on 23 August 1836. His father's name was Patrick and he was supposed to be from Ireland. His mother was supposed to have been Pennsylvania Dutch, named Mary Ann, and evidently died when George was about 8-10 years old. When the mother died, George was evidently apprenticed out to a cruel master, and ran away. He ended up in CAYUGA, ONTARIO, CANADA. He there lived with a family named MINO, and one of their daughters was named Dorothy. In the near vicinity lived another family (which I have trace back to Trossingen, Wurttemberg, Germany through their emigration applications) named LINK. JACOB and ANNA LINK had children, including Jacob Jr. and Catherine. Jacob Jr. married Dorothy Mino and they stayed in the Cayuga area until death. Our George Herron played around a little, even traveling through the US looking for better deals, and then went back to Canada and married CATHERINE LINK. They moved to Alpena Michigan, and established Herron, MI, just outside Alpena. My irritating little itch with him is that I can find nothing. I have not yet actually seen HIM in Canada, although all the information supports his being there. I don't know the actual dates of his residence there. I cannot find any smidgen of information about their marriage, and don't even know where it took place. Can anyone help Myra find her ancestor? Or if not, maybe point her in the right direction? Thanks so much, Paula ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

My husbands family settled in Ontario in 1866 after coming from Ireland. The people were the grandfather Thompson, his daughter-in-law and her 3 sons John Thompson b in 1850, son William G Thompson and Samuel Thompson b Oct 31,1857. Samuel crossed over to Mich where he married and had a family. I have been trying to find the grandfather supposedly buried somewhere in Ontario with the possible 1st name of Irvine Thompson. I have not been able to establish this or to find information on the other 2 sons. If anyone has any info on this family I would greatly appreciate anything..thank you, Dorothy Spiegel-- _dorlly36@aol.com_ (mailto:dorlly36@aol.com) ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
