    3. It is called tintype or ferrotype. Tin plate - those were for licence plates on vehicles. This site may be of interest to you - http://www.phsc.ca/HOP1900.html But to answer your question, I would say it ceased to be popular when the next new thing came into fashion. Just as today digital cameras are the thing to have but regular cameras do something that digital doesn't.... negatives that last for years and years. I would imagine that some photographers may still use it from time to time in order to teach or to get a special effect. 3. Be cautious. There is a site called World Connect which I was viewing one day, also free.... to a point. I was surprised to find that my grandmother and her twin brother were born in two different locations. Both entries had the same parents entered as well. Then another entry for the twin brother, again with these same parents, but a different wife than the first "twin". In short, persons submitted their findings but had not gone the extra step to verify anything. You may find yourself paying for another persons errors. Cheers! 3. Hello Marion My name is Sharon and I use the GenesReunited. It is one of the best things I use. When I started to use it I thought it would be a waist of time. Then I found several cousins and now have my mothers side of the family way way back somewhere about in the 1200's. My fathers side I now have back to about 1600 and still going finding more and more family I did not know we had. Give it a try and if you dont like it you can cancel if that is what you wish to do. You do not have to sign your life away with it like some of the others. All the best in your searching. Sharon from Nova Scotia Canada

I use Findmypast, you do pay for that but you need only pay about $15 for quite a lot of units, but the best site and it is free, is Freebmd and UKCensus, also free. If I can help you in any way let me know, I am in England and only too pleased to help, Heather French

Passengers arriving in Canada who intended to go on to United States were inspected by US Officials at the Canadian Port of Arrival, then enumerated on US immigration lists. Immigrants were also given inspection cards which they turned in to US Officials once they were on board trains going to United States. Two sets of records were created - passenger lists and compiled inspection cards. These CANADIAN BORDER CROSSING records were microfilmed by INS. They cover 1895-1954 and are indexed. They do NOT include Canadians before 1906. After September 30, 1906 both Canadians and non-Canadians are included on these lists. For more information on the St Albans (Canadian Border Crossing) Lists (including film numbers), see http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/stalbanslist.shtml These lists are now online at Ancestry. Steve Morse has added a one Step Search engine for Ancestry's Canada - US Border Crossing Records 1895- 1956. 3. Hi Jackie (and others) Canada began keeping records of those crossing into the country by land and inland waterways in 1908. Between 1908 and 1918 over 100 border 'ports' of entry (could be lake or river ports or land crossings) were established to inspect and record those entering the country. The microfilmed records are held at Library and Archives Canada. Information collected and type of forms kept varied over the years. Although there are some variations in type and overlaps in the records, the following is a general summary of what's available for what timeframe. Consult the site for more details on how to access and use the records. 1908-1918: no index; entries listed by port and date 1919-1924: Individual forms (called Form 30s) completed for each person; microfimed in quasi alphabetical order, reverse side of form forst 1925-1935: for each month, all ports filed together after 1935: records are closed, you must submit an Access to Information Request You can get a good explanation regarding these records on the Canadian Genealogy Centre's website - Topic: Immigration / Border Entry http://www.collectionscanada.ca/genealogy/022-908.005-e.html Patty McGregor Author, NIGS Course: Canadian Immigration Records http://pasttimes.topcities.com/ > > Would anyone know if there were customs reports taken of immigrants > travelling via train from the US and entering Ontario back in 1907? 3. Good Morning: It is my understanding that citizens of the British Empire did not require any special documents to enter Canada. However your ancestors did require documents to enter the USA and therefore a record may exist in Ellis Island. It would be important to know what the Ellis Island documents classified them as (immigrants v. visitors). Normally the USA did not keep a record of those leaving but as your people were processed throuogh Ellis Island there may be a record for them leaving USA and that would likely be held in Vermont. Immigrant records are held in Vermont. 3. There are two sites on Ontario Highways that I know about - they are linked together. http://www.onthighways.com/ http://www.thekingshighway.ca The history of Highway 11 & the Ferguson Highway are mentioned here: http://www.thekingshighway.ca/Highway11.htm http://www.thekingshighway.ca/PHOTOS/Hwy11photos6.htm Robin -----Original Message----- From: ontario-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ontario-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Scott Shipman Sent: December 1, 2007 9:04 PM To: Ontario-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ONTARIO] Muskoka Road Old Ferguson Highway Old North Road I am looking for history on the Muskoka Road from Bracebridge to Almaguin. I believe that from Bracebridge to Huntsville it was called the Old Ferguson Road...part of which lies just south of Huntsville today going through Allensville. The highway before the overpass was complete over the Vernon Lake Narrows in 1959, went through the Town of Huntsville. And for some reason I believe that it turned into the Old North Road and crossed the Big East River heading to Melissa. The highway alignment pretty well destroyed Melissa and Emsdale. Was this highway also called the Old Ferguson Highway. If anyone can help me with the history of this road section it would be very appreciated.
