Thank you all for your prompt answers. Mike More solved this puzzle with the following "That is the date when he took the information. If you scroll to the next pages, you will see 11th April; going backward 8th April. He had completed the first 8 lines on your page on the 8th, took the 9th off and was tracking the date when he picked up again. Might be his signature afterwards: A Johnston, Enum. Some enumerators did this. Then you know the actual date of enumeration. Unfortunately, you don't know if the information is as of that date or if he followed the instructions and recorded the information as of 2 April 1871 :-)" Marjorie ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 26, 2010 4:27 PM Subject: [ONTARIO] Need help -- Ancestry, 1871 Census, Column 23 > On the following page, which I found in 1871 census of Ontario, under name > of William DEGEER, married to Sarah RODMAN. The entry reads: 10th April A Johnson Enum'r Which translates as the Census Taker / Enumerator named "A. Johnson" visited either that deGeer and the entries above, or that DeGeer house and the entries following below on April 10 of 1871. Your have to check the see the placement of the previous date above and the next date following to find out if it is the families / house above or below that were ennumerated on that day. Marjorie, I had that on one of mine too and had to think. First I don't think back then they called surgery operations as we do or would record it. I think it was the day the enumerator did something as that is who signed it. Any other answers gratefully accepted though. Hello List, About two years or so ago, there was a lady who would send you an obit, if you found the person on her site. Is there any chance that she is still doing this and could anyone tell me the web site. Thankyou in advance for the help. Sharon ps this lady sent me my moms obit from the paper and I am in need of her help once again.
Hello List, I would like to know if there is anyone who could check on an obit for the above mentioned person. He passed away June 20-21, 2008 in Toronto. Not sure if it would have been Weston, or Etobiko. Any help would be much appreciated. If anyone finds it could you send me a copy as that is where a lot of info is to help in finding his family. Sharon
I have tried Pages of the Past, Toronto Star, on-line, they are not up to 2008 yet. It would likely be available on film at a Toronto library. Or, try a look up from the Toronto Public library website, "ask a librarian". Hi Mary Finally, after all the help you've been to me over the years, I can finally help you for a change! I own this book, and found the following on page 84: "Nine ministers served in the Whitby Methodist Church between 1856 and 1876, when it was replaced by the Methodist Tabernacle, now St. Mark's United Church. One of these ministers was Rev. John Hunt (1818-1901), whose son, Vincent Perry Hunt (1859-1952) was one of the founders of the Toronto Conservatory of Music and was music director at Albert College in Belleville and at the University of Alberta. Vincent P. Hunt was born in Whitby while his father was serving as minister. From...Chronicles of a Coounty Town: Whitby Past and Present by Brian Winter.
