    1. [ONTARIO] New Mailing List - NORTHERN-ONTARIO-CEMETERIES
    2. Murray Pletsch
    3. Dear Folks: Over the past few years, I have received many queries, frantic and otherwise; on the cemeteries located in Northern Ontario. These questions range from...people looking for cemeteries, or tombstones in these cemeteries, cemetery records and generally, assistance in finding their ancestors' burial place. Many folks who queried, have no idea what communities exist in Northern Ontario and therefore when they are directed towards this Region they are unsure of which way to turn. My knowledge of distant points in Northern Ontario is fragmented to say the least, of Nipissing and Parry Sound Districts; and Renfrew County; and extremely limited on other Districts. To help many researchers become familiar with the cemeteries in Northern Ontario......and provide them a Regional, vice Provincial list where they can pose more specific questions; I was successful in requesting Rootsweb to create a NORTHERN-ONTARIO-CEMETERIES mailing list at Rootsweb. Hopefully, many folks knowledgeable about, or living in, Northern Ontario on this list will also subscribe to the Northern Ontario Cemeteries mailing list; thereby being available to provide assistance and information on cemeteries in your part of Northern Ontario to family researchers literally from all over the World. To subscribe, just send a message with the word SUBSCRIBE in the subject line, to: * mailto:NORTHERN-ONTARIO-CEMETERIES-request@rootsweb.com A system message will be returned to you with detailed instructions on how to send messages etc on the list. If you run into problems subscribing please let me know. Bye for now.....Murray * Gravemarker Gallery - http://301url.com/gravemarkers * Nostalgia Gallery --- http://nocggh.org

Since others may be wondering the same things, let me respond as best I can > Then how is anyone to know if their mail is getting on >the list? I've explained how to check to see if your list mail has made it to the list. Simply check the list archives. If your mail is there, it made it. If it's not there, it didn''t. Then you follow the steps I outlined in my last email (the one to which you replied) >Why is Spam allowed as Subject? Subjects of emails are not controlled by the list robot or the list admin. If you are seeing "SPAM" as a subject, it is almost certainly your own mail program spam filter adding that. >Why is different list so different? Rootsweb mail lists are run by volunteer list admins. Rootsweb has it's own set of rules that list admins are asked to follow. However each list admin is able to make their own rules above and beyond those of Rootsweb. The restriction re test messages comes directly from Rootsweb and is one I adhere to. > There are message boards that I have not seen any > messages posted. How do you find out if these message > boards are actrive or still exist? Message boards are not mailing lists. They do not have anything in common, the boards are administered by volunteers but their technical operation is quite different from mailing lists. To find out if a board exists, go to Rootsweb.com and click on Message Boards. >Then do we need two Ontario mailing Lists? One for >genealogy and one for Genealogy and technical help and >Genealogy Software and to see if there is a surname in >Ontario? Each rootsweb mailing list has its own topic. The topic of this list is Genealogy and History of Ontario after 1867. So yes, there are separate lists for Technical help. There will be another for Genealogy software. It makes sense to post queries to the appropriate (i.e., on topic) list. > There is a Delete button if some one doesn't want this >message. That's not how this list (nor most mailing lists) work. You must stay on topic (Genealogy and History of Ontario after 1867) If you choose to not abide by the on topic rule, then you are quite free to seek another list that might suit you better. Mary mentioned Gen-Newbie list. It is an open 'anything goes' list. If that suits your personality better, that is, if you wish to post to an unrestricted list where you are quite unlikely to find anyone else searching for Ontario roots -- then that is what you should do. There you can post about Tasmanian tree frogs, or Russian culture or -- yes -- genealogy software, etc. > I have seen Test messages liven up a board. Sorry Paul but this mailing list expects that posters will refrain from the wasteful and useless Test message syndrome. (that means -- no test messages allowed) I hope this answers your questions, but in future please post your questions to the list admin in private email. The list rules aren't up for discussion so posting the mailing list serves no purpose. I only answered on list because I thought other Ontario-L newcomers might be wondering the same things Lorine List Admin -- Lorine McGinnis Schulze * Olive Tree Genealogy (Ships Passenger Lists) http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ * Naturalization Records http://naturalizationrecords.com/ * Images of Ships Lists http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/ otg@csolve.net or olivetreegenealogy@gmail.com

My LIST ADMIN NOTICES which I send to the list periodically, address this concern. PLEASE do not post ANY technical messages, cries for help or test message to the list. Here's another reminder on what to do if you aren't getting list mail List Admin Tid Bits ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The most common problems that subscribers write about is --- Not getting list mail or not sure if your posts are getting through to the list ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Not getting your list mail? Write to me if you need help and your problem isn't solved any other way. Please make your message brief, but clear, tell me what list you're talking about (I'm an admin for almost 30, and if you dont' tell me which one you're talking about, I can't help you), tell me exactly what the problem is and what you've done to try to solve it. They give information on all household members - name, age, gender, country of birth, religion, ethnic origin, occupation, marital status and education. You can search the 1871 census index to heads of household for Ontario online. If you find a name of interest, you can order a copy of the census page from the National Archives. Requests for copies must include complete references For help and a link to the order form, see http://allcensusrecords.com/canada/1871census.shtml There are 9 returns for the 1871 census but there are 3 that are of the most help genealogically: Schedule 1: Return of the Living Schedule 2: Return of the Dead Schedule 4: Agricultural Return Census records are available on microfilm from the Archives of Ontario, National Archives of Canada, on ILL (InterLibraryLoan) through a local library, or from your local FHC (Family History Center). 3. Hi: If she was born in Alberta, then that's where her birth reg will be, if it was registered. Info here: http://genealogy.about.com/od/vital_records/p/alberta.htm Price to get it ranges from 27.50 - 40.00 Cdn, depending on whether or not you reside in Alberta. Bear in mind that her birth may not have been registered at all. When I went to get my grandmother's 1912 marriage reg, it cost me $27.50 as I live in Alberta, and even though no registration was found, I still had to pay the $27.50!
