    2. S & P Darcey
    3. People researching in the Census of Ontario (Canada West) taken in 1852 have always been frustrated since parts are missing , including the sections for the town of London, and the Township of London in Middlesex County, Ontario. The London & Middlesex County branch, Ontario Genealogical Society through the efforts of Gerry Tordiff, Dennis Mulligan, and many others, has addressed this difficulty by compiling lists of people resident in the town and/or township between 1850 and 1854. Now researchers have another resource to consult when establishing a person's residence in British North America. 40 contemporary sources, some unpublished, ranging from assessment rolls, church records, newspaper notices, to membership certificates, have been mined for the names of children, women (sometimes maiden names and married names), and men. Similar names appearing in different sources are included. As a result, the town of London volume contains 11,626 names, and the volume for London Township contains 5626 names. 1. [ONTARIO] OGS London substituion for missing 1852 census
    2. Victor W. Sifton
    3. The 1852 census substitute for London Town and London Township is not a typical census. The 1851/2 census of Middlesex County is complete EXCEPT for London Township and London town which had just separated from London township in 1850. The only part of London township census which survived was St. Patrick's ward. To replace the missing parts of the census, 2 volunteers searched through journals, directories, newspapers, reports, assessment notices and many other written items from 1850 - 1854. When a name was found it was indexed in the town or township as appropriate. So the information in the census replacement is a list of names and a resource reference. So the list indicates that the person was involved in some way in the town or township at that time. Some names occur in both lists. To find out how the person was involved you would have to refer to the resource item. The lists are available as 2 booklets or as one CD. For further details see our website at: http://www.ogs.on.ca/londonmiddlesex/ Victor W. Sifton Publications, London-Middlesex branch OGS [email protected]

    1. Re: [ONTARIO] Sharing Memories: A Genealogy Journey
    2. Betty
    3. Hi Lorine, That's a great idea. I can add a few comments. I read of one suggestion when trying to write your memoirs. Take all your old photos of yourself and arrange them by each year of your life. Start at the beginning, and each time you look at that photo - you might remember something that happened that year. It could be something about yourself or something that happened around that time. When I am ready to do that, I will need to do that. I am one of those people who have very few memories of my childhood. Almost nothing before Age 6. And, my sisters can remind me of events during our school years; once my memory is jogged I can remember some things. I am always amazed when I meet someone who has a "great" memory. I once met a lady around Age 95 who could remember what she had for breakfast one morning in 1945. And just last week I saw an old friend I haven't seen for 20 years; we had traveled together in the 1980's for a weekend ski-trip. I only have a vague memory of that weekend, but he could remember that night when he told a joke and I laughed my head off. :o) I could also say that I tell a lot of stories on the Lists. And, I've been doing that since 2000. And those "memories" will always be in the archives of the many Lists I subscribe to. So, I might not remember an event one day, but I might have remembered it 2 yrs. ago. Some people have suggested that I start a Blog. But, I spend so much time participating on the Lists that I don't think I want to sit at my computer "more" time. The same with "writing a book." I have enough information to write a family-history book - a chapter for each set of great-grandparents. But, I just can't "sit" at my computer that long. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) P.S. I lived with one great-grandmother from Age 2 to 9. She had inherited that farm in the 1930's. What did she leave me in her will? Psoriasis. :o( ----- Original Message ----- From: "Olive Tree Genealogy" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Cc: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]>; <[email protected]>; <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, March 01, 2010 10:29 AM Subject: [ONTARIO] Sharing Memories: A Genealogy Journey > Hello everyone, > > Have you ever found a diary, letter or journal written by > an ancestor? 1. [ONTARIO] Sharing Memories: A Genealogy Journey
    2. Olive Tree Genealogy
    3. Hello everyone, Have you ever found a diary, letter or journal written by an ancestor? Do you remember how excited you were to have that glimpse into great grandma's life and character? Or maybe you wish you could find something one of your ancestors wrote! I know I have felt that longing and excitement - excitement when I found 3 letters written by my great great grandfather to his mother in the 1840s. How often though do we genealogists stop and think about ourselves - and how excited a descendant would be 50 or 100 or 150 or more years from now - to find something that *we* wrote. It's important for us to write our own memoirs, to put our memories and stories down on paper for our descendants. I overcame my hesitation and my thinking that my memories would be boring and I began my Life Story last year. I started with my first memory and tried to keep my journal chronological. It was a matter of writing down my memories of each year of my life - or so I thought! That soon proved to be very difficult. I got confused - had I written about my mother falling on the ice her first time skating? Or my father dressing up as Santa then giving out the wrong presents? I simply could not recall what I had already written and what was a memory that had just surfaced. I decided to write by topic and that seemed to go much better! So 14 weeks ago I started a 52 week series called "Sharing Memories: A Genealogy Journey" at http://tiny.cc/mxw6z Each week (usually on Sundays) we have a topic to encourage us to write our stories. The stories can be private or they can be shared - either as a comment added to the blog or on your own blog or website. Topics we've written about so far include Memories of Grandmothers, Christmas Memories, Winter Meals, Birthday Parties, School Memories - First Day and Year of School. We've had some great feedback and contributions to this series and I wanted to be sure that more genealogists know about it! Every time I write something, another memory surfaces. Now there is even someone from my old hometown of Ajax who has joined us and her memories are helping me to recall more details. I didn't know her growing up as she was about 5 years older than me, but living in the same small town (yes it used to be very small - a village actually!) we experienced many of the same things. So, please drop by, read a few of the posts and contribute your own memories (again - you do not have to share them in public!) Get out a journal and start writing, your great great grandchild may thank you one day :-) Start at http://tiny.cc/mxw6z and go to the BOTTOM of the page as the posts are in order of most recent down to oldest. I hope you'll decide to join in. If you prefer, you can also join in on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=262536387326 It's a lot of fun and I find it really helps encourage us all to write when there are others joining in. Please go to the Website at: http://www.gravemarkers.ca and click on the "Join Updates Newsletter" button located just above the weather row. * * HELPFUL HINTS: ************* 1. Cemeteries online have spousal duplicated photographs. This means a photo of a stone which also has the spouse's maiden name showing, is duplicated and when one searches using the onboard search engine, for a surname, the spouse's surname will be reported as a separate "search result". * 2. If your "search engine" keyword is the same as a city, town, village, township then please read the valuable tips below: * A. *CONCERN:* If your "search engine" keyword you are using is say: pembrok* then your search will pick up all the pembroke surnames....*BUT* ...it will also pick up all the website pages where pembroke is used as a meta name. * B. *SOLUTION:* Change your keyword to pembrok1 and the search engine will only pick up the gravemarkers with the pembroke surname. * 3. If you don't see a Community and its' cemeteries online...it means a volunteer has not photographed and sent me the cemetery photographs. Can you or some of your family and friends help out by photographing the missing cemeteries....? * * All the best in 2010...Murray Pletsch * Cdn Gravemarker Gallery - http://www.gravemarkers.ca * Ontario Historic Gallery - http://www.rootsweb.com/~cannor *
